One of the main myths of Atkins is that you can eat the whole cow, 3 jars of mayo and no veggies and lose weight... helloooooooo! I mean come on, and is not high protein, is low carb, but there is still carbs, GOOD carbs like veggies.
And I dont dislike pork rinds, but yeah, most people thinks this is what we eat all day. This WOE is by far the healthiest of all I know and I am not hungry (jeez some days my clothes are loose and I dont feel hungry, my brain is looking for the hunger because in my mind you cant be satisfied and loose weight)

SAM, i tell them i don't liver or kidneys. lol usually stops the conversation.

truthfully, i have not had the kinds of experiences that many of our members have. i see stories much like what megs has related and i don't know if i just have a way about me but when asked early on "what are you doing to lose weight" i said "low carb, following atkins" and people looked at me, said "oh" and left me alone. the proof was in what they were seeing. a smaller jimmiejo.

        interesting comments, sal.
        and good reply, megs.

You're lucky Jimmie. I have alot of overweight family members who think I'm crazy because I'm doing the "dangerous Atkins Diet" to lose weight. Last Mother's Day, I wrote my experience during the Mother's Day Brunch I attended with the female members of my extended family. Basically, they were inhaling cakes, cookies, and other stuff, while telling me how unhealthly my Atkins meal (meat, veg, fruit) was.

i believe you but that is unbelievable! know what i mean? my mom wonders what i eat but she doesn't press the issue. she will offer a piece of pie and then takes it back saying "i suppose you can't eat this". i tell her i can eat what i want. i just don't want that. now give me the cherries before they went in the pie and i'm all ready for it!

but i know what you mean. people will stand around a table eating the worst things and complain because they had to loosen a belt or buy a bigger size shirt. welll duh!

            good conversation you guys.
now i have to go revise a post i think. some are wondering where the little button is for the read and i have to say, you get it after we get done here. no hit it, git it and running out on us here!

Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

I think I get the silly questions because I've gone through a lot of different eating phases. I was vegan, raw, fasted, you name it. Most of it is in good nature. I say the same thing, "I can eat it, I just don't want it." i actually got into Atkins because of an aunt who has had success with the wol. it's just those special few who like to bust chops.

Word - you too? I've done the same... I was actually vegan for two years (more than one of them on McDougall: fat free, entirely!), raw, fasted - wow! I guess we all have our history, I just never thought there'd be many others who have come through veganism like me, since it's such a reversal of ideas. Cool, anyway!

I do the same thing with questions about food. "No thanks" works wonders, and on quizzical inquiries I just say I don't like it. Or I don't want it. Often people will furnish their own reasons why you're not eating it (oh, is this because it's sugary? - then I simply agree or nod my head). Whatever works!
I want to be thin. I want to be a runner. Why can't I get it into my head that both things require work??

I was ovo veg for a while and vegan for almost a year. One day I just really wanted a steak, lol.

--By good natured, I ment the chop busting. My eating variances were all in the name of "health", so I suppose that was with good intentions also.

But I have found his assertion that there are no compulsive overeaters of steaks simply untrue. Maybe I'm just a different type, but I used to overeat everything. EVERYthing. That's why I couldn't lose weight the first time around. I wasn't just into sugars: I was into amounts, too. I didn't lose weight while eating 3,000 calories a day, even though they were all Atkins induction friendly. ...

For me the solution was to learn what normal amounts were, before Atkins would work for me - a rigid structure first, and now I am able to move into the freedom that is Atkins without abusing it.
Great post, as I am now learning some of the basics such as what "hunger" and "fullness" are. I am in the exact same boat as you were once, I am reaching 3,000 cals, just overeating in general, although it's all legal. I took Dr. A's liberal comment too much to heart, in a way one can only do if you live in San Francisco.

I am just waiting, waiting for this change to happen for me:

"It's not that you eat when you're not hungry, but you seem to be always hungry. And yet when you eat the high carbohydrate food you crave, you feel better only briefly. Your situation is the exact opposite of the one you'll experience when you do Atkins. When doing Atkins, you'll find that your appetite has diminshed, but the satisfaction from food you eat has increased"

                          kjspea,
sometimes people do carry that "liberal" too far even with legal. alot of us have had to learn "eat to live, not live to eat".

i have been able to get through chapter 5. i have to tell you and being honest about it, i can't seem to wrap my brain around the whole insulin thing. i have a dear friend who is diabetic but beyond that, i have no one close that this hits home with. if i did, i suppose i would grasp it better.

one comment that struck me was hardest i guess was this, found on page 53,
For now, just remember a bad diet produces results that are not merely dosmetically unattractive: it flies the black flag of smoe of the very worst health catastophes.

I think my biggest challenge with part one has been determining what my actual problem was/is. I thought it was mostly bad eating habits and laziness. I never actually acknowledged that it could go deeper than that.

sam, i guess the first thing we all had/have to do is figure out the why's so we don't repeat the unhealthy eating habits that got us into trouble in the first place.

i felt particularly sorry for the people who are insuling dependant and how they can just sprial out of control. that must be a most horrible feeling.

i'll have to re read that part of part one several more times because it still is not sinking in.

Dr A's teachings on insulin start out fairly clear but then get more complicated. I too have difficulty getting my brain around the science of it. And what I do understand when I read it, I forget five minutes later! 2big, I need your memory!!! (IQ too!!!)
