Re: So , why are we so tough at ADBB about following Atkins to the letter?

    Food for thought...

I am very happy to follow atkins by the book and share my successes and share in other peoples success on the ADBB, as long as, I am treated respectfully.

So far I have not been disrespected, therefore, I am still here, but I do get the feeling that the members who have been around for a long time that are advocating the DANDR-2002, have seen many...many...people promise to be diligent and then come and go.

There is an aire of guardedness and disbelief in some of their responses, as well as goading you to put your money where your mouth is. I simply use this as extra incentive, not wanting to be one of those people that say I can do it, then doesn't, I owe it to myself and my family.

It is sad that people don't often follow through on such good intentions (you know what they say about that pathway to h*ll .LOL)

It's all about how you perceive the person responding to you. If you take their responses as a way to help you then you appreciate it, if you see it as someone trying to harrass you with "the facts" then they are going to seem rude and obnoxious.

At times we may all receive a response we don't like...it may even be condescending, or rude, but there is so much good support available here, why personalize those few comments and forgo such tremendous help and support? Just "ignore" the people you don't care for and talk to the ones you do, but remember...it may be the person you like the least that encourages you the most!

Like food, most folks want instant gratification when it comes to answering their ADKINS related questions and probably will post a question rather than wade thru the FAQ or even try to find the answer in the book. I really think that most folks understand that when they ask a question, they are just getting an opinion only and also know that if there are more than one answer to their question, someone on this board will come up with a different one in short order. Sure, the folks who are here late at night might not get a "perfect" answer right away but most of them will come back tomorrow and check to see if anyone else has commented on their quarry. Besides this isn't rocket science and it isn't black and white. You all know that we have had "heated discussion" on the little nuances of this WOE.
I just hope that we can give the best advice in the most loving and caring manner to those who ask. Some of our members are terribly sensitive about dealing with their weight and they have emotional issues that lurk in the background. Unlike those who lost 20/40 pounds to make goal, they have 200 pounds to lose and a lifetime of problems to go with that weight. We need to tread very carefully and since we don't know who is posting or their special problems, we need to care about everyones feelings, and treat them like they have brittal emotions. Once we get to know them, we can say what we like.

Re: So , why are we so tough at ADBB about following Atkins to the letter?

I have not gotten into any of these conversations so far but I just have one point I would like to make based on the feeling I get from some of the posts. It reminds me when I used to go to Alanon and when new people would come in and share and the old timers would laugh and say keep coming back. I always thought that made the newcomer feel like it was a secret they would only learn if they came back long enough to become part of the click. Made them feel like an outsider. Like Heidi said I think the phrase here "Read the Book" and "We do Dandr 2002 here" have become that same kind of phrase that makes a new comer feel like an outsider until they become an expert on "THE BOOK" I have never been one of the click anywhere I have ever gone. That is just the kind of person I am. I am usually the lone girl out and I am used to that but it is not always a nice place to be. Also, I have never read a book in one day and remembered all of it. I have to read and reread and every time I reread I find something that makes me stop and think where was I last time I read that or why didn't I know that. Also my being a very sarcastic person myself without knowing it most times have heard some things that sounded very sarcastic by. You know the meaning of sarcasm is "to tear flesh" or something close to that and it can be very hurtful. Saying hurtful things can never be totally taken back. It is like squeazing toothpaste all over someone then trying to go and scrape it off and put it back in the tube. Some of it still sticks to them. I know that email is hard to read a persons intent. Maybe we could read out posts and consider how it is going o sound BEFORE we send it and not just pop off a response because someone brought up this same topic AGAIN!!!!!! LOL

OK That might have been more than one point. But who is counting. I guess I got caught up in it too. haha

*bumping this up with a caveat*

I hope no one thinks that being diligent means being total kick-butts. I know we have a lot of new people coming along, and it's so important that it's known that here the policy is "by the book". I think also, because we're tough on ideas and soft on people, it's important that you know, as a newbie, that you are welcome here!

We'll do our best to guide you and to help you in your journey! Sometimes the message might seem harsh, but think about it, and take the information from it. We all have a different way of conveying what we think about that's helped us to be successful on this way of eating, but it's by the book.

It has to be. Without the book, we wouldn't be the board we are with the special people who help new folks when they first start out.

So please be patient, if you're new! Don't take things personally. You know you are so welcome here, and we appreciate you! Paying it forward is why we're here.

And we want you here. Right with us!

            You're worth it!
