    Re: Another 50+ member

    Hi, Carole,

Somehow I missed your last few posts. Lots of interesting stuff there!

I wish we could come up with a cracker that tastes like a saltine, too. The only time I really want one is when I have soup. Nothing else seems to fill the bill!

Great about the sweatshirt fitting you now, too! I tried on a shirt today that I haven't been able to wear for a while and it looks good! It felt almost like having new clothes.

I never pay much attention to clothes when I shop, but lately I have been scoping out cute things that I would like to wear when I drop more weight. It's so exciting to think that I really WILL be able to wear them someday!

When you find a good bun recipe, do let me know! I am used to not eating bread now, but it sure would be nice to have some once in a while. I do love the pumpkin bread with flax seed. I had that this morning with butter spread on it, and I really liked it.

Sadie sounds so cute! Glad she's getting a little better on her leash. And glad your Mom can get out and walk, too.

Tomorrow is my weigh day. I am hoping to have broken this stall.

    The shrimp sounds wonderful!!

I don't have the pumpkin/flax bread recipe -- please share!!!!

I wrote you last week that the pictures you are posting show quite a difference through your middle. I know what you mean about looking at things in the stores now - I have blindly gone to the "Just My Size" T-shirt style tops the past few years...so I wear them because they are big and don'thug anything that shouldn't be hugged too tightly!

I did my 3 miles this morning because we are waiting for rain to come in and I wanted to get the walk in before it started. Now it's almost 3:00 and the rain still hasn't started, but at least I feel better. Since we've had 2 days over 70 degrees the neighbors arein their yards raking and uncovering the new blooms that are peeking out from the earth - the trees are starting to bud out and I had a mosquito try to bite me last night, so Spring is showing it's beautiful self!! Yea!! I want to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get some fertilizer to put on the lawn...we've have only had 2 years to try and get the lawn in shape. The people who lived here before us cut the lawn every week and a half and called it good - so it needs a lot of tender loving care. Our neighbor has a landscaping/lawn mowing business, I talked to him a couple weeks ago about bringing some rock in (to replace the mulch that was moldy and buggy) and a couple loads of dirt to fill in before we put the rock down. He was happy for the work (he's only been in business 1 year) and just ask if we could wait until he was ok'd to work by his surgeon - he just had roter cuff surgery last month and will be able to work again in a couple weeks. I can't wait because I've been saving to get this done since we moved in. I put the change that's leftover in our pockets into a kitty and I have over $300.00 now so it's time to spend it!!

Carole, here's the pumpkin bread recipe: (I think I copied it from Linda's.)

          pumpkin bread

          1 oz cream cheese
1 1/2 tbsp ground flax seed
          1 med egg
3 tbsp of Pure Pumpkin (I use Libby's)
          2 packets of splenda
1 tsp of Pumpkin Pie spice
          Sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

Mix all together and cook in microwave for 4 - 5 minutes. Let cool. Tastes great with a bit of butter spread on it. In my microwave 4 minutes and 15 seconds does it perfectly.

Thanks so much for the comment on the improvement in my shape. It's coming off my bust a lot faster than it is my tummy!

Your weather is remarkably similar to ours. We've had two days up in the 70's... glorious! And I also saw my first mosquito of the season last evening!

I didn't exercise today. Don't know if it's the lingering effects of the bug or not, but I felt zonked again today. Decided to take Saturday and Sunday as rest days.

The lawn project sounds exciting! I have been meaning to start on my veggie garden but have been too "busy." I will definitely plan to get started on that Monday!

Labarum, 60 isn't nearly as scary as it looked ten years ago. Welcome!

Labarum - your pictures are phenominal! When I first started I was looking at people's before/during/after pictures and saw yours. Thanks for stopping in and saying hi.

Sunny -- does that make 1 serving of Pumpkin Bread....and what type of bowl or container do you make it in? I can't wait to make this - it sounds wonderful. I haven't had any pumpkin since I started, I've looked at a couple recipes that use it but never tried it yet. Tomorrow I skip Rung 5 (haven't had a drink in 10 years) so I'm going on to Rung 6 Legumes...yummie!!

Carole--- I just found out I have diabetes. This has really blown me away as I have been on low carb for 6 weeks. Did a Glucola fasting test the other day for a couple of hours... my last read was 173. I flipped out. When I got home from the clinic I had the shakes until I had some protein. I haven't talked to my doctor yet as she is on vacation this week but will find out about meds next week.

My husband is a diabetic and is thin. Not fair.

Nyna -- here is the Flax Cookie recipe

                    2 T flax meal
                    2 packet Spenda
                    1 tsp cinnamon

                    Pinch of ground ginger
                    Pinch of ground cloves
                    1 T butter
                    2 T water
mix dry ingredients, add butter and microwave 30 secs. Add water let sit for 30 seconds then place on a piece of parchment paper. Spread thin with back of a spoon. (1 divide the “batter” and make 2 cookies they are about 3” in diameter each).

Microwave on high for 3 – 3-1/2 min. till crisp. Let cool.

Don't forget to count the carbs. 1 for flax and 2 for Splenda.

Hi Nyna -- Don't flip about being diabetic -- this WOE is the best thing for you. Since I started Atkins I've gone from "uncontrolled" to "controlled diabetes and my A1C has gone down considerably.

I looked up Glucola fasting test -- are you pregnant? I see that is what the test is used for. When you talk to your doctor they will give you testing supplies to get you going but once you have to buy them yourself, shop around for the best prices. My husband and I are both Type 2 and our insurance doesn't cover supplies - just the medicine we take, so I went online and shopped prices. The best I found was with American Diabetes Wholesale...I bought a "Advocate" brand meter, test strips and lancet. The meter was only about $25.00 with 100 test strips and the lancets (box of 100) are under $3.00 a box. The lancing device was about $4.00 and additional test strips are about $17.00 for 50 strips. It was the cheapest place I could find and I haven't had any trouble with anything I've gotten from them. Hubby and I both use the same brand so I only have to buy from 1 place and 1 brand. The meter I was given at the doctors office we couldn't afford if we both used them -- if I remember right the strips alone were about $30.00 for a box of 50. I'm not saying you have to use the place I use....I was just stressing that if you shop around the prices vary from place to place.

Once you talk to your doctor next week you will be in better shape because you'll be able to get some of your questions answered -- write down what you want to ask because you'll forget if you don't!! You'll probably be told that Atkins is not good for you - but believe me, that's not true!

I take glyb/metformin 5/500 once a day in the morning and metformin 1000 mg at bedtime. If I eat the way I should (Atkins) and exercise everyday I feel real good. If I wait too long inbetween meals (like today) I get a little shaky but once I have a piece of ham w/mayo or cream cheese or an ounce of cheese and sit down for a few minutes I feel better. You will learn when you need to eat -- your body will tell you. Don't stress out about this - diabetes is now one of the top diseases doctors are diagnosing now. I remember 10 - 15 years ago when everyone was talking about their high cholesterol -- now it's their Type 2 diabetes. I just consider I have the "in" thing for the doctor to diagnose now...lol! As far as your husband is concerned....he's thin, he's diabetic...it's not fair! I agree. My husband has heart problems, triple bypass 3 years ago, stents later that year and last year an ICD (defibulator) was implanted in his chest -- then 4 months ago they said he has Type 2 diabetes. He needs to loose weight, but it's not something he's ready to do yet, and he's so damn picky he'd never make it more than 2 days with this WOE! I'm trying to get him to walk at work during his lunch and most days he does, but he can think of more excuses! He's 52 years old, his parents both passed from heart disease and he seems to think there is nothing he can do to reverse his "fate"....so sad!

Let me know what the doctor says -- you need to start seeing an Endocrinologist (diabetic doctor) as soon as possible and have an A1C taken - that will tell them what your 3 month average for glucose is. When I was first diagnosed mine was over 10 ..... now it's just over 5 - not bad when all I've done is start Atkins and loose 21 pounds. Don't let them talk you out of Atkins -- IT WORKS!!!

Sadie was very much a lady when she first saw her cake. She smelled it all over, then she licked it in a couple places but she waited until I cut a slice for her before she ate any. It lasted about 5 days (in the fridge) and she loved every bite she took! It was expensive (because I had it shipped 2nd day) but she had a great time and I figured it was worth every penny!

She was a real pistol on Halloween -- we had her try on her outfit a few times for about a half hour each time the week of Halloween but she really thought it was a toy and wanted to tear it up when we took it off her. The night of Halloween she was excited when I got the costume out of the closet and she let me put it on with no trouble. Every kid that came to the door made a comment about her costume and she seemed to eat up the attention! The dinosaur head didn't come up far enough to be on her head but it was still cute. The arms seemed to be hugging her when she walked and she sat on her chair and the arm looked like it was hers on the arm....it was hysterical!

Yes, the pumpkin bread recipe is for one person. I make it in a small individual serving size glass bowl, then turn it out onto a plate when it's done.

There is another recipe for pumpkin mock danish that tastes heavenly, but it isn't so bready... it uses 1/2 c. pumpkin, 1 egg, 2 ounces cream cheese, pumpkin pie spice and splenda. You microwave it until it is set all around the edges and still runny in the very center. It's my favorite pumpkin dessert.

I saw that one and saved it also. I'm more excited about the pumpkin bread because it seems like something I could have for breakfast or even with dinner! I have a turkey in the freezer that I've been thinking about getting out and cooking before our weather stays warm. I thought that might be something good with turkey (maybe a sandwich.....yum!). Thank you so much. I need to go back to Linda's site and see what is there for OWL -- I went when I was on induction but haven't been there except a couple times since. I lvoe the stuffed green pepper recipe she has - it's delicious! It's one of DH's favorite things I make because he loves stuffed green peppers and before this WOE I never made them....now I make them and everyone eats them!

                                Thanks again!!
