Right on runners! ITs such a quick and effective way to maintain health. I run 5 a day...but my best advice is to ease into distance,. kind of like OWL, add a little every week, every other day, see how your body takes it. You are less likely to get knee injuries this way as your connective tissue ( tendons and ligaments ) need to ease into the impact and be supported by strong muscle tissue.

      Hi! :wave

I've got a thread further down learning to run, as I started the www.coolrunning.com C25k plan (couch to 5k). It's great for beginners, but they have plans on their to train for a 5k / 10k race etc.

They've a great running forum too.

I've gone from 30 secs running to 5 mins so far, Saturday will see me attemp 8 min!!! :icondance

        Keep going Purple!

When I first started running I couldn't run 1/8 of a mile without huffing and puffing. I got myself up to 2 miles but then was sporadic with my running. Even so I can go back to it, even with a few months off, and run at least 1 mile. My goal is a 5K in May!

Take your time and go slow. I over did it once and paid the price. That experience is always in the back of my mind. It's not worth it!

NewLeaf-Do you run 5 miles a day? I try to run 6 days a week. Some days farther than others just listening to my body. I walk/run a total of 2-2.5 miles.

IH-You are running a 10 minute mile! Way to go!!

It's great to see the thread alive again. Support is a wonderful thing.

yup- 5 miles a day - I have hyper terrier who requires it. Otherwise, no rest for me at home. I actually think terriers are great weight loss programs.

I love pugs.. thanks for the support and tips. I'm as slow as I can be really, not reaching the mileage but aiming for the mins then will work on the miles when I get to the 30 min stage. I have two 5ks lined up, one in July (25th) and one early September. So hope to see an improvement between the two runs, but not aiming for any goal other than to complete the first one! :nod

New leaf.. I have a norfolk terrier, who I've been thinking of taking running with me (once I can run properly) will be good for him to run on a lead as he never does it. does ur dog run nicely on a lead? without tripping u up? hehe

See, I can't go running with Pugs. One mile and they'd be pooped. I think there is a reason why Pugs rhymes with Slugs.... :laughing

I freaked out yesterday as I read my Runner magazine, the first to arrive of my subscription. There was an article on how harmful it was to low-carb and run as you need carbs to build muscle (whitch is true). Then I had to remind myself that most people reading this magazine are marathon runners! I'll worry about carbs when I can run the LA marathon (maybe next year??)

I"m mad at the scale this morning. It hasn't budged in about 4 days. I"m into my thrid week of induction and contemplating OWL.

Well, Purple, New and IH have a great day!

Well, my terrier Gerta was terrible on a leash until I got a Gentle lLeader, which keeps a dog from pulling and choking becuase its attached to her muzzle. Its loose fitting and very humane, if she pulls, she turns herself around! I recommend it for any unruly pups out there. Fortunatley < I run her either on the beach or on a nature trail so she's off the leash mostly. She just lives for the outings, it breaks my heart if I ever cant go.

AND, good luck with the training- 5k is very doable. You are smart to not worry about speed or distance. If you ever want to go faster, I have great techniques for this too.

Pugs, hehe bless ur dogs, I had a friend when I was a child had a pug, v.sweet dog it was too.

There is a lot of anti low carb out in the running forums I visit. I have had to up my carbs to owl as I was finding I was fatigued etc. I guess I just went from nothing to exercise/running 6 days a week though. :icondance

I view it that we can only see how WE feel as we go along, if we need to up the carbs so be it. I for one am not going back to a 'normal' woe though. I have also chatted to people that have run for years and one who is so active u wouldn't believe and is still on 70-100g a day.

Some also pep up runs with gels, or carb loaded stuff (jelly babies, choc, banana's) just before or during a LONG run. I guess this would be ok if you were training for a half M , or marathon. :nod

Well, due to run today.. and have got up to 2 inches of snow on the ground :anger . Not sure whether to wait it out or just 'do it'. Really was looking forward to my run but looks like more snow out there.

I always read that you need protein to build muscle, not carbs. ??

And just wanted to say: i adore pugs!!!
We have one living in the street, he is called Max and barks at any dog, disregarding size (a bit suicidal)
I have three dogs, all mongrels, rather big, but when i am sixty i will have three pugs. They are the sweetest, and also supposed to be very clever and funny.
Which color is your pug ?

Once i saw one that was black with purple eyes (i swear!) I nearly fell over, so beautiful !

                      Guess what....

I ran, 20 mins straight today!! woohoo!

I really felt up for the challenge, and all be it i only covered 1.5 miles as I'm so slow hehe but I'll build on that in time. :joy

                      • i run about 2 miles 5 times a week, sometimes 3 miles. I am a little worried, though, about losing muscle mass. I am into weightlifting, so I don't want to lose muscle.

It's my understanding that on low carbs, your body will break down fat quickly enough to power slow aerobic exercise, but if you overdo it, your body might dip into your muscles for fuel.

                        Any truth to that??

Should I be careful about running too fast while on low carbs?

                        • Hello... I just joined this site and am currently doing BFL exercise program, Atkins eating, and training for a 5K... I am currently in Week 8 of a nine week training sessions...

On Sunday I ran my first 3 mile session... I thought I was dying but it felt good... I have however cuase my back some pain... Right above the tailbone... not sure if I jammed something or what...

Today was supposed to be Week 8, Day 1 but I just walked this morning instead of running... I am going to see how my back feels and will try to run in the morining...

Right now I am going to do my first 5K on May 31st... I am hoping to be able to continue to do at least 3 miles from now until then so I can work on my speed... my frist 3 miles took 35 minutes, 12 seconds... which isn't too bad for my first time... My 1st mile was 10 minutes 2 seconds; however, as you can tell by my finishing time I REALLY slowed down my pace as the time went on... oh well.... practice, practice, practice!!!

                          Nice to meet you all!!

                          • I would like to run but I would rather do it on a treadmil.
How can you prevent running being bad on you knees? And what kind of good shoe suggestion?
I have never been a runner bc Im female and its hurts my chest but Im willing to give it a shot. :yes

                            • Shannon you can run on a treadmill. Get a good salesperson to help you with the shoes, different sorts of feet do better in different types. It is worth the investment in good ones.

I think for the sake of your knees you need to start small. Run for less than a minute at a time. Do sets of walk/run... and definitely you need a good sports bra! I am not large chested at all... but I cannot run without a sports bra. Can't stand having them bob up and down....

If you can join a gym the leg machines will do a lot to strenghten your knees. Mine feel incredible now!
