Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

In the first few pages Dr. Atkins stress, its not a diet but a way of life.
When ever I tell someone about being on Atkins, they always say, but when you stop, you will gain it all back,
(I think this is true on all diets, so I dont know why they just say it about Atkins)

I get that too (about gaining it back after I quit). They are often astounded to find out I followed it 2 years (eventually on matenience) until I got PG. And they said (when i was in mat. last year b4 pg) i couldnt be on it because I ate a couple apple slices. I said READ THE BOOK! (like im rereading now)

          Page 4 Dr. Atkins writes:

"I want my readers to say, 'I knew I'd lose weight, but I never realized I would feel so much healthier.' " So true. I feel better than I ever remember feeling!

This certainly is a WOL. People keep asking me, "Are you still on that Atkins?" and I explain, "Yes, I am still following Atkins. I will be following it. It's not a quick diet, it's a complete way of eating that you follow for a lifetime of feeling good."

Ohh yeah, I was freezer my Butt off this morning!

Yeah basically we are back to front, when it's summer in America, it's winter down here, and vice versa.

I can't tell you have many Christmases in Northern Australia where I felt like passing out from the heat! No white Christmas for us!

Every time I get the line about gaining it back I give the same answer about falling off any long term plan. And I get the vegetable/fruit reaction also. I've already offered to buy the book for at least 3 people.

SD1136, yes I have heard others say that too. And even the man the urged me to get on the Atkins wagon with him has gone back to his old way of eating. And that's just it. Atkins is not a diet...Thank you Dr. A. Its a new Way of Eating. My friend Juan lost over 120 lbs 3 yrs ago. Now he has gained it back because he went back to his old way of eating and no exercize. Its the old way of eating that gets us.
Lord, my dream is to lose this weight and to be healthier.

I"m at the "sugar" section , around page 24, and I'm really under the impression that one must not really think of eating out and eating things which could be "sugar-free" or induction friendly, let's say ...Caesar Salad (minus the croutons of course ), but the dressing most probably has sugar in it?

I mean do they put sugar in practically everything, all sauces, dressings, etc??

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

I read the section on overeating last night, and have a few thoughts about it...

I identify myself as the "B" Type, the one who constantly eats. Between my first attempt at Atkins and today, I have followed a much more structured low-carb plan (OA's Greysheet), in which I weighed everything before eating it. I did that for over one year, and now I can do what Dr. Atkins describes in the book (eat sane amounts).

But I have found his assertion that there are no compulsive overeaters of steaks simply untrue. Maybe I'm just a different type, but I used to overeat everything. EVERYthing. That's why I couldn't lose weight the first time around. I wasn't just into sugars: I was into amounts, too. I didn't lose weight while eating 3,000 calories a day, even though they were all Atkins induction friendly.

And what doesn't make it easier for many people is the use of sweeteners and/or processed low-carb foods. If the theory was correct that the problem lies only in the carbs, then we should be able to eat from these foods without problems. Maybe others can, too, but I know I never could. I ate them like I did regular sugars, and I often paid the horrible price (it's atrocious what this stuff does to your digestive system when you eat it in large quantities).

For me the solution was to learn what normal amounts were, before Atkins would work for me - a rigid structure first, and now I am able to move into the freedom that is Atkins without abusing it.
I want to be thin. I want to be a runner. Why can't I get it into my head that both things require work??

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

I read through the first few chapters again today and the insulin chapter (chapter 5) really jumped out at me. So many products are marketed toward increasing energy and stamina, with no consdieration for the long term effects. i was an energy pill, drink and bar junkie for a long time. I would go through so many Red Bulls a day i started buying them in bulk. I knew about the ups and downs of blood sugar and should have known better but you get stuck in a cycle of up and down and it seems the only thing that takes the edge off is another drink or a candy bar, etc. I can't believe how much sugar I was putting in my body. And forget about white flour and the other refined carbohydrates. No wonder I'd get a headache and crave bread. I'm on an even keel these days and I wish I had known sooner.

hey welcome back weinerin love your new siggy pics.

yep i too disagreed with the overing eating of meat thingie but as i learned to listen to my hunger I was like I could eat this cause I got room but I'm not hungry WOW what a choice to make. to sit and knowing I'm not hungry stuff it in my mouth cause it is Atkins legal and I got room or do the right thing and walk away putting the left overs in the frig. needless to say i visited my leftovers frequently but it only took a few bites to be in that situation again so the seving sizes got smallerand smaller to start with and the pounds jumped off as a reward.

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

I read my 103 pages this past weekend. I don't mind reading about the metabolic stuff (of course, I've read the book a few times so I understand it....mostly). So much of it just makes sense and I don't understand why the entire medical profession hasn't figured this out. It's also reassuring to know that it is not all in my head. Or my stomach. I know what it's like to be addicted to cigarettes (smoke free for 5 months as of today) and that's how I feel about carbs. Bad carbs I mean. When I'm in the grip of the carb addiction it doesn't matter if the stuff tastes good or if I even want it. It's like something inside is forcing me to eat that crap and I can't help it. So I know I have to be stronger about avoiding it in the first place.

We also have ads for Special K, PresidentHolmes. For a while they were saying you could lose a bunch of weight in 6 weeks if you ate only a bowl of Special K for breakfast and lunch and then a sensible dinner. Does this sound like an intelligent plan to anyone?? Anyone??? Ridiculous.

People think I'm being too strict when I tell newbies to be mindful of their portion sizes for the "eat liberally" foods. But, alot of us have no clue what a "normal" portion of meat or fats or veggies are!
