Re: 7th Semi Annual Veggie Challenge

I was just wondering... do many of you grow any of your own vegetables? I have always lived on lots that were very shady, and therefore not very conducive to growing veggies. Last year we moved to a new house, and for the first time, we have a sunny backyard! Woot!

I know that one veggie that I have a hard time finding a lot of the time is - believe it or not - cucumbers. They always feel spongy... gross. Seems like those would be easy to grow.

So how about it - what do you think are the easiest things to grow? What do you have the most luck with? What are the hardest things to grow? I live in southeast Louisiana... it gets very hot and humid here.

            Here is the deal:

Since you are in OWL, your minimum daily net veggie carbs should be 17. Also, you are to try a new veggie that you have never eaten before. Or, if you would rather, you can come up with a new way to have one that you have tried.

All reporting and discussing is done in this thread, so this is the only place you need to visit.

            Good luck, everyone!

we don't grow our own. dh wanted to put in a garden at the new place this spring but i would be the one doing all the work and i wasn't willing to go there. also, we have the turkeys, deer and at least one groundhog running through the yard so i think the garden idea would be good for them, not so much for me.
i do however, try to can some tomatoes and make some tomato juice every fall. i buy the produce from the local amish folks. buying from them is cheaper in the long run than growing our own.
i MIGHT get a couple plants and put them in planters on the deck. that's a thought that hasn't come to pass yet.

Re: 7th Semi Annual Veggie Challenge

                A little reminder for everyone:

I leave it up to the challenger on how they want to get in their veggies. Meaning, I am just concerned with the number of net veggie carbs consumed daily. To successfully complete the challenge, all that you are required to report each day are net veggie carbs... you are not required to say how you got them, and I don't monitor how many cups it takes you to do it. I want daily numbers, and the challenger must either (1) try a veggie they have never had, or (2) try a new recipe for a veggie that you have had. That means 1 for the week - not everyday. (although, that would be cool!)

Having said that ~ although it is not required, most people do include details on how they get them in each day. For the five days of this challenge, I use my Fitday for veggies only. That way, I have exact numbers... I love numbers. So I will be providing all of my details, and look forward to seeing how other people do it, too.

LOL - yes, you're probably right! I'm worried enough about birds and squirrels; can't imagine fighting the turkeys, deer, and goundhogs!

One of my friends has great success with "patio" tomatoes in containers. And my brother has fashioned his own "topsy-turvy" which works really well.

Ok, fellow Challengers ~ Monday is my long day at work... which means that from now until about 6:00 this evening, I will be "out of pocket". No internet access.

That doesn't mean that you can't come here to discuss/ask questions/trade recipes. In the case of questions, I am more than sure that there will be someone here who can help you out pretty quickly.

Have fun with it, and have a successful veggie day!

I tried a new veg today. I had turnip chips deep fried, very nice with mayo, salad and steak. Delicious!

I got 18 net carbs from veggies today. I bought some bok choy for a new veggie but am saving it for tomorrow.

We have always had a big garden with everything in it. I do a lot of canning. I think the easiest thing for us to grow is summer squash. Last year we only planted 3 plants and still had more than we could ever use but I love it so I don't mind. My favorite recipe for it is to simmer it in butter along with tomatoes and onions for 20 minutes. It's a great side dish!
