Re: ADBB Vitamin Club Converstion Thread

Hey Cincy....would you mind posting what's in the walmart mutivitamin vs. the Centrum? The Centrum is a multivitamin as well, isn't it? For you, I would be concerned about taking too much of certain vitamins, in particular, the fat-soluble vitamins. You CAN get too much of a good thing!!

Thanks for that link Jimmie! The only thing on I have off that list, on a rare occasion, is cammomile tea. There's so much out there it's good to know what's important to look for on a label!

        Just took mine for today.

Bio, I love that you're in this with us, you're very informative!

Re: ADBB Vitamin Club Converstion Thread

Cincy--I can't remember the toxic levels of the fat-soluble vitamins, but the ones you need to be wary of are A, D, E, and K. Excess A & E tend to be stored in body tissues, especially the liver and of course, fat.

If I understand what you posted, both vitamins together would have 49% RDA of vitamin A. You should be just fine with that. However, the safest form of Vit A is in its provitamin form, such as beta carotene (carotenoids). You'll have to read labels on vitamin bottles carefully, just like you do for food.

With E, try to take the natural form of it rather than synthetic versions. There are many chemical variations of E, but I won't bore you with that! Look for "D" in front of the chemical name, i.e. D-alpha-tocepheryl acetate. If there's an "L" in front, even with a "D," it's synthetic, i.e. D-L-alpha.....

In my nutrition classes, I recall learning that when you cook veggies high in fat-soluble vitamins, you won't lose the vitamins if you boil or steam the veggies like you would with water-soluble ones (B and C). You will lose the nutrients if you fry 'em in oil, but if you're using the oil you cooked in to make a sauce or whatever, you get your fat-soluble nutrients anyway. How much nutrients do you lose from the various cooking methods? I have no idea. I guess you win with some & lose out with others.

Hope this helps. I'm such a geek, I could go on & on about it!

Re: ADBB Vitamin Club Converstion Thread

SG & Sally, I gotta do what I can to help folks out. Part of my pay-it-forward philosophy.

Cincy, it is difficult to fine the PERFECT vitamin. You need to think about WHY you're taking vitamins & what you think they'll do for you. There's no need to blindly pop pills.

If you just want an overall, once-a-day pill to supplement the foods you eat, I would look for a brand that doesn't have a lot of fillers in their pills, i.e. starch, gluten, sugar, etc. A lot of brands are getting pretty consumer-friendly about that sort of thing.

If, however, you're taking supplements to help your body fight ailments or prevent one, then you need to do some research in what supplements would be right for you, the dosage, when to take them, etc. Since you're doing Atkins, you can always start with reading Atkin's Vitanutrients book. It has a lot of great info. Your local library should have rows of books for you to peruse.

FYI--I took my vitamins this morning....have you?

All the B vitamins are great for hair, whether you have thin hair, dry hair, loosing hair, etc. Some of the B vitamins go by different names, so niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folic acid (B9). Also, if you take too much vitamin A, one side effect is hair loss! Reducing it will reverse the hair loss from vit A overload. Otherwise, vit A helps as does E and C. I think there are some that I'm missing, but that's what came to the top of my head. Ack, it's Monday!!!
