i'm so glad to see you post, jim! new people in new challenges is always a treat!
    let's read through your answers....................

I think I am here mainly because I have doubts I can maintain my own individual will power to stay on the WOL for the rest of my life. I tried to think of any other long term committment I have been able to keep...by myself...and cannot think of any. We all need the support of our peers to succeed. As Al Gore says, "if you want to go fast...go alone. If you want to go far, go with others"

i sincerely hope that adbb provides you with the support you need for the long term.

    · Why are you doing Atkins?
Because I did it once before and it worked very well. I just quit the first time. This time I am not going to be a quitter

    · What does the word “commitment” mean to you?
It's a contract I have in my own mind and soul to accomplish a goal

well, said. i like that i see many combining heart, mind and soul to this whole journey.

    3. Find a quote concerning commitment and share it in this thread.
"The achievement of your goal is assured the moment you commit yourself to it. "
    (Mack Johnson)

ain't that the truth! when truely and faithfully committed, you will succeed!

    4. Comment on the following quote:
“Commitment is what transforms the promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions and the actions which speak louder than
words. It is making the time when there is none. It means coming through time after time, year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism”

Its a great quote, better than the one I selected!

there are good words out there all over the place. your's was just fine!

    5. Make a list of synonyms for the word “commitment“. Put this list in your journal.
pledge, promise, vow, contract, charge, responsibility
    your list is excellent, too!
you did a fine job, mr viking jim!

            1. Copy/paste the Challengers Commitment into your Journal either in Journal Chats or Journal Stats or write it into your personal journal. Yah whatever....hahaha...just kidding. I wrote it down at home.

            2. Copy and paste the following questions in this thread and then answer. You may also place this in your journal but it is not a requirement.

            · Why are you here at the ADBB? Because this is where I get all my questions answered, and it's where I can give some others answers and support too. It's a positive place in a big, nasty, negative net.

            · Why are you doing Atkins? weight loss, healthful way of eating, would like to see if I can lower my cholesterol..

            · What does the word “commitment” mean to you? Strength, fortitude, honesty, hard, hard work.
            3. Find a quote concerning commitment and share it in this thread.

The irony of commitment is that it's deeply liberating -- in work, in play, in love. (part of a quote from The Way I See It #76, Starbucks Coffee)

            4. Comment on the following quote:
“Commitment is what transforms the promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions and the actions which speak louder than

I wish I had said that! This is exactly what commitment means to me. Especially where it says, "It is making time when there is none." . That's it in a nutshell.

            5. Make a list of synonyms for the word “commitment“. Put this list in your journal.
honor, guarantee, pledge, faith, word. (meaning, "my word"). I'll put the list in my stats journal.
Ok, that was pretty painless. I think I'm going to like this challenge!!

                I’m Committed! Oh, Really?
                Homework/Board Work
                1. Copy/paste the Challengers Commitment into your Journal either in Journal Chats or Journal Stats or write it into your personal journal.

Since I don't have a journal on here I have placed the Challengers Commitment in the notebook where I am tracking my weights and measurements

                2. Copy and paste the following questions in this thread and then answer. You may also place this in your journal but it is not a requirement.

                · Why are you here at the ADBB?

I found this board quite by accident and became really interested in it about a month before I started posting. It is a great source of information, support and inspiration.

                · Why are you doing Atkins?

The simple answer (I guess) is because I have to lose weight in order to be healthy and happy in my life. I like it because it involves a permanent change in the way I will think about food in the future which I know is the key to experiencing and sustaining weight loss.

On a more personal level, I just looked again at the pictures in my bathing suit that my husband took of me the day I started induction.
I do not want to be the woman in the pictures and I know adopting this WOE will help me not be this woman.

                · What does the word “commitment” mean to you?

It is a non-negotiable promise that I make to myself or to someone else that I will do whatever is needed and whatever it takes to fulfill the promise.

                3. Find a quote concerning commitment and share it in this thread.

“Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the "right stuff" to turn our dreams into reality.”

I like this quote because it tells me that since I have made this commitment to myself I can utilize such a wealth of information (including this board )to creatively find ways to make this WOE work for ME which might be different than what someone else might need to do. The reality is that once I lose the weight and maintain this WOE (which I am TOTALLY COMMITTED TO DOING) my body and spirit will be free of this burden I carry around with me all the time.

This quote is so empowering because it reinforces to me that I HAVE THE POWER to do this--my weight is within my control and I am committed to staying the course, believing that I will succeed and knowing that I can improve my physical and spiritual health my committing to this WOE.

                5. Make a list of synonyms for the word “commitment“. Put this list in your journal.

                          · Why are you here at the ADBB? I am here at ADBB to get, as well as give, emotional support as I make this long-awaited, improved health-seeking journey.

                          · Why are you doing Atkins? I am doing Atkins to lose weight, to improve my overall wellbeing - decrease the pressure of the arthritis in my spine, and to get out of the obese category (on the BMI chart).

                          · What does the word “commitment” mean to you? The word "commitment" means (to me) making a promise (give your word) to follow through with something (until it's completed).

                          3. Find a quote concerning commitment and share it in this thread.

                          I am only one,
                          But still I am one.
                          I cannot do everything,
But still I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do
The something that I can do.

                          -Edward Everett Hale

I will be committed to making positive changes within myself by restructuring the way that I eat and the foods that I eat. The reality will be a healthy weight and improved health. By committing to this challenge I have boldly let everyone know that I am willing to do what it takes to achieve my goals. Preparation and planning (cooking food the night before, keeping healthy snacks on hand, taking my lunch and snacks to work) have helped me to achieve my goals thus far. By sticking to plan I have lost 1/3 of the weight I need to reach goal. I WILL lose the other 69 pounds by staying committed.

                          5. Make a list of synonyms for the word “commitment“. Put this list in your journal.

a journal is not necesary at all really. if you don't have one all you need to do is write it down and put it with your book or tape it to you monitor. whatever.

i certainly don't want to force anyone into starting a journal. like i said, some have the time, some don't. the point is to have it available to reinforce your commitments, whatever they may be.

i will answer to the posts made while i was out tonight. in the mean time, here is assigment number 2, due any time on tuesday.

                              1. These are to be posted in this thread. Copy and paste the questions then answer.
                              • Reference a time when you were completely committed to a project, cause or life event. Relate to the group what struggles you had and what you did to stay the course. How did you feel when you met the obligation?
                              • Have you ever over committed? How did this affect your challenges, woe, etc.
Virtually everyone has a problem now and then with slow losses, no losses or even gains. We are human. Dr. Atkins knew this but he also used the word “occasionally” in reference to eating off plan, many times in the DANDR. “Occasionally” should never be confused with every other day or be the scapegoat come Friday. Keeping this in mind, answer this question (as it applies):

                              1. If you are committed, why do you find yourself continually battling cravings, falling off the wagon, giving in and giving up?

do you feel a sense of pride that you "boldy" told everyone simply by your actions that you are committed to making this woe work for you? i like how you phrased that.
