    Re: Coconut Oil

You're right Lyssie, I forgot that, but it does have that consistency, lard like. Could it be put on veggies in place of butter perhaps?

try mixing it with cocoa and splenda, a dash of vanilla and spreading the concoction on a buttered plate and freezing it. Break off a piece and you have a sort of chocolate bark.

        Re: Coconut Oil

It did make my lips feel feel nice and moisturized when trying to sip some of the coffee ... LMAO! ... Which gave me the idea... today after my workout, I showered and applied the coconut oil to my face....it felt really nice! I have really dry skin and it is ultra sensitive. I can get dermatitis quite easily ... so you know I am careful what I put on my face. I have to say it seems to be a great natural mosturizer!

I did manage to scrap some out on the spoon and taste it. The flakes tend to dissolve quickly as if they were never there.

I wouldn't give up my olive oil though. It is so good for the heart.

Oh Momtomany what a great recipe! I am going to try that for sure!

Mickkey, you can put it anywhere you normally put butter or olive oil. I understand when warmed it is a good spread.

I mix coconut oil, glycerin, beeswax with just a touch of baby oil for hand cream, apply at night with gloves, especially on the days I work the floral dept. and my hands are well most of the day. It smells wonderful and the softening stays with you.

            Re: Coconut Oil

This is an excerpt from an excellent ebook that I'm currently reading- Weight Loss Cover-Up Exposed, by Astrid Lasco- on coconut oil. Hope she doesn't mind me quoting her here.

            "
It is not true that coconut oil causes heart disease. In contrary:when coconut oil was fed as 7% of energy to patients recovering from heart attacks, the patients had greater improvement compared to untreated controls, and no difference compared to patents treated with corn or safflower oils. Highly saturated tropical oils have been nourishing healthy populations for millennia. [84]
So how did coconut oil get a negative reputation? The problems for coconut oil started four decades ago when researchers fed animals hydrogenated coconut oil that was purposefully altered to make it completely devoid of any essential fatty acids. The hydrogenated coconut oil was selected instead of hydrogenated cottonseed, corn or soybean oil because it was a soft enough fat for blending into diets due to the presence of the lower melting medium chain saturated fatty acids. The same functionality could not be obtained from the cottonseed, corn or soybean oils if they were made totally saturated, since all their fatty acids were long chain and high melting and could not be easily blended nor were they as readily digestible.
The animals fed the hydrogenated coconut oil (as the only fat source) naturally became essential fatty acid deficient; their serum cholesterol levels increased. Diets that cause an essential fatty acid deficiency always produce an increase in serum cholesterol levels as well as an increase in the atheroscerosis indices. The same effect has also been seen when other essential fatty acid deficient, highly hydrogenated oils such as cottonseed, soybean, or corn oils have been fed; so it is clearly a function of the hydrogenated product, either because the oil is essential fatty acid (EFA) deficient or because of trans fatty acids.
Sally Fallon, author of Nourishing Tradition, [85] offers evidence that tropical oils such as palm kernel and coconut are actually a healthier option to canola and believes that the bad rap they have received is a result of intense lobbying by the vegetable oil industry, particularlythe American Soybean Association (ASA), the Corn Products Company (CPC International) and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), aided by the FDA.
Although they contain plenty of saturated fat, over two-thirds of these are in the form of short- and medium-chain fatty acids (often called "medium-chain triglycerides"). She observes that, as one-third of the world's nations in tropical areas have switched to polyunsaturated vegetable oils, the incidence of intestinal disorders and immune deficiency diseases has increased dramatically.

Bruce Fife, N.D., the author of the book Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil, completely convinced of powerful properties of coconut oil as a weight loss promoter, proposes “The Coconut Diet”, a diet that you would like, that you could stay on permanently and still enjoy most of your favorite foods without worrying about counting calories or weighing food. The diet is simple and it doesn’t require any drastic changes in the way you prepare or eat your food. Just replace all the refined vegetable oils you use in your kitchen with coconut oil and try to incorporate fresh and dried coconut and coconut milk into as many meals as possible. When combined with a high-fiber diet, coconut oil and coconut products can have a remarkable effect on your weight and your health.[86]"

Just keep in mind....at some point in your life...you've probably had much worse things in your mouth!! If you can low carb, you can shovel in some fatty fatty fat fat.

                          Re: Coconut Oil

I want to love coconut oil, and I've been trying to love it for years. I think it's hopeless. I have only tried the Extra Virgin, because that's supposed to have the most health benefits. I love coconut, so you'd think that coconut oil would be easy for me. I don't like cooking with it. I hate the way it makes eggs taste. I don't like eating it off a spoon. I tried it this morning in my coffee with cream. Not good. Maybe I'll come up with something.

                            Re: Coconut Oil

ok I broke down today and while I was out getting supplies I stopped and bought some coconut oil....at first I stuck my finger in and licked it...I didn't gag, so I tried it again...no gagging again, so I got a spoon. I put some on the back of the spoon and got it down ... 3 times but that's all I could do.

Later I put some in my coffee (w/cream & splenda) that was ok but I'll have to get use to the oil slick on top of the cup...it looked like when I add liquid oil to a pot of boiling water..LOL.

I swear I felt like I had Angelina Jolie lips....they felt so big from the coconut oil on them... I'll keep trying to get more in me everyday.

Just be careful! Remember, it is oil and will transfer itself to whatever you touch....clothing, your sheets, etc. I found out the hard way. I have used it on my neck to tighten it up and moisturize the skin that's not stretched out anymore due to the absence of that double chin! When I use it on my hands, I put on a pair of gloves.
