i'm glad you mentioned about sugar alcohols. mostly where i have found them was in ice cream, candy and that sort of thing. nothing that is induction friendly.
The original 1972 book only required one week of Induction and you were only allowed 10 grams of carbs from salad--not a long list. It was very strict--you weren't even allowed spinach (or tomatoes or onions). Many times when a member tells someone that tomatoes and onions are not allowed on Induction, it's because they are going by the old book.

good discussions going on! i'm thankful at this point that we are using the 2002 edition. i'm like bio in that i didn't realize how different the versions are.

thanks for bringing those facts to the table, sunny.

heidi, don't let this confuse you. what we need to know is what the 2002 edition tells us. the other stuff is good discussion but won't have bearing on what we do here on this board.

i've started on part three and have chapter 20 read. i'm so very thankful that i have not had to deal with the things in this chapter. taking off 40 + plus pounds was hard enough and my heart just aches for those members that are on medications and have lots and lots of pounds to lose. it must get extremely frustrating.

Due to having to "rest" my knee my reading is done & the last question on the homework has me stumped. Of course I stayed up last night trying to find the answer & only frustrated myself. Plenty of time to figure it out.

Chapter 21 is my favorite chapter. My weight problem stemmed from emotion. I use to eat to stuff down my feelings of anger & frustration. This chapter just speaks the truth to me...I think the whole chapter is highlighted. I turn to it often if I'm struggling or just need reassurance. As with the whole book I really feel this chapter is vital to success in this WOE/WOL.

At Thanksgiving Dinner we always share something we are thankful for. This year my response will be ADBB!!!

I think that when I did Atkins the very first time, I had 40net carbs a day on induction... this was around 1999 (I think) and I must have really been eating up the carbs prior to that because in 3 months I lost nearly 30 lbs!! thinking on it now, I must not have ever gotten myself into Ketosis either.

Now I get headaches in the evenings every day, and I know that I am in ketosis... if I don't have that headache, I know that I've overdone the carbs somewhere.

And I don't recall having made a big deal out of veggies... I think my diet mainly consisted of meat and cheese that entire time! (YIKES!) I'm glad that the "rules" have changed and veggies are a big part of the carb intake now...

I'm much further behind in my reading than I intended to be!! I've got a meeting tomorrow morning, but I'm going to attempt to dedicate the afternoon to getting caught up. We'll see how it goes. I've got the homework all printed out, so I can work on it as I go along.

You can say that again and again!!! I am so thankful for this whole forum. I am extra glad that I joined this challenge. Even though I have read and read several of the books, this is the first time I have read every word, every chapter, front to back. It is re-inspiring me and giving me a second wind! I have been spinning my wheels for so long, and even though I have lost 120 pounds, I still have a very long way to go. I am inspired by every challenge I belong to and by every thread in which I participate. I even started some gentle exercise over a week early! Shhhhhh! Don't tell my doc! I am now testing recipes and plan to have an absolutely awesome LEGAL Thanksgiving! I love you all!!!

I finished reading part 3 today. It was much shorter than part 2. Also, my hometown doctor didn't send my lab results to the hemotologist, so I had to wait for a while.

I'll probably review it again this week and finish the homework. I enjoyed the part about writing down reasons for doing Atkins, results, and is it worth staying with it for a lifetime. I was writing down some of those when I got interrupted, so going to finish doing that. I think I'll post them in my bathroom where I get ready. Better to start the day reminding myself of why I'm doing this than to forget and go off track. I'll discuss more later, kinda tired tonight.

Homework is done! Put the part about asking people to respect your needs to work last night. My mom is coming here for Turkey Day & usually asks me to make all the traditional stuff. She asked for pumpkin pie. I asked her if a crustless pumpkin bake was okay...her comment was "As long as it has pumpkin in it & I can have whipped cream you can make whatever you want." Gotta love mom!
                      Have a great holiday everyone!
