  • Another Week, Another Pound...

    I know, I know...at least it's going down, right?
It's just the greedy little monkey in me wants MORE! FASTER!
My boyfriend pointed out to me that I'm having WAY too much fat and not enough protein, so I'm tweaking things a bit...we'll see if that speeds up the process. One thing I've done is I now have only egg whites in my morning omelette instead of the whole egg. I've also cut way back on cheese (mostly due to the yeasties). Anyone else have any ideas?

I want to shock my Mom by being skinnier than I was when I moved away last year (I weighed 185-190). I'll be seeing her August 12th.
    Impossible?

Good morning Erin! Congratulations on one more pound forever gone!

Hmmmm, opposite of what your boyfriend said, I found that tweaking my percentages higher in fat and lower in protein seems to put me back into losing weight. I read somewhere here on the boards recently that sometimes we need to tweak the percentages around to see what works best for us. So, tweak away!

Of course, the other questions would be, are you into OWL, are you exercising, are you drinking enough water, and are you staying away from Frankenfood?

    Good luck!

Dr. ATkins wrote that excess protein is converted to glucose. Depending on who you read, about 50% of protein is converted to glucose when your body is low on carbs. So, if you eat 100 grams of protein, at least 50 grams turned into glucose. Excess glucose is converted to fat and stored on your body parts.

You might want to read this article. It's pretty good and he references his sources:

Well my ratios are off. Like when you look at my food in Fitday, the little pie chart is like 3/4 fat. I'd be willing to say that even Dr Atkins might say "woah killer lay off the butter" on that one.
I am in OWL although I must say I'm floundering on it. Because of the yeasties, I've cut out a lot of the stuff I added on OWL, like the sour cream and berries.
And I'm also exercising although I'm in the market for a good pilates or yoga DVD to do at home.

You should have given them some numbers in the first post. I'm sure all of the read-the-bookers will agree that a 75-15-10 ratio is counter-productive.

Erin, it took me a while to figure out what works for me in Induction. I will have to readjust in OWL, I'm sure. Take some time and figure it out!

Just so you know, I never use butter, and rarely use olive oil. Most of my fat comes from cheese (and I keep it under 3 oz), mayonnaise (2-3 tbsp), eggs (2 per day) and meat. Interesting. Somehow it's working for me.

By the way, my ratio at the moment is 70% fat, 26% protein and 4% carbs. I know this will change as I go into OWL. When I was at a lower fat percentage, I was not losing and felt hungry - a lot! So, I'm an example of how tweaking the numbers can work in your favor.

            Again, good luck, my dear!

                Re: Another Week, Another Pound...

The reasons Atkins recommends more fat are 2-fold. You don't want protein in excess of what your body will use being turned to glucose. That amount depends on your metabolism, amount of exercise, and musculature. You also want higher fat so your body continues to feel well fed while burning fat in ketosis, rather than starving, and locking onto its fat reserves by slowing your metabolism. This gives you the metabolic advantage.

Percentages are percentages and can be easily manipulated by decreasing one or two factors. Since Erin's protein is "low", she can raise it by dropping her fat. For example, by dropping her fat percent to 60% and keeping her carb percent steady at 10%, her protein will increase to 30%.

The food percentages are based upon the caloric value of the macronutrient. Fat is more calorically dense than protein or carb. So it has a higher "percentage" value.

                  For example:

If you eat 10 grams of fat, 10 grams of protein and 10 grams of carb, the total calories will be 130, with fat providing 69% of the calories. protein and carb providing 15.5% each.

Drop the fat by 2 grams and keep the protein and carb grams the same, the total calories will be 112, with fat providing 64% of the calories, but the percentage of protein and carb will be increased to 18% each.

BTW, Erin, if you want people on the board to be supportive and not mind helping you, your boyfriend should drop the smart-aleck routine, especially when you are asking the "read-the-book" people for help. Per your and his threads, we know you are a couple and sometimes people view couples as 1 person. Therefore, any animosity people feel about him might be unfairly tranferred to you as well.

I should hope that I express a different enough attitude for people to know that he and I are two entirely seperate entities. That being said, he is his own person and I have no more control over him than anyone else does. Nor would I want to.

In regards to my original intent with this thread. I am tweaking things by dropping fat and thus upping the protein. It's not that I necessarily want to CONSUME more protein, but as not2late mentioned, it's more just tweaking the ratio.

Other than having egg whites...any other suggestions?

erin it is more important to know what and how much you are eating cause as Not2late just pointed our removing a little fat can raise the other two % dramatically. If youe were a chapter 20 postinduction Dr Atkins referee then 75% fats would not be wrong but you didn't give any history as to how you got to 75% fats. did you do your whole induction that high?

Out of curiousity since you are a yeastie in OWL and your induction alone didn't starve those buggers to death are you doing the KISS or the gold standard program now with Atkins as your plan?

2Big, I'm *kinda* doing kiss in that I am not eating any cheese aside from mozz and feta. I've also cut out vinegar and soy sauce. I also started a probiotic regimen called Daily Dophilous that I got at Whole Foods. I believe my ratios were a little more in check during induction. I got to that high of a fat ratio, I believe by A. being a complete butter fiend and B. 2 eggs every morning.
