Re: Any 50 year old members out there?? Come on in and say hi

Today is another day -- the sun is out and everyone is back at work. It looke like it could rain later but for now it's very nice.

I need to go to the grocery store for a few things this afternoon - I laid back down for a few minutes this morning after dh went back to work, I was just exhausted after the weekend. I didn't get much sleep with everyone in the house not feeling well and everything going on outside.

We are having chicken for dinner....I thawed out an extra chicken breast so I can cook it and have it for lunch or snacking on. I finshed my faux-tato salad today at lunch - it was wonderful..had that an ounce of grilled colored peppers and the Nathan's Hot Dog from the other night...yummy!! I think I'm just going to grill a few peppers each time we start the grill - they taste so good and sweet when they are cooked out there.

Time for a shower and off to the store!! Have a fun Atkins eating day!!

Re: Any 50 year old members out there?? Come on in and say hi

Well to all of you, I'm 58 and an Atkins second time (at least) doer. Anyway, I'm dedicated this time to losing weight. So far over the last several months I've lost 30 lbs and have another sixty to go. What is driving me this time is health, not just looks. I don't want to take Statins and my doctor has said if I do Atkins he'll check me out in a couple of months and if all is healthy with Cholesterol and all we won't do the Statin drugs. I know my BP is down to a really good number and that is happy news. Atkins is and will be for me a way of life. The longer I do it, the more it is simply my lifestyle! I can now be around others who eat other stuff and it doesn't bother me most of the time. That in itstelf is a miracle. Anyway, I'm wearing shorts that I've not been able to get into for a year and have lost inches where I need to. I guess may body responds well to Atkins and so be it! I"ll be staying with this mode of eating for the long haul. MMM

Hi and welcome to another over 50 person!!! We're glad to have you -- the more the merrier....that's why I started this thread originally, so we could talk to each other and share our experiences.

Unfortunately, we don't loose are quickly or easily as those 20 or 30 years younger so it's nice to have a place to go, kick up our heels and share what we are going through!

I know what you mean about not doing this for looks...I'm far past that stage of my life -- I don't have to look "sexy" for anyone....my husband is a heart patient so "those" days are long behind us.....I want to be healthy for me because I take care of him and my mother. I am the only driver in our household so I need to be healthy to make sure we all get to doctors office or where ever else we need to go.

Congrats on your 30 pound loss...6 bags of sugar gone off your body!! Good for you. We have about the same amount of weight left to loose...glad to see someone else is at about the same place I am.

Have a great Atkins food day!!

Re: Any 50 year old members out there?? Come on in and say hi

Thank you Carole for writing. My body epiphany came this summer when I first went swimming--it took a lot of courage! Anyway, all of us women in the same age group had various droops, spider veins, etc. My reaction rather than being shy about the whole thing was was SO WHAT! We sort of "earned" these marks from living full lives! I'm glad also to find someone who is about where I am and also it is great to have a group here of around the same age where we can support each other. Last, it is all about health in the long run anyway. I got out of an abusive marriage and now can focus on my physical and mental health and also be more available to my only daughter who is physically and mentally handicapped.

Anyway, I do love doing Atkins and find there is so much to discover via the recipes here and those I come up with on my own. Thank you again for your welcome. Mary

Re: Any 50 year old members out there?? Come on in and say hi

The sun is out and it's a gorgeous day today -- finally!!! I have had 7 of my grape tomatoes from the garden and they are delicious! It's just amazing the difference in taste between the greenhouse tomatoes we get all winter or even the "Santa" grapes that taste so much better than the greenhouse ones as compared to ones out of the garden. I just can't wait for the large tomatoes to get ripe - they are very white looking and should start turning pink and then red in the next couple weeks. I'm really hoping to be deluged in tomatoes in the next few weeks! Our white onions are somewhere between a golf ball and a baseball in size now -- since I couldn't find another pack of onion sets we decided not to use the ones we'd already planted as green onions - when they came up we knocked the greens over and are letting them grow as large as we can get them. The green beans have a lot of flowers on them so we should have beans soon also hopefully. The cucumbers, zucchini and turnips died in the heat a couple weeks ago - inbetween all the rain we were having and the 100 + temperatures it was just too much for them.

Ok, how about a new question: What is the best meal you've had lately?

Last night we had smoked turkey breast and it was delicious (no sugar - hickory smoked only - we had a friend smoke it for us). We ate less than half of it ad have plenty left over for lunches. I'm going to make a turkey wrap for lunch (the wrap is lettuce).

Ok, that's what I have to say...how about you??

Re: Any 50 year old members out there?? Come on in and say hi

Well, one of the best meals I've had was a nice pork roast, green and wax beans with a little oil and vinegar, some sliced tomatoes and jicama slices as a sort of 'desert." It was a alrge roast and so I've got plenty left to have. I really enjoy cold roasts. It is well over 100 degrees here in southern Texas and not conducive to doing a lot of outdoor activities. The grape tomatoes really sound yummy. I'l like to start some in the fall. As it is I've got one Meyer lemon still ripening on its tree and several pomegranates growing on a tree in the back aprt of the yard. Am at a weight standstill--184 and will wait for the scale to change downward. THis Atkins is a great program for me and I'm glad to find this group of those of us in the same age range. Mary

Hi Everyone- Sorry I have been gone- working 10 hour days and I am beat! Doing fine on my plan- Still having issues getting ALL of my water in-just not enough time and I really can't drink it at work except on breaks-then run to the restroom! LOL!

The weather here is TOO nice- like spring or fall, no summer at all. Odd.

Hi, I've been away from here for awhile too. It's all I can do most days to check my email and I don't get time to check in here. I'm keeping up with the challenges though and just posted my stats for the 6WEC which ends today.

We are getting ready to open our blueberry field to the public and there's so much to do. I've cleaned everything except the fridgerators, bathroom and the buckets at the sales shed. I still have to lug the scales, calculators, cleaning and paper supplies plus the books and cards over, then stock the fridges and plug them in.

This morning we hoisted the 300 lb. metal mascot to the top of the water tank that our sil made for us. He likes to do things like that although it wasn't exactly what we wanted. LOL It's a dinosaur; don't ask my why because I'm still scratching my head but when these guys get together, you never know what they will dream up!

Carole, the best meal I've had lately was T-bone steaks cooked on the grill and I had salad with mine. It was tender and delicious. Tomorrow my sil is making shrimp but I can't have any because I'm allergic to it.

Sorry you're allergic is shrimp -- I'll eat your share, it's about the only type of fish other than canned tuna that I eat.

I just got home a little while ago, was in a slight car accident yesterday late afternoon and got an "all expenses paid vacation overnight in the hospital"....I have a slight concussion (and because of Natashia Richardson they are being extra cautious with head injuries now) - I have a few stitches in the side of my head and more of a headache than anything but I'll be fine.

I'll have to get back on track tonight and try to get some of this overnight weight I gained back off, so once again I start....I have 1 thread called "creeping up the rungs" because that's really what I'm doing - the weight is creaping off of me.

Ok, hope everyone has a good weekend. I'm going to go lay down for awhile and rest.

Hi all I haven't visited this part of the forum lately due to only having time for fleeting visits to do my 'mod stuff' and update the 6WEC charts, but have a bit more time today to pay a few calls!

Welcome to all new members since my last visit here
It is heartening for all of us to realise that even after the 50th birthday it is possible to lose weight with Atkins and improve our general health while not having to deprive our body of delicious food

I think the 'best' part of following Atkins for me is that with a little ingenuity and thinking outside the 'box' we can work out a way of sticking to plan even when eating out.

One benefit of not being a young person is that I do not worry about what my fellow diners will think about my food choices, so I am free to say - no potatoes but can I have an extra serving of green vegetables and a few pats of butter (no margarine for me ) with that roasted chicken half!!

Or when my fellow redhatters are ordering a danish pastry or giant triple chocolate gateau slice to drink with their coffee I ask for a pot of herbal tea and a chunk of cheese with some butter to eat with my 'diet crackers'.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Carole, I am so sorry to hear of your accident- rest ALOT- you will be fine!

I am STILL trying to get out of the 190's- I thought today would be the day, but no- my scale has a few new names this morning.......
                        Tomorrow!!!

I actually have a day off work today and I have to clean my gutters- when the monsoon like rains came yesterday, I had a waterfall around my house! It is the frond things from my chestnut trees clogging up the works...so I will be on the roofs digging them out-

Elizellen, I'm glad you got enough free time to visit us. You're doing a great job in the 6WEC! Any news on when Jimmie is coming back?

I'm so happy to see Elizellen stopped to say hi!! I agree completely about our age not worring as much as much what people think of our food choices. I have never been one to mince words so if someone says something to me I can usually put them in line. My favorite thing to say is "it's my health - you don't need to worry yourself about it."

Hope everyone is ready for the week ahead of us. Another day, another chance to make a difference!

Good Monday morning! Well, all the work and little water(and maybe a few too many cans of pop) on Sunday did not do me well- I feel like a slug and up 2#- all fluids since I ate right on plan. And my back is killling me!

Back to work today and back in "normal" mode.

I thought I would pop in and say Hi. I too am a 50+ so I fit right in here.

While I have health issues of my own I am staying pretty much on track with this WOE. I have regained some weight but it too is slowly coming off again. I think a lot of that is water/fluid because of the swelling I have in my lower right leg. We still don't know the cause, so that is puzzling. But I am not going to let that deter me from my goal. It just means it will take a little longer to get there.

In the past year I have lost over 50 #'s and feel really good about what I have done. As for eating out, I eat what I want as long as it is within the plan and tell others to eat what they want. This is my food and no-one is asking them to eat it. My DH has reverted back to old habits and I can't nag him all the time. My health issues have led to his stress eating. When he figures it out then he will decide to do something about it.

In the mean time I will stay on track and trust God for healing.
