  • Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

I did some heavy duty weeding over the weekend (whoever said gardening wasn't a good form of exercise, never weeded a garden before!!!!)

Anyhoo, my boss told me this hint. If you want to grow a vegetable in a container and your funds are such that you can't afford a container, buy a small bag of potting soil or garden soil, sit it up on the ground and smush it around so it stands up by itself, poke a few small holes in the bottom (for drainage), open the top fold it down a bit, then plant whatever you want. Granted these containers won't make the cover of "Better Homes and Gardens" but it will allow anyone to grow veggies or flowers somewhat inexpensively.

Megs, there's a greenhouse I visited once in NC that used hefty garbage bags full of maure & peat to grow tomatoes. Those tomato plants were enormous, with 2 & 3 pound tomatoes all the way to the roof about 18' high. And there was no weeding required, just suspended knotted rope to which the vines were tied.

Containers are never hard to find, though, as they get tossed or sold at yard sales here on a regular basis. I personally like to use old teapots & kettles that are otherwise defunct.

hmm, I think my mom has some seed from the bright red poppies. She confirmed today while checking out my garden that it is columbine. I have lots of it, all that color though.

Raining again. My veggies looked good tonight. Still no cukes I am worried, pumpkins are way ahead of progress. green beans are not nearly as full as the yellow. Man, I am going to be bumming if my cukes dont grow. Last year, at other residence I was picking 50 per day.

A member sent me some seeds this year and bulbs too. We have 4 black heirloom tomato plants growing from her. For flowers she sent Sweet Peas seeds and Dahlia bulbs! She sent me some sunflowers too but they never came up.
