OK...finally got the homework all done...but I have to admit, i am going to sit down with the answers and re-read the whole thing. I have been going at this half-heartedly for the past few weeks---too many ups and down work wise I think---and I need to make this work like it did before...

In regards to being an Atkins revolutionary, one thing we can all try to do is correct the mis-information floating around. For example, you always hear that Atkins is deficient in fruits and vegetables. Fact: the first 2 weeks (induction to us) requires 3-4 servings of vegetables per day and one optional fruit (avocado). The next step adds 1-2 servings of vegetables. Compare this to the food pyramid recommendation of 3-5 servings of veggies and 2-4 servings of fruits, and I'd say we look pretty darn good! We can all do this even better now because we've read the WHOLE book.

Note: the pyramid defines a serving as 1 C leafy vegetables and 1/2 C other vegetables, cooked or raw.

yes, brandy, we see this kind of stuff on tv, we read it in newspapers, we see it constantly on the board. i often find that, when it comes to the board, this kind of misinformation comes from someone who has read the newspapers, watched the tv, chatted with those that don't have clue and have not read the book.
i can remember my first year of being on the board and the phrase READ THE BOOK was use so often. i can also remember quite a few members getting upset and saying things like "read the book read the book, that's all i ever hear".
i think this challenge and the veggie challenge are two that hellp to show what atkins is all about. the veggie challenge definetly shows that veggies are a huge part of our woe. if you're not eating veggies... you're not doing atkins!

anybody going ahead and reading part 5? i've read what would be chapter 29 if they were numbered, Food and Recipes to Help Yu Do Atkins.

i never cleaned out the cabinets or did much of what is suggested. i had someone in the household not doing atkins and quite franklly, i was determined and ready to lose weight that the chips, cookies and candy were not going to stand in my way. those things were never a problem to me. me being READY and COMMITTED was the key.

i find the carb gram counter that is my book not to be so useful. it's not complete enough for me, never was. i printed off the nutritional spreadsheet and the carb counter offered on the board. the carb counter spreadsheet i had, got so used i had to print it again. it laid on my counter continueosuly during my first months of low carbing.

Jimmie, where are the nutritional spread sheet and carb counter located?

I have leafed thru the recipes several times, and frankly, they don't appeal to me much. Maybe Manhattan tastes are different. I tried the Cream of Spinach soup using broccoli instead. It had a very nice, "decadent" texture, but kind of a funny taste. I'm going to try it again, but not add the Thick 'n Thin until the end.

I don't find the DANDR carb counter complete enough either, and usually go with fitday or the USDA nutrition database. As for the recipes... hmmmm, not many of them appeal to me. Long live Linda for LC recipes. However... gonna give the DANDR recipes a read through again next week, just in case.

Thanks for the link to the spreadsheet, Jimmie. My point about the veggies and the food pyramid is that we need to challenge the mis-information when we see it. I have thought about writing a letter to the editor when I have seen these types of articles, but I didn't take the time to research the specific numbers. Now I have, and you can bet the next time I see/hear a media piece about how Atkins is deficient in veggies and fruit, I WILL RESPOND!!

I finished the book and homework last night, but am too out of it today to do much.

The new drug the doc put me on yesterday is kicking my butt. I was on it a few years ago, and had to come off of it because I could not function. It stopped the tremors and spasms, but I'm walking like a drunk! My brain is only hitting on about two cylinders out of eight.

I am much better today, and am pretty sure I won't have to go to the hospital for that blood patch.

I might use a couple of the recipes to make food for a diabetic friend of mine. Otherwise, they are not to my tastes. I love Linda's site, and I have created a bunch of recipes myself.

                              Sunny!

Been too busy to check in much lately--between kids, work and trying to do something about Christmas, it's been wild.

Will catch up on discussion later, but wanted to say I've finished Chapter 4 and the homework.
