    8. Nitrates.... why did Dr. Atkins prefer us to use nitrate free bacon, ham, etc.?

    Nitrates are carcinogens. While I like bacon I don't eat it as often as I would like because I find it too salty. I do eat deli ham but only because it is one of the meats available at my place of employment for breaks there, the other meat is deli turkey. I try to bring my own meat if I have any leftovers.


    9. Are there any other points or comments you would like to discuss concerning Induction?

    Since starting again I have found my cravings for carbs have dropped considerably and find working in a donut shop no problem. I have discovered I feel better and sleep better with more enegy during the day.

        terry and glenda, i love how your lunches seem to be the larger meal rather than making the last meal the larger. i prefer to eat that way but it rarely happens.

          I really like making a big quiche & having it ready for the week. I am not a morning person although I'm finding the older I get the easier mornings get. Of course I then fall asleep by 9pm!!

            hmmm, now that you mention it... I would rather the carbs were more evened out. Some of the cherry tomatoes can go towards supper.

              good sunday morning challenger and good first day of week two of this challenge! this week is much easier, i promise.

              starting today we are dealing with OWL. we won't hit all points, we probably won't get too in depth but we'll do our best to hit some of the things that maybe trip you, me, everybody up.

              today's assignment is to read chapter 14, ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS ~ THE SECOND PHASE OF ATKINS
              i have to laugh.... some would say " you mean there's a second phase to Atkins?" lol lol
              WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED READING CHAPTER 14, POST YOUR ASSIGNMENT DONE OR FINISHED.

              it's not a terribly long chapter but i'm giving you the day to read it.

                  Just finished Chapter 14. But something has always confused me about the way he states his carbs. In the chapter, he said increase the carbs by 5 carbs. Are these total carbs or net carbs? And just what are we counting? For instance (now that the topic is in question), for induction, are we trying to eat only 20 total carbs or 20 net carbs?

                  I've never been able to figure out if he's using "carbs" interchangably after explaining what net carbs are.

                        Read it.
                        It is probably the chapter I have read most times. I agree with others it is a confusing chapter in many ways. It does not provide many answers and OWL is fairly hard because now you have to really count and make your own decisions.

                          O.k. I'm really late, but I hope that I'm not out.

                          Assigment week one continued:
                          3. Read chapter 10 and answer the following question. In relationship to doing Atkins, when are you suppose to start exercising ?
                          The book says you can start exercising as soon as you start induction, but that some people might not want to implement exercise until after the first two days on Atkins because in that 48 hour period, you may feel tired and a bit off kilter as your body makes its conversion from burning glucose to burning fat as its primary fuel.

                          4. Not actually stated but referrenced in chapter 10, what are the 3 particular points of the Atkins Triad aka: the "three legged stool"? Which of these 3 key points gives you the most 'problem' and why?
                          This is actually in my chapter 11.
                          Atkins Nutritional Approach, Vitanutrients and exercise. The Vitanutrients give me the problems because I can't afford the vits right now, and I am really big on vitamins. I really believe the vits would help me out.


                          5. Concerning "Convenience Foods", particularly the Atkins bars and shakes, what does the book say. What has been the experience for most ADBB members concerning "convenience foods"?
                          Atkins says that although it is important to eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can't take time for a meal or need a quick snack. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, do not overdo it.

                          6. Concerning chapter 10, is there anything you are unclear of and need/want to discuss or any point you would like to make a statement about? Nope.

                          7. Read chapter 11. Post a sample INDUCTION menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner using the ACCEPTABLE FOODS and provide the carb count. Do not use the sample in the the book and be as specific as you can. For example, state 1/2 cups, whole cups, ounces, etc. These can be actual menus that you have used or made up menus. Counting all the carbs or just net carbs, either way works for this assignment.

                          Breakfast:

                          Three scrambled eggs
                          two pieces of nitrate free bacon
                          2 tbsp of shredded cheese
                          1 cup of mushrooms
                          total carb: 4.2


                          Lunch:
                          Hamburger Patty
                          1 cup of salad (italian blend)
                          1 tbsp of ranch dressing
                          Total Carbs: 2.4

                          Dinner:
                          1 cup of brocolli with butter
                          8oz of filet mignon
                          Total Carbs: 2.4 carbs

                          Total carbs: 9 net carbs

                          The bacon with nitrates are carcinogenic.

                          Hmm the only thing I think is on some days of induction how are you going to get close to the 20 net carbs without eating more than 3 cups of veggies?

                          I just finished. Whew. I hope I have enough free time to do the assignments next week. Its not fun trying to read and post in such a short time frame.

                            Lunch - 2 cups romaine lettuce 1.1 net carb
                            -2 tablespoons olive oil
                            Dinner - 12 oz ribeye steak
                            - 1 cup broccoli - 5.4 net carbs
                            - 1 oz fontina cheese - 1 carb

                            8. Nitrates.... why did Dr. Atkins prefer us to use nitrate free bacon, ham, etc.?

                            The good doctor mentioned they were considered known carcinogens.

                                ya'll are swifter than me. i didn't read anything yesterday but promise to have it done after work today.

                                i like seeing the questions and i'll do my best to answer them this afternoon when i have more time. let me say this though, if you are counting all carbs during induction, keep that process going in OWL. if you have counted net carbs only, keep that process going. adding 5 carbs, for me, would mean net carbs, since that is what i have always done, this time around. .
