The most important thing Allen says in his book is what has me ready. Smoking does nothing for you! Absolutley nothing! It does not make you less stressed it does not make a meal better. It does nothing for you! And that is the way I will look at my quiiting journey, I am not giving anything up but rather gaining everything!
that's the spirit, spirit!
i like that very much!

That's one of the things I keep running through my head too spirit! How much I'll be gaining from quitting. I'm so aware of every cig I smoke now and each time I realize that it's not doing anything for me except taking so many things away from me.

I don't post all that much, and actually haven't been around for at least a week (though doing well on Atkins, have just been busy with other things). It is really ironic to read this thread today. Yesterday (Friday 6/10) I started trying to quit. I had set a goal that I wanted to be a non-smoker by the time I was 35, and I have less than 2 months to go before that birthday comes around. I've been smoking since I was 16.
I certainly haven't been perfect these past 2 days. I smoked my "last" cigarette at 6 am Friday morning. I work nights, so this was right before I went to bed. After I woke up, I ran to the store and bought a single (they sell them at 2 stores by my house)! On the way to work I bought 2 more. Once I was at work, I found a pack that had about 6 in my car. Nevermind that they are Costa Rican cigarettes I bought when I was on vacation there THREE MONTHS AGO! I smoked them all by Saturday afternoon around 3:00 pm. I bought another 2 singles before I left for work again tonight. It has now been about 6 hours since my last one. I have another 3 hours here at work. All I can think about is getting off, and buying another single! It is insanity! I know that I really have to quit buying these stupid singles. But I justify my actions by telling myself that I have smoked less than half the number of cigarettes that I normally smoke (over a pack a day) so that is a step.
And! I am wearing a patch. :yikes (wasn't going to mention that, but hey, if I am going to do this, guess I should just lay it all out there!) Oh, and I am taking Wellbuterin. My name is Jerilyn and I'm nicotine/cigarette addict. Oh, forgot to mention the butt smoking I did on Friday. Purposely left cigs in ashtrays for emergency butts. Those are gone now too.
Anyway, I would really like to join you guys who are brave enough to do this. Non-smokers I don't think can KNOW what quitting this habit is like. Only when I am trying to quit smoking, do I realize what addiction means, what it is.
I'm not going to promise not to buy that single this morning. But I won't buy a pack, and by Monday morning, I am going to commit to not doing anymore singles, or anymore butts, or any bummed cigarettes. NO MORE!
Hope everyone is having the best nicotine free day possible.....
earthgodes, i know the others that are heading into this will welcome you and anybody else who wants to beat this addiction!
your fearless leadeer hostess is out of town but will return on tuesday i think. i sure she will sending pm's and trying to encourage all you guys everyday!
i hope everyone is coming along so far so good!

Good luck to all of you! I decided to quit on 5/18. And, I haven't picked one up since. I found that chewing gum helps me out a lot. I also noticed that I have been putting more food in my mouth at night (that is when I smoked the most), so I stocked my kitchen with atkins friendly foods. Once again, good luck and congrats for how far you have already come.

Ok, I'm going to give this a shot. When my pack is gone, I am done. I have about a half a pack left, so we're looking at tomorrow night or Wednesday.
Does anybody else feel like its a habit and not an addiction? I honestly don't feel addicted, but I probably am. Its mostly a habit to smoke in the car and take breaks at work. I don't smoke at home. I can be home for long periods of time and never think of smoking. But as soon as I get in the car, I just can't go anywhere without lighting up.

Nikki you are addicted. Try not to kid yourself this is a legal drug addiction. I highly recommend The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. I read it in about 6 hours so it is something you can pick up today and have read by the time you smoke your last cigarrette. He tells you to smoke until you have read the entire book.

We are all addicted. Yes, it is a habit. I am proud of everyone this weekend. I want to tell you I have been smoke-free for 1 month and 10 days. I was having some major stress Friday and Saturday, but I maintained. I knew if I picked up just one. I would have smoked 2 packs. Quitting smoking was much worse for me than giving up Dr. Pepper. I was very much addicted to Dr. P's. So, Hang in there. It will get better. Come here and rant and rave. Someone will listen.
