Re: ADBB Vitamin Club Converstion Thread~ week of Jan. 21

SG, I wouldn't worry about taking an omega 9 supplement. First of all, it's not an essential fatty acid like omega 3 & 6. This means that our bodies can make omega 9 & not the other two omegas. When we eat unsaturated fat, our bodies can convert parts of that to omega 9. There are several different fats that are considered omega 9, the most common oleic acid from olive oil as well as other monounsaturated fats. There's another type that comes from rapeseed oil, but I can't remember what it's called. I think my various nutrition professors would be happy of how much I've remembered over the years.

We take quite a bit of omega 3 to compensate for all the meat we eat and to help promote cardiovascular health. As a side note, I personally believe it has helped me with my psoriasis as my entire face, neck, upper chest were covered with red, blotchy sores and silver scales. I hardly have any patches anymore & stopped taking medications on a daily basis for over a year. Every once in awhile, I get too stressed out and have a flare-up, but it doesn't last as long as it used to. Thank goodness!!!

    P.S.---I've taken my evening supplements!

Silly... as you see Bio has given you a far better (and spot on) answer than I ever could've (omega 3 vs. omega 6)!! Thank you Bio!
I tend to read things and then forget the exact science behind them... I just remember what I should, or should not, assimilate. Surely I need supplements for poor memory.... Anyone know any???

              Gee thanks Jimmie!!

Glad to see ginger's on that list! Just love ginger. But... "Ginko Bilboa"??? Sounds like something Sylvester Stallone might take!

Oooops no... sorry Sylvester... it was Biloba not Bilboa. See? I need some... couldn't even remember the name, when typing this post!

i get a daily article from sparkpeople. this mornings article is quite lengthy so i won't past all of it it, but i'll leave the link. the article cautions about using herbs because they are not regulated the same as vitamins/minerals.

To reduce health risks when choosing and using herbal supplements:
                            • Always tell your doctor if you are taking herbs. Herbs can interact with other medications causing serious side effects.
                            • Do not self-treat serious medical conditions with medicinal herbs.
                            • Do not take herbal supplements if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. There is no way to determine what level of herbs may harm a fetus or nursing infant.
                            • Do not give herbal products to children under 3 years of age. Always check with your child’s pediatrician first.
                            • Only purchase herbal supplements that display an expiration (or use-by) date, as well as a lot or batch number.
                            • The herbal supplement should state which part of the plant was used to make the product, such as root, leaf, or blossom.
                            • If a blend of ingredients is used in the herbal supplement, the label should list the individual ingredients as well as the amount of each.
                            • Although not required, the supplement should indicate the type of solvent used when processing the herb.
