Re: 10 More Pounds To Go and Moving On Down

First of all CONGRATULATIONS! So close to goal. I read you post quite often and am always so impressed with your progress. There is an article in the February Prevention Magazine regarding MUFAS (monounsaturated fats). It explains how incorporating these foods in each meal that they will help your LDL levels come down and help your HDL come up. Also eating more of these will target belly fat. It's a must read. What is also wonderful about MUFAS is that they're Atkins Friendly. Again Don, Congratulations, You are Awesome!
    Sincerely, Sherri

Re: 10 More Pounds To Go and Moving On Down

I'm not a doctor, either, but with your HDL at 85 your total is going to be a little over the "recommended" under 200. That is actually awesome numbers! I think you should keep doing what you are doing and you will be fine--better than fine. Doctors just have it in their head that a certain number has to apply to everyone.

I just had the same conversation with an endocrinologist who wanted me to go on cholesterol lowering drugs because my total went up from 177 to 182. My LDL came down and my HDL went way up, but she still maintained that I needed to do something about my numbers going up. I got her to recognize that it was my good cholesterol going up and my bad was coming down, but she still thought the upward trend was a bad thing. I just mumbled something and left her office a happy woman.

          Sunny!

People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: 10 More Pounds To Go and Moving On Down

            Hi, Don

How attached to your doctor, are you? I know that once a person finds a doctor that they can really connect with, they wouldn't want to change, and I understand that. However, if don't have a special relationship with him that you'd like to keep, I'd find one that understands Atkins. My doctor is 100% pro-Atkins, and I can't tell you how much easier that makes my life.

Have you read the Gary Taubes book Good Calories, Bad Calories? It is quite an eye-opener on the subject of cholesterol and fat. And after I finish this book, I am going to read The Great Cholesterol Con by Anthony Colpo. According to these books, cholesterol that is not super-high (and your number isn't super-high) is not the death warrant that most of the medical profession believes it is. Also, Sunny is right on the mark... an increase in HDL will raise your total number, but it's OK. You want your HDL to be high!

Grrr... the Taubes book has really got me stirred up. This lowfat dogma is such bullsh*t, and I have gotten to where I can lose my temper easily when someone starts spouting that crap to me. Really, Don, if you have the chance, you need to read this book. And like I said, if you're not attached to your doctor, I would change. Of course, I don't exactly know how you would find one that is Atkins-friendly. I was lucky, in that my doctor is the one who turned me on to Atkins, rather than the other way around.

I wish you well with this. There is NO way in h*ll that I would give up Atkins just to lower my cholesterol a little. And chances are, even if you did start eating differently, my guess is that your numbers would not change significantly. My doc says that cholesterol is much more determined by heredity than by diet. And the things I am reading now, say not to put so much emphasis on cholesterol. Let us know what you think about this.

Re: 10 More Pounds To Go and Moving On Down

Mitzi, Gary Taubes book was on my Christmas list. It must have fallen out of Santa's sack, because it didn't show up. I guess I am going to have to break down and buy it myself. It does kind of P!$$ you off when they continue to push stuff that doesn't work. This is the same doctor that the week before asked if I had gastric bypass surgery and when I told her what I was doing. She said, keep after it, because whatever you are doing is definately working. Then the following week, it is change your diet! Ha! I don't think so!!!

OK, now I am off my soapbox. Back to what is going on. I am going to post tomorrow when it is time to weigh in, but I will say that this is going to be an awesome week. I snuck a peek today at the scale and I am really excited. This week has really kicked things into gear.

My goal this week was to keep my calories closer to 1800, my fat grams around 100 and 50% of my calories, my protein grams about 135 and 30% of my calories and my carbs at 70 net, and no more than 20% of my calories.

Here is what I have to report.
Calories averaged 1879 per day, fat grams averaged 108 for 52%, protein grams averaged 138 for 29%, and net carb grams averaged 69 for 19%.

Don, you are amazing! I am just wow'ed by how well you are able to coordinate your food to produce such consistent stats. You're an Atkins machine. I am just thrilled that your adjustments are producing such good results. I knew that they would! Can't wait to hear your weigh-in news tomorrow.

I had a great weigh-in this morning... 120! I have been inching down since the first of the year, but didn't want to change my siggie until I reached the 120 mark. I changed it this morning.

Hey, have you decided what to do about your doc, and whether to continue to eat the way that you do now?

Oh Man Don, do I know what you mean when your doctor changed horses in the middle of the stream per say. "Keep after it, because whatever you are doing is definately working". I heard my doctor say those same words when I was seeing him and lost 155 pounds.
I had gained 30 pounds when I had seen him in August of last year and he asked me "what was going on with me" I told him I'm doing everything I've always done, He said, And that is?" I said, "ATKINS" What he said back to me blew my mind, he said " well you can eat anything on Atkins." As you can imagine, I was in AWWW! As I was walking out the door I told him he needed to get his memory checked. His office called me with the results of my thyroid test the next day to inform me that they had sent in a new prescription for my synthroid because my thyroid levels were down. That explained the 30 pounds. The moral of the story is it seems that Doctors have a tendancy to assume that we are the ones to know whats going on with us or at least that we are in control of it. We're hiring them to do a job. They're just not on they're job when you get comments like that! I believe he was frustrated with my weight gain and just lashed out on Atkins. I think he'll be singing another toon when I see him next.
I'll be throwing the thyroid issue in his face when I see him this week. I was so offended by his comment that day about Atkins ,that it's taken this long to see him again. I'm looking for an apology!

Wishing you the best of health and lite Don!
                    Sincerely, Sherri

Sheri, they are just locked into that LOW FAT mindset, and can't get over it, because then they would have to admit that all these years they have been touting something that is actually harmful to peoples health! Some take the time to learn the TRUTH, but most just stick their heads in the sand, because it rocks their world!

Well, I am happy to report... Drum roll please...

What I did last week really worked.

One giant whoooshie for me last week!!! Lost 5 pounds and am now only 5 lbs from goal.

Congrats, Don, on such a great weigh in! I think that we're really getting the hang of this.

Oh, I'm glad you ordered the book! Get ready to get angry... at least, that is how it has affected me. While it always has aggravated me when people try to "save" me from Atkins, now that I'm reading this book, I can downright come unglued at the subject. It is so scary how brainwashed this country is with regard to lowfat dogma. I feel so blessed to have found my way back to Atkins, and to have a doctor who understands it. I always have been a bit of a rebel, and the fact that I am embracing a WOE that is so controversial is par for the course.

Hey, I know what you mean about seeing yourself in the mirror. You literally don't recognize yourself for an instant... and it feels damn good when you realize it's you.
