Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

Hi HB !! In reviewing the rules, I curious about this part....

~~It is adviseable to record your foods in a place like Fitday or dailyplate or another tracking program. You will be required to find your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and eat at least that number of calories + whatever your activity level dictates. For example. I will be eating 1737 calories (my BMR) + 200 calories (for lifestyle). This is about 1950 calories a day roughly that I should be eating. You can figure out your BMR at this link.
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ You should also aim for a ratio of foods at 65% fat, 5% carbs, 30% protein.~~~

I understand we don't want to starve, but to eat at a maintanance level? I'm having a real hard time eating 2/3's of my BMR, I'm stuffed. Please help me clarify.

            Thanks

Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

Hi Everyone! First of all welcome to Kntrylady,Emma, tryingagain, and scarpetta.

Ok, lets clear up some business first! LOL (all work and no play... LOL)

The reason for finding your BMR. First of all your BMR is the minimum required amount of calories your body needs just to survive and not go into starvation mode. AT first you will lose weight eating less than your BMR, but after about 3 weeks it will start to back fire on you and you will end up losing weight more slowly than you would burn if you were eating at your BMR. You also need to give your body a bit of calories above your BMR to avoid starvation mode. The amount above your BMR is up to you and your activity level, I chose 200 calories. That doesn't mean you need to eat that much extra, but this is about the equivelant of an extra snack in a day to fuel your body for all of the extra exercise you will be doing. I know how hard it is to eat enough. Most people aren't fat because they eat too much it is actually the oposite in most cases. I have a VERY hard time eating 2100-2200 calories in a day. But I try, and I have lost 52 lbs in 3 months, and 2 weeks. That is a lot of weight so it must be workin! LOL I usually end up hitting about 1900 calories. But to each his own.

Dr. Atkins said don't count calories but calories do count. You need to eat enough. However that being said. DO NOT STUFF yourself. Plan your meals to be calorie dense meals. If you need to do some planning for this it is worth it. Go to Linda's low carb site and look up some new foods to add to your diet that are higher in carbs. Like your side dishes for example, cauliflower is great for low carb, but adding some bacon, sour cream, philly cream cheese and grated marble cheddar to it makes it soooooo tastey and higher in calories and fat. This will help you meet those calorie requirements. Just try to see if you can add more calories and whatever you come up with will be just fine! It took a LOT of convincing from some very succesful people around here to get me out of induction and to eat that many calories, but the truth of the matter is it broke a stall when I started eating more, and when I moved to OWL.

Alright, about the not weighing thing. This is ofcourse a key component to this challenge because it stops us from stressing out over a number. It takes a strong will power to decide that atkins works, even if you don't have a scale to fall back on. You will know for sure that you are losing weight by these three things.

              1) you are measuring yourself once a week every week and seeing a change in inches. Which is more important than pounds when you are exercising because you are adding muscle which weighs more than fat and takes up less room than fat! yeah!

              2) if you pee on your ketostixs you will be peeing at least pink! This will depend on how many carbs you eat. Anything less than 40-50 carbs a day will register on a ketostix. And if you are recording your foods in fitday, then you know you are eating less carbs than that.

              3) your clothes are fitting better and your special people in your life are noticing a change!

These are all things that tel us we are on the right track. And no one loves their scale more than me! LOL But the scale was getting to be counter productive. It ruled my emotions too much. However this may not be a problem for you so again, to each his own. But it is a rule of the challenge so no weighin after May 1st......Ok?

I am loving all of the interest in the challenge! it is awesome! I hope I didn't kill yahs all off of this with this really long post about BMR's and scales, but I think it is important to do this as is. It will make yahs all fall off that scale with complete amazement and happiness when you measure and weigh at the end and see that the science of Atkins works. you just have to trust it. Besides you have no control over what the scale says at any given time considering it's water fluctuations and the like, but you do have control over your plan. So work it baby..... let me see you go for it full force ok! WOO HOO!

I am going to be back a bit later if anyone needs anything. And feel free to ask some second opinions if you like. May I suggest asking Julirama, and Valid rouge, or Adena, or Lyssie, these are the folks who really helped me past my plateau.

              TTYL!

Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

Hi EVeryone! I hope you are all having a great day! Keeping the plan in mind and looking for ways to get it all in gear! I had a good day today.

My plan has been to get a bit of will power going as well. Today we went to McDonalds. *I can't seem to make people choose other places to eat lately! Goodness, isn't anyone concerned about healthy eating?* So I brought some stuff with me, because I kind of expected this to happen. I brought some jerly, and an apple with some natural penut bitter in a little tupperware cup. A bag of chopped red pepper and a small salad. I also had a small baggie of almonds (all natural unroasted and unsalted. mmmmmmm) I didn't nearly eat all I brought with me but my options were plentiful and filling and enjoyabe. And all of the people at the table started to read the nutritional info on their food boxes and asked me what I thought. And I gotta say with like 40 carbs for one quarter pounder, *I'd* rather eat my 17 carb apple! Which I didn't finish BTW. Anyways, I had not even one fry, although they were tempting. Not really tempting, but just the smell. I did well. I stuck to my plan. And I prepared in advance.

As far as exercise is concerned I am going to really put the heat on to get dh to buy some exercise equipment. I think I would enjoy the option of doing something while the laundry is going and my son is sleeping that is a bit different than my current routine. Like maybe a bowflex. I got the cardio down, but could up my weight resistance training.

Oh well, I hope all is well with all of yahs. Don't be afraid BTW from reading the above post. I am not a challenge hitler. Just want the best for ya'll and really think you guys will be so proud if you do the challenge the way I did it. IMHO anyways.

Thanks sue! I hate ronnies on the best of days, but it is tempting because it has been a habit in the past yah know? Just kind of pop it in your mouth and fill the hole kind of food. This however was a lesson learned from a bad cheat last week.

Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

Wooow! I am going to do this! I am really nervous. I weigh my self everyday so it will be very hard for me to do this I am addicted to weighing myself. BUT, I will do it and I will just have to look forward to measuring myself every week and seeing those numbers go down. I have so much to learn about this WOE.

                      I will commit to:
                      Exercize: 45 min 5 days a week
                      Recording in Fitday
100 oz of water a day
                      Vitamins every day
Measure Once a week and NO weighing
will try for 2000 calories a day.

I will post my measurments and picture later.

                      Good luck everyone!

Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

KG! That is awesome! I am so proud of you for going for it full gusto! It was a hard challenge for me when I did it, and it is still hard for me at times. This time around I may actually hit onderland while doing the challenge and not even know it. But I am willing to give that up and wait until June 15th to see with the rest of ya'll. You won't regret it!

So did you have to really psych yourself up to decide to commit to this challenge? Well, if you did we are all with you and will not weigh ourselves either! *says this recovering scaleaholic!*

Ok ladies, I have something that I want to ask and I am willing to go with what you guys think. This means that I may give up beating Brady's butt in the 6WEC challenge, but I am supposed to weigh in at the end of the 6WEC#34 challenge. I have committed to doing it, and I have also committed to not weighing as a part of this challenge which starts before the 6WEC is finished, if only a few days into the AA challenge. SO I want to know if anoyone has a problem amending the original no weigh rule to only permitted if you are getting a finishing weight for a previously comitted challenge? *as a husband or someone else can take a starting weight without you having to post it until the end of most chalenges but that is kind of hard if it is a finishing weight* As I said, if I get back 3 or more responses that you think it would be unfair of me to ask you to not weigh and then go and do it myself, then I will forfit the other challenge and stick with this one. My fate lies in your hands! Muah ah ah ahhhhh be gentle with me......<3

How do we make oursleves eat "enough"? I was doing good while I was off work but now that I'm back its hard. I ate breakfast yesterday and then worked right through lunch. I was definetly worn down by the time I got home at 630. I'm a stylist and honestly don't have time to take a lunch. I did bring (don't laugh) some ball parks with me today. Thats a quick microwave and can eat that quick. But thats always been my problem, not overeating...undereating!

I agree. I think its important for you to fulfill your commitment to the other challenge as well. I also need to work on getting in enough calories every day! This challenge is going to be just that for me--A Challenge!! I am addicted to my scale totally! which is AWFUL and I have managed to cut myself to only weighing in the morning BUT I am having my fiance hide it from me on April 30th and keep it away until the end of this challenge!!!

                                My commitments for AA are:
Eat AT LEAST my BMR calories
                                Continue to record in Fitday
                                Continue to measure every Tuesday
Drink at least 80 oz of water daily
                                Finish my C25K program
Add 2 more days of exercise to my week to make 5/week
                                NO WEIGHING!!!!
