Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

i have been on a whirlwind of events and am getting started with reading but many of you are ahead of me.
i have enjoyed reading the comments:
presidents holmes, i was going to bring up the special k cereal stuff. i am with LIR. these commercials say one bowl in the morning, one at lunch and sensible dinner and you will lose weight. i want to just laugh when i see that. who indeed wants to eat like that when you can have the freedom of what this woe presents! i have liked your quotes from the book too.

some are now talking about portion control. i ventrured out of my safe haven journals one night and came across a post where a member was asking about mayonaise. this member wes indulging in 12 tablespoons a day. i stated in an edit that yes we were allowed mayonaise and dr. a states in liberal amounts but what some tend to forget is that you shouldn't be eating past the full mark just because it's "induction friendly" or "alalowable".

lynn, that is one of the reasons i don't make alot of the things that i could. even at this stage i would not trust myself. i would be afraid of eating 5 portions instead of 1. i have worked too hard for too long to take steps backwards.

i am really enjoying reading everyones comments!

So here we are reading the book in increments to gain better understanding, and I have a question for those of you who've been here on adbb for a while. How do you keep from getting totally flustered when someone asks or says something, claiming to have read the book cover to cover when it's plain that they haven't? I find myself not participating in some threads because it's obvious they could care less what the actual fact is as opposed to what sounds good. I'm no expert but it seems when you try to clarify something or maybe just point out the obvious it comes across as attacking. How hard is it to read the book? ::that was a bit of a rant I guess::

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

About portion sizes...I used to have a huge problem with those. I often wondered WHO decided how much a portion was because 10 times out of 10, it did nothing to satisfy MY hunger.

I got interested in Atkins because my brother was on it and he highly recommended it. He didn't have a lot of weight to lose but he said that Atkins never failed him. So I went out and bought the book and started reading. I was hooked by the time I got through the first chapter. I found it all so interesting and it really made sense. I also wondered why I've never heard of another doctor recommending Atkins to his/her patients. Anyway, that's why I started the first time. I may have failed Atkins a couple times, but my brother was right...Atkins never fails me!

sam, we smile pretty, take a break from the board, try to encourage but sometimes there is a point of getting real. always with niceness and sometimes to the point. case by case.

kate, i am taking a stab in the dark and saying the FDA set those portions. good comments about atkins not failing us!

Oh I know (regarding someone who says they "follow" atkins to the "t")They say they are following atkins, but when I say are you on induction they say, "what is induction" and then smile as they snack on store bought beef jerkey that the second ingredient is SUGAR!

Whoa, 12 tbs! But you know what, I used to be that person. I'm with Kate, those FDA-defined portion sizes were (or seemed) ridiculously small to me. Some of them still do, and in fact, often as I prepare my meals I'm frustrated at how small it all seems and how hungry I am. But the thing is, now that I know portion sizes and stick to them, I find that at the end of a meal I am satisfied. I don't think I could have a big plate of food and simply stop halfway, because during eating I don't actually feel that "enough" feeling. I only know afterwards because I'm not hungry again half an hour later.

2big, thanks - the funny thing is, it's come off so slowly that I never saw any difference in the mirror. Only when I dug up that old picture somewhere on my hard drive it hit me - WOW, I sure look different!

Desertthorn, what I do when I make recipes of multiple servings (I love my crockpot!) is I divide the servings out and put them in the fridge or freezer individually. The best time to do this is after a meal. So not only are the portions defined already, but they're even conveniently accessible - fast food, Atkins-style. I love it!

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

I'm reading about the net carb concept right now. Having read Atkins' original book from the 70's, and now the 2002 version, this is obviously new. And I know that on these boards the idea of net carbs has been discussed, too.

I was just wondering, what are your thoughts on them? Do you count net carbs, or all? Or do you make a distinction of which carbs can be "net" counted and which ones can't, such as sugar alcohols versus fiber?

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

When I came started Dr Atkins used 2 terms net carbs total minus fiber and net effective carbs total minus fiber minus sugar alcohols minus hydrogenates starches minus glycerine minus...

I used net carbs and ignored the net effective carbs. Some where in 2003 Dr Atkins and the Atkins site dropped the net effect and called it net carbs. I coined the phrase magical mythical counting noncounting carbs when discussing them on ADBB. there was a petition by Atkins Nutritionals and other low carb products back in 2001 when the FDA told them they had to list those NEC on the nutritional label to have them all declared fiber. By definition anything labled fiber goes in your mouth and out your butt unmetabolized. The FDA said no way no how to them!!!! So they created their own box called net effect carbs on the packages and said 2 whenthe back label said 29 for many of the candies.

The testing to see if it effects blood sugar is done on blood draws at 30 min 1 hr up to 4 hrs but since many ofthose fibers take longer to digest like the Dreamsfield pasta stuff they sit in the stomach longer and then get to the small intestine later. Many folk get a spike 5-6 hrs later and are like what was that. Dana Carpender who does the HOILDTHE TOAST newsletter actually uses herself as a guinie pig on that kind of stuff and wrote up low carb bars and got a spike hours later and wrote I don't know what that spike was. things like sugar alcohols are known to react with gut bacteria to become digestable carbs BUT the comnpanies say it doesn't occur until they get to the large intestine where their is less time to absorb them all so they get to count them lower. The European Union much like our FDA made companies count several of the sugar alcohols at higher cals and carbs back in 2002. It is obvious from diabetics reactions that the effect you get depends on your healthy gut bacteria levels the speed of motility of your intestinal tract and how much is present from other sourvces too like the naturally occurring ones in some fruits, proteins, and veggies.

Have you noticed how none of the books say BTW you can deduct the naturally occurring sugar alcohols from those foods too?

Before I used to write alot of "That's not in the book." or "Dr. Atkins didn't write that.", now I tend to write things like "according to DANDR 2002, Chapter 22, section _______". Sure people could ignore it if they want, but for other people reading the threads, it can serve as a useful reference.

Also, alot of people read only Chapter 11 and put the book down, thinking Induction is the entire Atkins Diet. Others go by what they read in a magazine or what their best friend's former roommate's second cousin's mother-in-law's co-worker's niece says how to do the diet. So, it's understandable that people don't understand the diet because they haven't taken the time to really read up on it.

I see nothing wrong with what you wrote. You didn't insult anyone or call anyone names.

I'm a stickler because I've seen too many people (in real life) "follow" Atkins, fail, then run around that Atkins doesn't work. My sister's husband followed "Atkins" Induction for a month. His daily menu was: breakfast a slimfast shake and a bag of pork rinds, lunch: a sandwich (a regular bread and filling sandwich), a bag of pork rinds and 3 Diet Rites, afternoon snack 6 hard boiled eggs or 8 slices of cheese, dinner 1 whole chicken or 2 steaks, 2 Diet Rites, evening snack 2 bags of pork rinds with a cup of sour cream. He gained weight after his "Atkins". Then went on an anti-Atkins rampage.

I still hear it from him during family dinners "blah blah blah I did Atkins and I gained weight!", "blah blah blah, you don't eat any vegetables on Atkins. I know because I did it for a month and gained weight!"

There were 2 times that I confronted him about it because he just really got on my nerves. I told him he wasn't doing Atkins and told him to show me stuff in the book. He backed down and said he was doing a "modified Atkins". Anyhow.......

i have 2ibg on the brain. she has suggested to me so many times that i sit at the computer while sitting on the stability ball. other things too. so here i am in a reading challenge biking and reading at the same time.

all the folks doing this woe have called this "doing Atkins". what i am doing now is "doing a 2ibg". lololol

i have found much of this first part a real cheerleader, lets do this thing, type of read. always have. i found that many things that i answered yes to (group A, B and C in chapter 4, IS THIS YOU) before doing atkins, i found myself saying "no" to now. i've come a long way.

megs, that's the kind of thing i hear people say and have heard it all along. i think people have the idea that an atkins staple food is pork rinds! we visited with my sister several times since my start on this and each time we go my bil is very eager to tell me "i got you some pork rinds!". i always wonder if he opened the bag when i left and ate any of those himself. lol

Was just musing on something... Dr A writes that primitive peoples lived on meats, fruits, berries etc. and were strong and healthy on that diet. That's true... and with all their hunting/gathering, they got in plenty of exercise too!

What he doesn't mention is the survival age in those long ago times... probably not much more than thirty, for many, many reasons. I wonder what sort of health problems they'd have had if they'd lived longer on average. Would a low fat diet have shortened their lifespan even further, or not have had much effect as they rarely reached a more shaky (healtwise) age? Not being critical of what Dr Atkins says, at all... just throwing the consideration out, and wondering if anyone has any thoughts.

Tomorrow, I'm going gathering wild asparagus. Think I'll take my spear along with me ... see... at 52, I feel like I'm in my thirties!!
