Bit of both 2big.... speeded things up a little as I was short of time, and left out a couple of the gentler exercises. Still got all the horrors in though, and managed my new quota for the situp challenge....

On track today. All done fine. Now must start searching the net for a ball to buy! Yippee!

    Keep moving everyone!

Ok... just been combing ebay looking at balls...they don't even know what they are in the sports shops here in Umbria (lol).... I see that there are lots of different sizes, which instantly confuses me.... what's the best size? I am 5 ft 4 inches (if height determines the ball circumference you need).

Thanks for any advice on size, quality etc...

      • Re: The Goalie's Challenge Exercise Thread

ball size has 2 criteria are you sitting on it or not as your exercise and secondly your height.

make sure your ball is burst resistant too. can you ebay one from their?

        CHOOSE CORRECT BALL SIZE

Please read all the information carefully before selecting a ball. A few minutes spent reading now might save you the time and money of having to return a wrong-sized ball later.

The general rule for choosing the correct exercise ball size for core exercises is having your knees and hips bent to 90 degrees (thighs parallel to floor) when sitting on the ball. This is the minimum ball size--some people prefer a larger ball, where hips are higher than knees. Don't go by photos of models sitting on balls. Typically they sit on a ball much larger than they would train on as it photographs better.

Consider how you will use the ball and your body characteristics (see below). Also, keep in mind that if you are a novice exerciser and/or have poor balance, a larger ball will provide more stability and support, thus making exercising easier (muscles won't work as hard).

To avoid being disappointed that your ball is smaller than you expected, test out the ball size before ordering. Most people underinflate a ball because they are so firm (like a rock) inflated to its maximum diameter. To see if a 55cm ball is right for you, place a mark on a wall 20 inches high (16 in. for a 45cm ball), and squat next to it. Consider that you will sink down a few inches (depending on your weight and amount of inflation). This is approximately how tall the ball will be when sitting on it. Get a larger size if you don't like this height!

        GENERAL GUIDELINES:

        Your HeightBall Size (max. height/diameter)
        less than 5' 0" 45 cm (18 in.)
        5' 0" to 5' 6"55 cm (22 in.)
        5' 7"- 6' 1"65 cm (26 in.)
        6' 2" - 6' 8"75 cm (30 in.)
        6' 9" and up85 cm (34 in.)
A LARGER BALL MAY BE NEEDED IF YOU:
have long legs for your height
        have back problems
want the ball mainly for something besides core strengthening--i.e. stretching, pilates, yoga, etc.
want the ball to be used as a chair

An exercise ball is VERY firm at its maximum diameter. If in doubt, go with a larger ball (you don't have to inflate it to the maximum diameter). This means getting a ball one size larger than the chart suggests if you are near the upper range.

Using an Exercise Ball as an Office Chair

If your desk height is 29-30 inches and you are of average weight, the 65cm ball is recommended. Further consideration can be given to the height of the chair seat you will be replacing -- keeping in mind the ball will sink down when you sit on it. The amount of sinking depends on your weight and how much you inflate it. (The ball will be firmer, i.e. sink less, when inflated closer to its maximum diameter.) A general guideline is to get a ball with a max. diameter that is at least 4 inches greater than your chair height.

        EXERCISE BALL INFLATION METHODS

        most bicycle pumps
        hand pumps for air rafts
electric air compressor with cone-shaped nozzles

NOTE: needle pumps (like those to inflate basketballs) will work only on the Fitness Ball (adapter included), not the Fitball.

If you have any doubt about how to inflate your ball, buy an air pump for $3 more.

hello all, i haven't checked in for a couple of days. cause i didn't do anything. i have been bummed about the couple of pounds in weight. i know it isn't fat but still.....

so i poured it on today
30 minutes on the bike, 50 crunches, a total of 130 various arm lifts with the weights, 50 leg lifts on each leg, 20 pushups on the ball.

sal, did you get your ball yet? i see you asking questions about it. i know you just made the entry today but my today is your yesterday or some such thing . lol

            justright, you be careful!

i don't see a post from sadiejen on this page. i have to get to stats so i'll check on her journal there.

Wow! Thanks 2big for all the info on balls. That's really a big help and gives me an idea what size to order. Will get one from either ebay (never ordered anything from ebay yet) or Amazon. Not sure though if I should order before or after my islands trip. Don't want it arriving while I'm away and getting returned. Depends on travel dates....

Jimmie... don't get blue about a couple of extra pounds (though I know utterly how it can make you feel); more than likely it'll be the exercise adding muscle weight. Good for you though, getting back on track with a vengence! Better muscle than fat!!

Oh, and...as you can see from the above, haven't yet ordered the ball. When it arrives I might put on a pound or two muscle weight too!

Did all my stuff this morning and the sun is shining....at long last! This winter is going on too long for my liking.

sal, you're a good girl to try to lift my spirits about the extra pounds. my pants still fit though so i know this is not fat. i have it ingrained in my brain that the scale is what i should gauge things by although i know it is a falacy. it's very hard to unlearn something.

i did 46 minutes on the bike this afternoon. rode 7.5 miles and burned up 440 calories. watch the first show of the ninth season of my favorite show, the x files.

i met and exceeded my crunch goal. yippee! this next month is going to be torture i do believe!

You bet Jimmie... it really is hard to unlearn things! Seems you were a real tornado of activity on your bike today though!

As for me... I was a total slug; at least as far as exercise was concerned. Had an early start to my day (4.45...groan, groan) and had to skip exercise and dog walk. The poor hounds weren't impressed with a ten minute run behind the car! Not a good start to the March abs challenge either!

                  Roll on tomorrow!

in florida we call that a hurricane, sal! lol

my trick is to put in an hour long show that i love to watch and zip through all the commercials. that gives me 45 minutes of bike time. watching the xfiles makes it go much faster.

i've done nothing yet today, but will get started on things in just a bit.

the scale thing.......i know it in my head but sometimes it just doesn't equate. i see people here who are working the exercise and still dropping and it seems when i work out more i gain. i know i know it's the muscle thing, but it's still in my headbone. i keep telling myself "the 4's fit, the 4's fit". that always seems to help.

thanks for liking the pics. i just had to be a bit different.

I've been keeping up with my running, with the exception of a couple of days of bitter cold where it would just be plain stupid to have run!
