Re: If you have a dog?

MOG - I am curious about the insurance you have for your dog. Is it expensive? What type of things does it cover? Hopefully this isn't toomany questions but I have always joked that "you can have your kids on your insurance, why not your dogs" I don't have any children so my dogs are my children.

I was also concerned about the Greenies because of the news reports. My vet told us that there are far more dogs who eat Greenies with no problems than dogs who choke on them. He advised us that as long as we give Pedro the appropriate sized greenie for his size, we wouldn't have a problem. He compared it to driving. Lots of people get into car accidents, but it doesn't stop the majority of us from driving, or riding in cars.

The vet also told us, no rawhides, because they could splinter in Pedro's stomach.

Our Marmie cat (see post here http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=25748) occasionally gets the 'hairball cough' and I find a bit of cream on a saucer clears him up for a few days. Our Fan Fan cat goes out of her way to kack on the carpet, too, and she prefers the dining room one, it is cream coloured!

If your dog will let you brush his teeth, then they probably don't need professional cleaning. But I had a dog who would sooner bite your arm off than have her teeth brushed, and she ended up having to have a rotten tooth pulled under anesthesia.

Hey Heidi........ we feed the "kids" Wellness also! I was amazed as due to the fact they are both white, the female was having awful staining from her tear ducts. Not umcommon with white dogs. Someone suggested the "wellness". We did some investigating and made the switch. Within a few weeks her eyes cleared up. I think that stuff is the best.

Its technically called a "Wellness Plan" it covers the cost of all office visits, an annual comprehensive exam, and all shots. It costs about 15 dollars a month. Its offered thru the vet. I love it because when I have to take her for her shots and check up I don't have to come up with any cash. If she has to have anything done other than the routine stuff it gives you a 10% discount. I just upgraded it though so that it will cover all bloodwork and anestesia (I don't know how to spell that LOL) and give me 15% off everything so its like 23.00 a month, but I only have to commit to 1 year at that price and it will save me a ton of money when I have her fixed next month.

They have lots of different plans that cover more things but I don't know if they're worth it unless something really bad happens. Since Gizzie is an indoor dog and only goes out with us and on a leash I hopefully don't need anything more.

I'm the same as you, we don't have any kids so Giz is our child!

Re: If you have a dog?

Thanks for the info MOG! My babies are due for their annual checkup next month. I will inquire with my vet about the insurance just to see if it is worth while. At the moment - knock on wood - I only have had to bring them in for routine visits and minor things. They are older in age now so you never know what they will need in the future. Better to be safe than sorry. When I bring them in for their shots and so forth, it usually costs me well over $300. They're worth it though! Thanks again .

Re: If you have a dog?

Plastic kongs with treats inside are a great alternative if your baby loves to chew!
My dog's Kong was one of my best investments..though it amazes me they can charge so much for a hunk of rubber! I paid almost $20 for it! though it's almost indestructable. My other best investment was a stuffed dog toy named Dirty Rotten Kitty, I bought at Petsmart, He's had it since he was a pup, and it's still in fairly good shape, the rest of his toys barely last a week! Though I had to repair Kitty after he got his ear chewed off LOL. He brings it into his cage at night and sleeps with it.

The fact that the routine shots are covered 100% is what sold me on it! I figured out what I was saving on that alone and it made the monthly cost well worth it!
