    Re: Another 50+ member

Good evening to anyone who might come upon this post. Today was my 3rd week of Atkins and as of this morning I am down 17 pounds. I now weigh what I weighed 9 years ago when I went into the hospital to have an ovary & fallopean tube removed. I was appalled that morning when I had to weigh and I weighed 200 pounds.....but it's amazing how 9 years and 17 pounds can make you hopeful and happy that those 17 pounds are gone.

I feel I'm back to square one - dh and I were married 9 years ago in June and my surgery was in November of that year so I have now lost my "happily married" weight and now I can loose the "unhappily married" weight I gained with my other 2 marriages....LOL! Hey, you have to make a joke of it - if I didn't I'd cry! But I disgress ---- I am back where I was 9 years ago and now I can continue to loose the weight that is literally making me sick. Nine years ago I didn't have high blood pressure, high triglicerides, type 2 diabetes or because of the other problems, a higher risk of heart problems. I want to get back to that point again - I am doing this to hopefully get off the medications I'm managed to eat myself into.....I need to get well - my husband and my mother depend on me, I am the only one that drives in our household among other things. This morning we went and got mom hearing aides - that will help her quality of life and make things much quieter here! I was really afraid that dh and I were going to be hard of hearing because of how loud she needed the TV and radio. I remember how she use to yell at me to "turn that noise down" when I was a teenager....it's funny how I wanted to yell for her to turn her noise down....what goes around comes around.

Ok - I'm stepping down off my soap box for the night.

      Re: Another 50+ member

Carole, congratulations on the 17 pound - 9 year milestone.

I know about the "happily married" and "unhappily married" weights, too.

Your goals have a solid ring to them... I am certain that you will make it. I love reading the stories of people who have gotten to their goal and all the physical problems that have disappeared and of the medications they were able to go off.

You will be one of those heroes, too!

Feeling a little philosophical, too, tonight.... am seeing a LOT of what goes around comes around.

hi Debbie and Desertthorn...thank you for stopping by my journal and leaving messages..... you are right, there are so many obstacles we face that the younger people don't have - but we can and WILL overcome them...it just might take us a little longer.

I've been waxing philosophical so much lately -- I guess the fact that this WOE is really working for me and it seems almost effortless that I'm just so afraid I'll wake up and it's all a dream. I read the journals to keep inspired and I look at the before/after pics that are posted for additional inspiration. There are days I want to jump forward to the end and not have to worry about this anymore, but I've done those diets....that doesn't work. I was notorious for fad diets throughout my 20's and 30's - in my 40's I decided I didn't care....and now I'm in my 50's and the cold hard reality has hit that I have to do this the right way - slowly and enjoy the journey.

I hope both of you keep in touch....I'm interested in your journeys too! Take care, stop by often and enjoy each day to the fullest.

That sounds like my history... except here I am starting over at 60. I changed my ticker to a turtle to help reinforce that I am in this for the long haul and to not expect quick results.

Since I started on a different diet January 2, and just switched to Atkins after realizing that the other diet was NOT going to work for me (I was starving!), I am not getting the rapid induction loss.

Also, do you take supplements and do you include them in your carb counts? I have osteoporosis and MUST take calcium... and that is 4 carbs a day right there. Plus my vitamins, glucosamine, etc. have carbs. I have cut out several supplements also because of that. I am looking for supplements without cornstarch and sugars, but they are hard to find.

I tried cutting my food carbs back to keep the total count under 20, but I feel terrible when I do that. I also have terrible crashes every day after lunch now. I think I am not eating enough early in the day, then eating too much after dinner.

So now I am eating around 20 carbs a day, but with the supplements, they are at OWL level.

I have just decided that if I lose 1 pound a week, it is fine. This is the only WOE that will work for me, so I will adapt myself to its schedule instead of trying to adapt it to my schedule!

I think I'd ask one of the members who's been here a long time about counting the carbs in your meds.....it sounds like if you did count your med carbs out you'd only have just a very few carbs left in the day and that isn't healthy. I have no idea what my prescription meds have in them for carb counts....maybe I better make a call to the pharmacy and find out.....I'd hate to swallow 3/4ths of my carbs allowed each day because I ate myself into this nightmare!!!

I asked on another Atkins forum and was told not to worry about the carbs in supplements.

I'm not really satisfied with that answer, though.

In looking through Dr. Atkins' book, it looks like he did not include the carbs in supplements in his patients' counts. But then, again, he had his supplements specially formulated, and I bet they didn't include any fillers!

                  Re: Another 50+ member

This morning I scooped out the driveway before dh's ride got here. Talked to the neighbor yesterday and he appologized for not clearing our driveway but his blade broke during the night when he was out clearing parking lots....we finally get snow and his equipment breaks....I feel bad for him! The snow was heavy but I managed to get the driveway cleared in about a half hour. That's another thing that was so much easier 20 years ago....I've been thinking lately of things that were easier 20 yeras ago and was surprised at the number of things I came up with.

I bought another spaghetti squash and am going to bake it tonight. Also got a couple yellow squash & zucchini to mircowave...had yellow squash the other night when we went out for dinner and it tasted so good - so I'm going to try it myself tonight.

I've been very tired all week (thanks to my cold) but today was the first time my blood sugar was low in the morning. It has been running between 120 - 138...this morning it was 89. I'm hoping that means the cold is finally letting go. It helps with my water intake because I'm so thirsty because my throat is dry from coughing. I drink 150oz water a day and don't have any trouble getting it all down - I just keep thinking that before I drank about the same amount everyday, but it was diet rite and decaf coffee....now I have a couple cups of decaf but I make sure I have my water in before I have any after dinner. Most days I have my water drank by 5:00 p.m. so I either add another 30oz of water or I have decaf without anything in it.

imagood1, so sorry you've been sick. Sure hope you are well soon.

Wonderful news about the sugar levels!!!

I fried some yellow squash with green onions the other night and it was wonderful. So amazing that we can have things like that on our "diet."

I bought a spaghetti squash, too, but haven't fixed it yet. Trying to think of some delicious sauce... maybe with butter, cream, garlic and parmesan... to top it with.

..... edited to add.... CRAB.... that's what I'll use!

                      Re: Another 50+ member

I had the spaghetti squash tonight for dinner -- it was delicious!!! I've figured out which spices I like on it so it's not so bland. I diced up a couple slices of tomato and mircowaved it with some italian seasoning and some crumbled hamburger - my mom & hubby had their spaghetti and I had mine....it was yummie!!

Tomorrow I'm going to make an Alfredo sauce with some chicken slices on top of the spaghetti sauce for lunch....that will be something different!!

I'm looking forward to Monday when I move on to OWL. Thanks for reading my ramblings!!

                        That sounds scrumptious!!!

I had to go back and start a clean induction, so it will be a while before I move onto OWL. I may do an extended induction to see how it goes. I still have a lot of food combos to try before I start getting tired of the menu!

I made a mock danish for dessert tonight. I used 1/4 t. maple extract and liquid splenda (generic), so saved two carbs by using the liquid. I was so tickled. I wouldn't have been able to have dessert if I had used the packets of Splenda.

                        Anyway, the best of luck!

Sunny - what happened that you had to go back to induction? Hope nothing bad happened. I just really feel that I need to go forward to OWL to keep from getting bored and to keep my body wanting to loose weight. My alfredo sauce was really good...probably not what most would call alfredo, but it was my version! I put some chicken chunks in it and ate it out of a bowl like soup....decided not to put spaghetti squash under it -- didn't think I needed that much for lunch. Next time I'm going to put a little broccoli in it .... I swear it reminded me of a cream of chicken soup so i thought with broccoli in it it would taste like a "cream of broccoli & chicken soup" sounds yummie!!!

I was trying to make a soft boiled egg for breakfast this morning but for some reason I forgot to set the timer.....so I ended up making a hard boiled egg instead. I chopped it up and put it on top of my salad tonight...that really made the salad taste so much better...might try that again.

Hope all is well with you!!

good Monday morning!!!! I got on the scale this morning and nothing happened....I'm still at 200, BUT that's good because I haven't gained anything and I ate SuperBowl yesterday. Of course everything I ate was perfectly legal and my family ate the same things without knowing! I made the cheese crust pizza tfek70 came up with -- it was soooo good and amazing that there was no bread crust. Check it out if you like pizza and want something that tastes like the "real" thing!!!

I haven't measured yet this morning, had to get dh out the door and start laundry. Want to measure before I have breakfast, even though I know that doesn't make any difference...lol!! The sun is shining, I don't know if Puxatawny Phil saw his shadow or not, I always paid more attention to Dunkirk Dave - he was right more often! Ok - have a great day -- I'll be around

                              Good Afternoon, Carole

Congratulations on not gaining after superbowl eating and well done on sneaking the lowcarb food past the family

My dh is quite content to eat lowcarb as long as I don't stress the fact it is not 'normal' food

Thanks for mentioning Tfek70's pizza - one for the recipe book for sure

For the first time in I don't know how many years we awoke to an inch or so of snow, which meant a general panic across the media with radio and TV forecasters telling everyone to stay home, most of the airports closed and half the train operators not runnung to schedule. I assume most of UK had more snow than our measly inch

My dh had a back specialist appointment scheduled 30 plus miles away to go to but when I rang to see if it was still on we were told the specialist had cancelled as he was snowed in at home, so it had to be rescheduled.

Ah well - it would have been no fun to be caught behind a traffic pileup in the snow in the middle of nowhere I suppose - though it had cleared completely outside our flat by early afternoon.

So I spent a lazy day at home catching up on baking etc while dh watched old films on the TV.

I hope it doesn't start to freeze before I get my gym visit in tonight.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

good morning Lizellen -- your post made me smile....we had 8 inches of snow last week - it was pretty but it just reminds me that it's still winter out there. The reason I smiled at your post was because I use to live 7 miles from a ski resort and we had snows that if we had less than 3 feet it was called "a light dusting".....believe me, I didn't find the snow in the least bit funny and as soon as I could I moved - back to the midwest but then we moved again and while we're only 1 state "south" we only get 1 major (6 inch or more) snowstorm each year. We moved my mother in with us last March, I was tired of making a mad dash 250 miles to help her clean up her yard after "yet another ice storm".....the house was getting to be too much for her to take care of alone, and it was harder for me to go to Iowa after my husband has his triple bypass. Mom was sick the beginning of last year and after a couple bouts in the hospital she decided to sell her home and move in with us. We all get along real well so it's great for all of us.

Glad you were able to spend a relaxing day at home with your dh. I hope your husbands specialist appt goes well when it's rescheduled. Thank you for stopping and reading my ramblings

I wanted to tell you, when I first signed up for this board one of the first people I read their success was you. I was so impressed by your dedication to this WOE, your knowledge but most importantly, how you are willing to help others as much as you can. You are one of the reasons I joined the board and have been living the Atkins life. Thank you One of the first recipes I made was your zucchini with ham and cheese on top - I really didn't care for zucchini before, but I really enjoy it now. Mom and I have your recipe at least once a week!! Yummie
