Hi all -- I posted an introduction ("Greetings from California from a 'marathoner'") over in the Introduction forum... I talk a bit about my background and how I came to be able to finish a marathon. I'm in training for another one (The Walt Disney World Marathon on January 11 next year).

I've been on Induction for the past two months, and I've started OWL recently having lost 14 pounds. I'm going to have to up the intake on carbs on those days I do my very long training runs, now that it's only 74 days away from the marathon (for example, this weekend I have to "woggle" [waddle-jog] 10 miles). I don't care if the Atkins Web site says "fat-loading" is better than "carbo-loading," but I need to take electrolyte drinks with carbs so I don't totally bonk out. [Of course I'll still stay away from the traditional no-no foods]

I'm sooooo happy to see this thread! It really cheers me up that everyone is trying to stick with it. It takes at least three weeks to develop a habit, and community support is all the better to help in exercise efforts!

If you are interested in keeping track of your mileage, I strongly recommend Running-Log.com. It has wonderful features -- and you can see at a glance how well you've done in a month. They have a setting so you can make your log public, so you can share your progress with friends, too.

I am NOT NOT NOT a fast "runner" at all -- I espouse the philosophy of John "The Penguin" Bingham from Runner's World magazine, who writes a column for and about people who become "adult onself athletes." Heck, there are WALKERS who can speedwalk faster than I can jog! It's just one foot in front of the other, one step at a time.

If you have any questions about jogging or exercise, though (I also go to Spinning classes and lift weights), I'll be happy to help!!

      Lani,

Glad to see someone is on this forum again. I wrote 2 weeks ago and then noticed this has been touched in quite some time. I am a runner too and was worried about my lack of carbs during my runs. I was in a 5 mile race last Sunday in Central Park NY, NY and wasn't sure how I would do. My time ended up as 42:21. However, I must confess, I was in NYC for 2 days before the race and cheated....big time. So, that may have played a part in my time. Unfortunately, I am still in my eating rut. Gotta get back on track. Tomorrow is a new day.

Question: the inside of my right calf is VERY tight as well as the rest of my lower right leg. When I try to run, or even walk fast, the whole thing hurts. I haven't been able to run since my race. Do you know what happened or what to do. I want to do a 6 mile run tomorrow, but it doesn't look promising.

        Hi Chris;

Are you taking multi-vitamins? You want to make sure you're taking potassium in adequate levels (it seems to keep cramps at bay for me).

How are you stretching after your runs? There are a lot of good stretches to do for running, and you want to make sure you stretch out well after you are done. There are stretches specific to your calves and shins as well. It's possible you might have stressed or pulled something in your right calf... have you considered getting a massage on your legs? That might help.

I've been dealing with foot pain over the weekend and I'm really hoping it's just strained tendons... I can deal with that because I can still nurse myself and run. I'm hoping it's not a stress fracture, because then my marathon training is out for 6 weeks, and there goes the marathon I wanna do (I might be able to do the half distance). Ugh.

          Hi everybody,

Here is some runningnews from the otherside of the ocean.
I'm Peter, 35 year old and living in the Netherlands, near to Rotterdam. My weight in july this year was about 100 kilograms, that was more then 20 kilograms to much for a length of 1.82 meter, so I started to follow Atkins. I never did any sport in my life, but because I desperately wanted to loose weight fast, I started sporting a lot.

The first month I used an hometrainer to exercise and cycled 1 hour or more as fast as I could every day. When my weight became near to the 90 kilograms, I carefully started running, very slowly, just as the others explained in the first posts of this threat. My speed was not importand and I just tried to walk as long as possible, 6 days a week.

You won't believe it but after two months exercising I run half a marathon (21,1 kilometers) in less then 2 hours while I still was in ketose and did not eat more then 20 grams carbs a day! This gave me so much courage I decided to try the full marathon of Amsterdam on 21 oktober 2003. Another 6 weeks training later I run the Amsterdam marathon, and ran the full 42,195 meters in 3 hours and 58 minutes, my dream time, less then 4 hours.

This time I was almost on my idealweight (77 kilograms) so I followed fase 4 during the preperation of the marathon. I noticed that when I started eating more carbs again in fase 4 that my speed during running increased a lot. But the months I trained in ketose helped my body to live on a fatburning, which gave me the longtime energy I needed for the marathon.

It was a very special occasion and I got a lot of support of the other Members of the dutch-Atkins-forum. When there are sportsquestions on our atkinsforum i always like to answer them, because lots of them get the same experiences when I started sporting with Atkins. I hope I have the energy, the power and the health to do it on 4-4-4 in the Rotterdam-marathon again, because nothing is more beautifull then the moment you walk over the finsh after so may hours running and wan from yourself the biggest battle you can imagine.

          Greetings PeterPan.

Hi, everyone I am new to the message boards. I run/walk between 45 minutes and 60 minutes 5 times a week. Should I be eating more carbs that adkins says. And on another board I read that the advantage bars are not good, What do you think? I am a bit confused, I have cheeted so the accounts for a little flucuation in the weight and I am in early menopause and my periods are all over the place. I am trying really hard now, so I could use some advise or could you just tell me what you eat on a daily basis to give me something to go by.

            Thank you in advance

The bars are not good if you are on induction. I read in another post that once you are on OWL, it is best to keep it to maybe 2 times a week for the bars and shakes. They said is causes stalling. About eating more carbs to compensate for the extra activity (and I'm no expert) I would say that as long as you are feeling okay with below 20 carbs, you should try to stay there until you decide to leave the induction stage.

Have you read the book? It will give you a more defined set of "rules" to live by, and then you will feel more in control. I'm new to this also, but if I can help you in any way-

recently I did the math on how many miles I have run since I started running in high school
                  start age 20
                  current age 36
weekly routine ( actually an underestimate ) 20 miles
                  x52 weeks in a year =1040 x 16 years =16,640 miles
Holy Toledo! How many times around this planet is that?
all at about 20 lbs overweight!
                  you'd think I'd be a twig. hahahha.

I hate running. With a passion. Which is odd, because I used to be very good at it . In middle and high school I played football and stayed in decent shape. I was always a good runner then, though I never really did it outside of the field. When I hit college I became sedintary and ballooned up a good 25 pounds or so during my beer-binge days. So when I left college at 21, I neededa change. I joined the Army. And there's 3 things the army loves to make you do... run, situps, and pushups. After I very quickly shed my weight, I had my 2 minute mile down to about 13:30. Not bad at all. We were running maybe 3-4 days a week, maybe 3 miles when we ran.

Then I went through AIT and got assigned to my unit. Yikes. I was at Ft. Bragg and was assigned to the Signal Detachment for the 5th Special Forces group. If there's one thing SF guys do, it's run. And run a lot. Suddenly I was doing 5-6 miles a day, every day. My body couldn't take it, and I developed seriously bad stress fractures. So I left the Army, and vowed never to run again

To this day I avoid itlike the plaugue. My favorite excercise is non-impact, like an eliptical or a glider. I will occasionally walk the treadmill, but even that brings back memories of jagged, shooting pain while being screamed at by SF sergeants. So to everyone who likes running, god bless you. You'll find me in the gym!

                        Hi,
all I can say is find what you Love, what's fun, what worksfor you , and god speed!
                        Karen
ps- I think my secret to longevity in running is that I have always kept the miles under 1 hour, been gentle on the knees, and worn really good shoes with the right kind of support for my body's quirks. ( I pronate so I get shoes that have soles to stabalize and balance this tendancy )
I am also 20- lbs overweight, so really good padding and inserts is super important.
I think it also helps that I take my dog running on the most beautiful path through a marsh that is surrounded by dramatic velvety green tropical volcanic mountains and vibrant sunset colors to greet me. Doesnt get any better!

actually what your doing is supposed to be better for you. the run/walk thing. it's called interval training. it's supposed to help you lose weight faster and increase you cardiovascular ability. so don't feel bad that you can run 6 miles yet. i do 3min walk on incline and then run 3min at 0 incline on the treadmill. or i do it on the elliptical. i up the ramp and increase the resistance and than lower the ramp and decrease the resistance. all for about 20-25 min after i'm done weight lifting. keep it up it's great for lifting the butt and losing the thighs. :angel

                              Hello everyone!

Is this still an active thread? I hope so. I've been and runner on and off for a few years now (mostly off obviously ) I'm day 13 on induction, my second try at this. Anyway, I just got back from the gym, feeling pumped, and would like to train for a 5K. I love running, how it makes me feel and look. Anyone else need support? Maybe a long time runner here willing to give advice?

                                Hey Pugs,,
Guess you made it an active thread, huh. I also really like running. Although I was always a more of a sprinter & never really did any kind of distance running. Since allowing my weight to jump over 50 pounds in the last several years, I have really struggled to run for more than 3-5 minutes at a time. Back in January that is what I started with, 3 minutes.
Gradually I have worked it up to 20 minutes, just under 2 miles. :icondance

My short term goal is to before summer, be able to run for three or four miles. :joy
