WOW!! You gals (and guy!) are doing great! Alexa, glad you can join us!!! I can't imagine starting at week 5, but you're determined!!

Irish, that sounds like a lot of pain and I hope today's run went smoother for you! What do you eat before your workout? I would like to eat *something* but every time I do and then exercise, I feel nauseated.

Lisa, what I love about this program is that it's just a guideline for running a 5k....nothing is written on stone. I'm re-redoing week 6, too! I tried 7, but my body says "NO WAY!!"

I tried to do week 7, day 1 on Monday, but it's a good thing that my body tells me how it is because even though I couldn't finish the workout, my legs, butt, everywhere, was just sore on Tuesday...and I even took it
s-l-o-w-l-y. So today, I'm sticking with week 6 because I know I can do it without too much complaining from the ol' body.

Eric, I think some pictures are in order to prove such shaving of said arms and legs, don't you? *grin* Hope those shins are feeling better!

Biogeek, I admit that I'm scared of the razor - I shaved my legs once in HS when I was on the swim team and made it to the state finals. My knees and ankles were a mess! I thank God every day that the female sex drew the short straw on the hair issue! How about if I just promise to wear pantyhose when I'm out on the track and sharing on this thread? o.O

I finished W3D2 earlier today. A friend had suggested two exercises to do daily to increase the strength in my shins and also suggested icing them after each workout. I don't know if those small changes were the fix or not, but my shins hurt much less today then the last few workouts! I am also concentrating more on my stride and form while jogging -- the podcasts come in real handy for this as I don't have to think about timing or anything else other than form.

Hope everyone else is hanging tough (bonus points to anyone who starts humming the New Kids tune -- or even knows what I'm talking about!) and not ROFL while picturing me in hose...

Hey everyone - thanks for the warm welcome

Irish - TOM and an empty stomach run sounds awful! TOM makes me weak and blah too.

Eric - I used to be a NKOTB fan

I was planning a run tonight but I may postpone til tommorrow because of knee pain and working late - I'll see when I'm home and how dark it is. I'm trying to get into the splits and it's wreaking havoc on the old knees.

Eric, ok...no shaving for you, but wearing hose would be interesting! What are the exercises that were suggested to you to help strengthen the shins? I would like to incorporate that into my workout. Oh, and I only know NKOTB b/c my step-daughters were fans. LOL I seem to recall that some people called them New Kids on the Chopping Block...

Alexa, good luck on your run! I know about old knees and mine seem to remind me of my age every now and then.

Today was a week 6 workout...so far so good! I consider my bike ride to work as my warm-up (takes about 20 minutes), but I do walk a bit before I start to jog and then I dig right in. If I ever get running perfected....maybe I'll consider running to work? hmmmm....

            Hope everyone is doing well!!!!!

              "Shin" strengthening regiment:
              1) Ankles and knees together, standing or sitting, lift toes as if you they were under a heavy object you were trying to lift off the ground. Return toes to floor. Go for a minimum of 3 sets of 10 in a single session.
              2) With leg extended (either sitting, standing, or lying down), slowly "write" the alphabet with your foot (toes pointed away from the body). Go through the entire alphabet twice with each foot.
              3) Rub ice on your shins immediately following your run until sufficiently frozen.

I've been icing after the last two runs and doing the first two activities whenever I think of them while at work, watching TV, or before I get out of bed in the AM. This is in addition to spending a little more time devoted to stretching before my routine (the first two weeks I chalked the "5-minute brisk walk" up as my warm up stretch -- GASP!)

I was informed that splints are the result of a shorter, weaker muscle at the front of your lower leg as compared to your calf muscle in the rear. Apparently the frequent activities throughout the day are supposed to help strengthen and stretch the ligaments along the front of your leg which are the cause of splints. I'm no expert, but it seems to be at least partially responsible for my lessened pain today.

Bio---I'm SOOOO glad this program is not written in stone...I'd have to blast it to pieces just the first rules Moses had brought down from the moutain if they were... Week 6 is where I know I need to be....gosh it seems like it takes for ever now! I think we can form a "6 Week" gang...lol...

Irish---how'd you do today? Gosh, you're probaly working hard and taking care of that sweet baby too!

Eric---Nice job getting on with week 3! Hope the shin splint issue heals/goes away. It sounds like you've got some great feed back on what to do for prevention, help, etc. I need to keep that in mind, too. oOh, we should have tossed in the option of waxing instead of shaving....why does hair slow a person down any ways? You'd think it would speed up the process instead. Oh gosh, NKOTB! Aren't they called "Old Men On the Block" now?

Alexa---Take good care of those knees, for sure! You've got one set and replacements are expensive---so I've heard . I hope you're able to start slow and ease into the miles. Last year I had issues with my knees and ended up stopping completely with the program. I think I just went too much too fast back then. Hope tomorrow goes well for you!

                Week 6 day 1 done for me....again

I followed the structure of the miles instead of the minutes and got in 2 miles....plus the 1/4 of walking for warm up. Gosh, I'm exhausted!

I also found out that 2 people that I work with do the Turkey Trot in our area....one gal has done it two years in a row. This should be fun. At least I have motivation and people to do it with. Of course my DH will still do it with me, but it's even more fun to know that there's other wacked out people who's willing to do it, too! I still haven't got the form from the lady yet. Guess I'll make another call this week....yippppeeee.

Hey everyone, a quick note. I've been uber busy this week, blah. Anyway I was able to get week 6 days 1 and 2 done finally. I'm going to do day 2 again on Thursday before I try and tackle that 25 minute run. It's been tough but it feels so great when you finish you know?

Well my brother is moving into college this weekend and I happen to live in the same town as that college! Yay! So this weekend I'm going to be able to see my parents and my two youngest siblings and of course now I get to stalk my brother! Woohoo!! You know it's what every college freshman wants...an older sister watching his every move....hehehehehehe...this is gonna be fun! Seriously though I live so far from my family I'm so excited about having a sibling in town for a while

Alright I gotta go do the news! Peace out!

Eric- I hope your shins get better! Sounds painful.

Did W5D2 (as is session 2 - is that putting it correctly?) just now. The leap to 8 mins was tough! But managed it, and first thing in the morning too, which I loathe...

                    Have a great weekend everyone

Wrapped up W3 this morning. Shins are better, but I don't see running becoming my favorite exercise. I'm all about the challenge though and am looking forward to running that first 5K. We'll see about the second (and third, fourth, etc) when we get past the first one! Hope everyone has a great weekend.

                        Hello!

Irish---yea for moving to week 6!! ....I it won't be long that we'll all be at week 6, dragging through it...lol. That'll be a good thing! Have fun with your brother. I think that's pretty cool that you get to be big sis and he gets to enjoy the qualities of having family around during the trials of the first year of college (I'm guessing 1st year ).

Alexa--that's right, and good job! Those longer minutes are really challenging. You're doing fantastic! You'll be hitting week 6 soon! I know it!

Eric--- Yea for completeing week 3! I'm sure I'll be at week 6 when you get there. I completely understand, running is not my favorite exercise, but I know this program has been the best match with following Atkins, for me anyways. I think you're doing an awesome job. I'm so relieved for you that your shins are doing better!!! It sounds like those regiments are working great!

                        Bio---how's your week going??

                        Okay, my turn.

Well, I went back to work this week. I was so thrown off my exercise schedule!!! There was SOO much stuff to do before the kids showed up on Friday that I didn't have much of any energy when I got home in the afternoons.

I only managed 1 session with week 6 because of the busyness-----but I did exercise each day, or at least considered it exercise: cleaning, jump-roping, playing basketball with a semi-deflated basketball, walking, and more walking. I have plans to hit my treadmill this afternoon...of which, strangely enough, I'm looking forward to. It's been collecting dust this week. So, I'll post more when I get done. Next week I need to get back on the horse and focus on getting the miles done.

Play hard and have a great weekend!!!

Exercise is exercise, right? I'm sure once you settle into the new daily routine, you'll be able to fit the C25K routine back in comfortably. Of course, it wouldn't be good for an accountability partner to allow any of you to slack off for too long, so although it would be fun to catch up to everyone in week 6, I instead plan to (virtually) smack each of you once for every week behind you become if and when I get to week 6!

With that said, I completed W4D1 today. I completed 9-1/2 laps during the routine and calculated an average of 2-1/2 minutes per lap while jogging which would seem to suggest that a 5K in 30 minutes is doable assuming I can jog for 3 minutes non-stop. two 5-minute stretches was enough to soak my t-shirt in sweat today. NC is expecting rain the rest of the week as the remains of tropical storm Faye sweep through the area so we'll see if I can get in 2 more days of the routine.

Good luck to everyone as you push yourself to avoid a Greeneggs spanking!

Lisa--2.5 miles! That's awesome!!! You'll be ready for those 5Ks before you know it! DH *loves* the stairmaster! And you can not find a dry spot on his shirt when he's done...it's gross, but impressive at the same time! LOL

Alexa and Irish, hope you two are doing well on this WOE and the 5K training!!

As for me....I did jog over the weekend and restarted week 7 yesterday morning. However, yesterday afternoon, I broke my right foot! Sad thing was, it was a stupid, freak accident caused by some ^$#%@%!#%^ students in the stairwell. I thought I had just sprained my ankle/foot, but the boss made me go to the hospital and sure enough, broken. Doctor said I'll be out for ~ 8 weeks, so I'm afraid that I won't be able to do the 5K Turkey Trot this year! I should be able to walk it though, or hobble it before I gobble it. (oh, so bad...sorry!) I'm so used to exercising hard, that I know it is going to drive me up the wall. I promise to check in on you guys to see how you're doing.
