Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program
A few thoughts on various discussion topics (and may I add, I love this thread?)
Sceptics who tell you about the "dangers" of Atkins: I haven't really encountered anybody who told me I was eating unhealthily, but that's probably owing to the fact that I didn't tell anybody that this was Atkins. People just see what I eat and I seem to have earned a reputation for eating healthily! Funny how that is: the mere name "Atkins" seems to draw up such a big red flag for many people that they just don't see what you're actually eating. But remove the red flag (i.e. not telling them it's Atkins) and they see without prejudice. I realize I'm perhaps not advocating Atkins as it deserves to be, but when somebody in need does approach me - and it happens, seeing that I have lost about 40 lbs. - I tell them in private. I don't hide the fact that I do Atkins, I just find diet to be quite a private matter that isn't up for public discussion.

I haven't found this process to happen naturally to me. For a long time, I sat and waited for my appetite to diminish, and it didn't. I believe the reason for that was that my eating didn't have a lot to do with physical hunger; so while my hunger was lessened, I had simply developed habits of eating and habits of amounts that weren't helpful. I had to act, rather than wait for something to change in me: I had to change it. What that meant for me was to define meals - that is to say, I eat three meals a day with nothing in between but water. That was difficult at first, but it helped me confine eating to meal times. And because my physical hunger was under control, I found that I was well able to go from one meal to the next without discomfort. In fact, I would be getting a faint feeling of hunger just when mealtime arrived, which only makes a meal taste better! So my three meals a day were contained, and then I made sure that the amounts were adequate but not over the top (fitday helps in that respect). So when I finished a meal, I knew that I had had enough - not necessarily feeling as full as I'd want to be, but fitday told me how much enough was and I left it at that. And over time I found out that these amounts were perfectly enough to carry me through to the next meal - and in between the meals, I'd often forget about food altogether! Now that's a miracle for me.

Net carbs: thanks Megs for clearing that up. It wasn't particularly relevant to me personally, since I stay away from sweeteners altogether and don't eat processed foods, but that whole net carb/ net effective carb thing got me in so much trouble the first time I did Atkins. I would binge on low carb chocolate, ice cream, bars... if the theory was true that we binge because of sugar, well, I have disproved that one.
It was the taste, for me. So I binged, paid the price (terrible), and obviously didn't lose weight.

I am just waiting, waiting for this change to happen for me:
"It's not that you eat when you're not hungry, but you seem to be always hungry. And yet when you eat the high carbohydrate food you crave, you feel better only briefly. Your situation is the exact opposite of the one you'll experience when you do Atkins. When doing Atkins, you'll find that your appetite has diminshed, but the satisfaction from food you eat has increased"

You have obviously worked hard to get where you're at, this shows a great deal of determination, dedication & control!
And congrats on keeping away from the sweeteners & processed foods, that is impressive too!

It's a lovely discussion here, lots of interesting questions raised. I re-read that bit on fiber the other day, and I hadn't been taking flax yet - but after that I did a bit of research on this board and people seem to love it... encouraging its use... so I bought a pack and will start having a TBS per day.
