  • Re: I Am Worth It Challenge ~ Friday's Assignment

    DAY 5 Friday
    1. Share with the other Challengers, the positive coments you have received as you have lost weight and increased your exercise. Comment on how those remarks made you feel.

"Wow! You're shrinking before our eyes! What's your secret?" It's always a great feeling when people notice that you've lost weight and for me, it feels really good.

"Did you do something with your hair...something about you looks different." I guess sometimes people aren't so observant, but a thinner face can make you look different.

    2. Think of how you can be positive when negative remarks are made to you.
State your positive answers to the following:

"Atkins is a fad diet that doesn't work. Why would you choose to do that diet anyway? You know people die from eating no carbs." I don't know where you are getting your misinformation from, but Atkins is not a fad diet. It's a lifestyle change. We eat plenty of carbs, and in fact, I eat more veggies now than I ever did before I started Atkins.

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?" It was easy to stick to the Atkins plan, and I don't ever see myself leaving it. I'm very satisfied and happy with my new WOE.

"Your exercise is getting you nowhere. I don't see any changes whatsoever." The measuring tape tells me otherwise and it doesn't lie. I feel better and my clothes are a lot looser on me. So even if you can't tell or won't admit it, I HAVE lost a lot of inches and my healthier body thanks me everyday.

"Come on, it's the best carrot cake ever made! It's made special from the Carbs-R-Us Bakery. One piece is not going to kill you." I don't appreciate being pressured to eating or doing something that I am not willing to do. If you respect me, you will not force me to eat that cake.

i guess it didn't get posted yesterday... oh well here it is again...

      inspirational quote..

Harmony3098 - hi sandy, i had the same experience of feeling like i didn't care when i had a cheat too. that's the scary part for me b/c it can become a downward spiral...and pretty easily. for me, i eat...it is my comfort, my joy, my sadness, my naughtiness...everything. i am an eater. for me to stay on track with atkins, i have to confront those things and sometimes, i plain don't wanna...i would rather eat. i choose to eat. this is who i am and what i do...for now. but each time i resist, each time i climb back in the saddle, i am honoring the part of me fighting for change...and peace. keep coming back, sandy!!

Wow I didn't know you were on a diet
You are looking great! What are you doing differently?
Do you always eat this healthy?

Remarks like these keep me going and keep me motivated. I have self motivation too but it is always good to get a little boost from other people.

          2. Think of how you can be positive when negative remarks are made to you.
State your positive answers to the following:

I usually just don't deal with negative comments and negative people in general and don't feel the need to explain myself to others...but...

"Atkins is a fad diet that doesn't work. Why would you choose to do that diet anyway? You know people die from eating no carbs."

Here, read the book and see for yourself.

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?"

Sticking with something starts with one day... today is that day. Plus I am happy and eating healthy and losing weight. What could be better?

"Your exercise is getting you nowhere. I don't see any changes whatsoever."

You should see my fitday report. I see changes =)

"Come on, it's the best carrot cake ever made! It's made special from the Carbs-R-Us Bakery. One piece is not going to kill you."

No it won't kill me but it won't sustain me either. I don't need to have it right now... but thanks for offering.

              DAY 5 Friday

              1. Share with the other Challengers, the positive coments you have received as you have lost weight and increased your exercise. Comment on how those remarks made you feel.

August 2005 - A friend of mine was walking down the hall behind me at a conference and remarked: "WOW, what happened to your butt? You are 1/3 the size you used to be!"

December 2006 - At my husband's end of the year company party his boss (who knew me when I was fat) said: "I hope you don't mind me saying, you are looking fantastic."

March 2007 - I went on a truck trip with husband. You have to weigh the truck after its loaded and the gate guard said, "If you have any passengers, have them step out so you aren't overweight. I stepped out and he waved me back into the truck and said, "Oh, your small...you won't add any weight to the load, you can get back in."

November 2006 - I hadn't seen one of my husband's sisters for several years. I had on a coat. She said, "Hi, how are you? As she took my coat...she stepped back and gasped "WHERE are you? OMG, you're dissappearing."

September 2006 - I had my knees replaced in April/May 2006. I went back to the doctor in September for a check up. He said, "I want you to know that nearly ALL my patients gain weight after they've had knee replacements. I expected to see you 20-40 pounds heavier and the fact that you are still the same weight today 4 months after surgery is amazing."

When I receive these kinds of comments, It gives me a feeling of inner happiness that I've never had in my life. Going from being a fat person my entire life to a normal size is a blessing that words can't describe. All the hard work over the past three years is so totally worth the satisfaction and peace of mind that I now have. Life is so much better with less weight to carry around. The best compliments are the ' daily unspoken ones' from my husband. I find him looking at me and winking and giving me hugs for no reasons more often than before. I think he felt rejected before because I never went anywhere or did anything. Now, he knows that I love to go places and be with him - so he's feeling the satisfaction of my weight loss too.

              2. Think of how you can be positive when negative remarks are made to you.
State your positive answers to the following:

"Atkins is a fad diet that doesn't work. Why would you choose to do that diet anyway? You know people die from eating no carbs."

I've never received this comment before...but if I did, I'd tell them that Atkins isn't a NO CARB diet, its a healthy life-style change reducing sugars, starches and refined carbs. If you're interested, I could loan you the book or show you some of the meals I eat.

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?"

I've had others say "I couldn't be happy eating Atkins meals" I've said, "I wasn't happy eating the non-Atkins way. I've lost weight, feel better, I'm healthier and I have much more energy and I couldn't be happier now with my new life-style. That's why I am sticking to this way of life"

"Your exercise is getting you nowhere. I don't see any changes whatsoever."

I've also never had this comment made to me. I can't really relate to it because I have lost inches and shrunk in clothes size from the beginning. When I first started, even tho I'd lost weight and inches, it was 60 pounds before I got my first compliment and I'd already gone down 3 sizes.

                    FRIDAY'S ASSIGNMENT:

                    1. Share with the other Challengers, the positive coments you have received as you have lost weight and increased your exercise. Comment on how those remarks made you feel.

                    - Both my husband and my son often remark about the fact that they couldn't get their arms all the way around me not too long ago, and now their arms overlap when they hug me. Makes me feel great, because that is tangible evidence of getting smaller.

                    - I work in a boutique, and customers are starting to notice my weight loss. Since they don't see me everyday, I guess it is easier for them to notice a difference when they come in than someone I see daily. Nice to have the reinforcement that I do, indeed, look different.

                    2. Think of how you can be positive when negative remarks are made to you.
State your positive answers to the following:

"Atkins is a fad diet that doesn't work. Why would you choose to do that diet anyway? You know people die from eating no carbs."

                    - Atkins is a low carb way of eating, not no carb. How many vegetables do you eat each day? I chose that way of eating because it is healthy and it satisfies me.

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?"

                    - I am eating want I want, and that makes me very happy. You say I've never stuck with anything? Watch me...

"Your exercise is getting you nowhere. I don't see any changes whatsoever."

                    - That's odd, because I was wearing a size 16 jeans in March, and now I am in a 12.

"Come on, it's the best carrot cake ever made! It's made special from the Carbs-R-Us Bakery. One piece is not going to kill you."

                    - No, thanks. Don't worry about me, I have plenty of yummy things at home that I can eat. Cottage cheese with a couple of drops of Splenda and a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa... awesome!

Thanks for the weekend break from assignments, Jimmie. Gotta work tommorow. Have a great weekend, everyone!

“Cheri, you look so happy? What’s going on?”

“Wow! I can tell you are losing weight. What are you doing?”

“Cheri, your shirt is too big! GO BUY CLOTHES!” (My friend in the school’s front office.)

“Cheri, I can really tell you are losing weight.” (My dh – isn’t he sweet?)

All of these comments made me feel great, but the best was from my dh, who rarely notices anything!

                        2. Think of how you can be positive when negative remarks are made to you.

I DO eat carbs. I just get my carbs from healthy veggies and other good foods, not from white potatoes, white flour, and sugar-laden foods like I used to.

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?"

I wasn’t happy before I started eating this way. I was moody, ill, and fatigued. Now I feel energized and ready to do anything!

"Your exercise is getting you nowhere. I don't see any changes whatsoever."

That’s what you think. I can tell the difference and that’s all that matters.

"Come on, it's the best carrot cake ever made! It's made special from the Carbs-R-Us Bakery. One piece is not going to kill you."

Since sugar and bad carbs give me terrible cravings that cause me to binge and eat really bad foods, yes, one bite could eventually kill me.

I haven't recieved much in the way of comments- either positive or negative. But it does make me feel glad when my mother says she's proud of me for sticking to this wol.

"Atkins is a fad diet that doesn't work. Why would you choose to do that diet anyway? You know people die from eating no carbs."
It's not about eating no-carbs, it's about eating low-carb. And depending on what the person talking to me was doing/eating, I might tell the person to put down the & .

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?"
"I won't be happy with diabetes. I'm NOT happy with all this weight dragging me down. Why would you say something like that to me?" Really, half of the people who critize dieters are the ones who don't want to change their own eating habits.

"Your exercise is getting you nowhere. I don't see any changes whatsoever."
I know it will be a long process. And I can only tell you that I feel better. Also, did you notice that I'm wearing a shirt with sleeves? If I had only known you wanted a ticket to the gun show!

Heh, I forgot this one: "Come on, it's the best carrot cake ever made! It's made special from the Carbs-R-Us Bakery. One piece is not going to kill you."
"No thank you. I'm fine with my tea & whatever. No, really. Yes, really." Repeat as needed.

You seem to be misinformed. I choose this woe because it's healthy and livable. As for dying of no carbs, have you ever read the histories of the Inuit peoples living near the arctic circle..?

"You've never stuck with anything. Why not just eat what you want and be happy?" I'll stick with this one thanks, I'm happy to be allowed strawberries with real whipped cream and pecans! Want some?

The bars are no good for a few reasons...

                                1) YOU HAVE TO COUNT ALL OF THE SUGAR ALCOHOLS! True, the big number on the front of the bar says 3g net carbs, but look at the nutrition label and it has 4g fiber, 3g sugar, and 21g of sugar alcohols. You need to count the bar as 24g carbs. Why? Because sugar alcohol is absorbed just like regular sugar in some peoples bodies. How do you know if you're one of them? If you don't get a case of diarrhea, then the sugar alcohols were absorbed by your body.

                                2) THEY CAUSE HUGE CRAVINGS! Eat one, and you want another one 5 minutes later? Why? Because they're nothing more than glorified candy bars.

                                3) THEY ARE NOT LEGAL FOR INDUCTION! True! If you check out the ingredients, the bars contain milk, nuts, soy products, fruit, and sometimes grains. These ingredients are not legal until the later rungs of OWL. So even though something CLAIMS to be induction-legal, check the ingredients to get the real scoop.

                                4) THEY ARE EXPENSIVE! It's much cheaper to make your own beef jerky, buy pepperoni, eat cut veggies with dip, and eat string cheese.

                                5) YOU ARE NOT LEARNING TO EAT WHOLE FOODS! By relying on bars and shakes, you are not giving your body whole, unprocessed foods, which is the foundation of Atkins.

If you want the most success, it's best to do a clean induction--this means NO frankenfoods. Frankenfoods are all those specially formulated and modified foods like LC bars, LC shakes, Sugar Free chocolates, etc. On induction we want to BREAK the bad habits that got us here, whether it's coffee, soda, our sweet tooth, binging, etc.

I hope this helps! I feel it's always best to know the information before you make a final decision. When I read about all the no-no's surrounding bars and shakes, I stopped eating them and did a clean induction. I haven't had them since. At first I thought "Holy cow, how do these people eat all these real foods all the time?" But now, I can't imagine eating anything else, and wouldn't eat one of those bars if you paid me.
