I started out with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) in 1997 and had to take pills to get that undercontrol first, then ended up having to have a subtotal thyroidectomy in 1998 which of course made me hypothyroid immediately .. so I've been to both ends of the spectrum on this one!

I was hypothyroid when I started Atkins, but was taking meds .1 mg Synthroid at the time and had NO TROUBLE losing the weight.

Since getting to goal, I've had to have my doses adjusted a few times, but now things seem to be stabilized....thankfully.

I was 46 when I got mine diagnoised. I'd has a TSH 3 yrs before and it was normal but this one came back abnormal and then the follow up showed I had the antibodies and Hasimoto's hypothyroid was the diagnoises.

Im hypo, because of in high school I had cancer and the radiation damaged my thyroid gland. I take synthroid every day and have to get my TH level checked all the time because they have a hard time keeping it right with me.

I got diagnosed last month and have been on Synthroid for 3 weeks now. Haven't really noticed any change in the way I feel. And I have been in the longest stall ever.. However, I think I have been a litle sloppy with my carb counting..not in ketosis anymore, so I am back to induction as of today..

My doctor asked me just 7 weeks ago how my Synthroid he prescribed for me in 2003 was working for me (he tested me for thyroid problems back then but NEVER mentioned it after the blood test!!!) :sadblinky

Sooooo he put me on Synthroid 7 weeks ago, and I'm to go back to him again on the 8th of this month see how it's working for me.

I have been experiencing the symptoms of a hypothyroid but my doctor can't seem to find anything wrong, my mom, grandmother, sister and aunt all have it and are on medication....my doctor prescribed me a low dose of synthroid, but i can't understand if she didn't think i have any thyroid problems why prescribe the medication?

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 97' . I am now on a t3/t4 combo. I was sucsseful with atkins a couple of years ago...but I let things go too long. I have been back in induction since May 1st of this year. I am taking my thyroid condition much more seriously this time.

I too had Graves and was treated by having my not so little thyroid gland irradiated. :sadblinky
I had been misdiagnosed as bipolar because of the symptoms (and my inability to deal with them) and so went through the thyroid thing and a couple of quacks trying assorted psychotropic drugs out on me. The upshot was that I ended up depressed for several months, began packing on the pounds and a year later ended up almost 100lbs heavier than I had ever been in my life. I was always a big child/teen/woman but I just couldn't do my job at that weight and was always in pain from one thing or another. So I tried low-carb and lost just over 50lbs. I feel so much better now.! I still want to lose more and that's why I've come in search of you folks - I haven't lost much this year on my 'easy' low-carb diet and have decided to start doing it by the DANDR book. Already down 3lbs in the past week so - yay!

welcome to all of you new folk.

sexymomof3 sorry nobody got back to you sooner. i've been dealing with the death of my father and finding a solution for my mother's living arragiemnts that keeps her safe and happy.

You can have symptoms of conditoins and not have the blood test results to indicate you have the condition so your doctor treats you with a low dose of the medication for the condition and if you respond or your blood work changes then you did have it or were what is called subclinical. The endocrine society changed the thresh hold level from 5 to 3.0 for TSH in 2002 but many labs have not altered there test results indicators so they will still say normal rand 3-5. Therer are some complicated reason why a simple blood test will not show your levels to be off too like estrogren protein interactions ion the blood stream binding the T$ to those proteins making your blood level look normal when your cellular level can be very low.

if you have improved symptomns after 6 weeks of meds then you need the meds.

nillygiel cases like yours were so common that they now teach and require thyroid hormone level assessment for all folk complaning of depression. Glad you got sorted out and are on the right medication path now.

                      Shannasfour welcome to ADBB.

Happy low carbing to all of you.

                        Re: Hypothyroid ADBBers roll call

I too have hypothyroidism secondary to treatment for Graves Disease. That radioactive Iodine does it most of the time. Over the years I've had to have my thyroid medication adjusted whenever my other hormone levels have changed. Just recently I stopped taking my estrogen and my thyroid level dropped and had to increase my thyroid. Now that I have, my hair has stopped falling out so much. I don't know if it's that or the fact that I'm taking all the supplements now. Who knows. Anyway, I think one of the reasons my weight loss is not as great as I would like is because of the thyroid issue.

                          Re: Hypothyroid ADBBers roll call

keep getting your thyroid levels checked and regulated because a natural response to weight loss is a lowering of thyroid hormone production.. Also many of the acceptable foods are goitrogens and the OWL rung 3 nuts and seeds is too.

It is unusual that your thyroid klevel would decrease when you stopped your estrogen unless your doc was not testing for free T4 because the estrogen causes protein changes in the blood stream and the T4 binds to them making less T4 availible for your cells and skewing your results to look like you have a higher level then you actually do since much of it stays in the blood stream and is in your test sample instead of in your cells where it is really needed.
                          Happy low carbing.

I also had Graves Disease in 1997 and it took forever for the doctor to diagnose it. I had all the symptoms; hair loss, sweats, weight loss, tremors, intolerance to heat, etc. Finally had a subtotal thyroidectomy in 1998 which put me into hypothyroidism .. now I take Levothroid 1.50 mcg a day and all is well.
