  • Hi All! :wave

I'm sneaking in here since I was too late to be an "official" member - but was warmly welcomed to be part of your team anyway, even if my numbers don't count!

I haven't measured myself yet, but I will post that. I'm on day 9 of induction, and doing ok! My mom, brother, and my husband are all doing Atkins right now too, so hopefully the support structure will work!

Edited to add more about me: I'm 26 and have struggled with weight since I was about 18. I had a bad childhood that resulted in my moving in with my aunt and uncle at 14, and I believe that is what kicked off my emotional dependency on food. I didn't really get "fat" until I was probably 19. But since then it's been all downhill. I have a really bad dependency on food to make me feel good - and I need to get over that. If anyone has any good books about this, let me know. If I don't get to the root of this and fix it, my fear is that I will struggle with this weight for the rest of my life. As it is, I can't ever imagine being 180 pounds, let alone my actual goal of 160. But with your support, I hope I can try!

    • Hi Steph :wave

      Cleochatra posted recently here

      about how a book called
      The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution
was helping her deal with emotional eating issues.

I did a google searh for the book and found this quote on amazon.com from it
I want to challenge you about your weight and yourself in a way that you have never been challenged before. We both know that the endless string of fad diets has done nothing but leave you heavier than before. The Ultimate Weight Solution is a book that is the product of thirty years of working with overweight patients and figuring out what really works. Giving you the real tools to permanent weight loss will change your life and its quality. I am determined to get you immediate results and do so in a way that will last a lifetime. Permanent weight loss is about changing many things in your life, and The Ultimate Weight Solution will help you do just that -- change yourself, change the way you think about dieting, change the way you think about food, change the way you think about your health. The 7 Keys that are in this book will open doors to a new life for you
Apparently the way of eating he suggests is not the same as Atkins but the psycological(sp?) part of it has been praised here a lot.

      • Thanks Eliz, for letting me know. I'll be checking out that book, despite the fact that I absolutely despise Dr. Phil.

            • back on induction day 3

I think I posted this in the wrong place a few hours ago. For some reason it is not showing up here. I'll try again.

Special thanks to Michelle and Elizellen and Roshan for your encouraging words. I pulled myself together three days ago. It was about time! I had gained 10 pounds in the last week alone and had run out of clothes and even underwear I could get into. I had given away all my + sizes after I was so sure last summer that I had lost and gained and lost for the last time. Maybe that is what happened. I had gotten too cocky and thought I had won - that eating a few cookies would be ok. That's what started it all - about a month ago. Then on Jan. 1 I went on induction for twelve days, but - and here I'm not sure why - got myself into a black hole about food and it was self destructing carb binging from there. Maybe it was the old food cravings and addictions, as you suggested, Michelle, that got triggered. But rereading the food diary that I was keeping, I don't think so. I think it was just being really hungry - on induction level foods - and eating too many calories and getting so frustrated about even gaining while on induction that on day 12 I gave in to dried fruit and walnuts, bread and butter and it was downhill from there. I can't purge trigger foods, because my husband, who has no weight problem at all, can eat everything. And my problem is that I was bingeing on just about everything. It's not just about getting rid of sweets or a specific thing that I recognize as a trigger food. I can - and often do - eat a pound of meat at one sitting - and don't feel full afterward. Now for the past two and a half days I have been limiting calories as well as having only eaten turkey breast and drunk water in the hope of getting a jump start and will then start to add leafy greens and olive oil. It's like the Mother Goose rhyme about the little girl, who when she was good, was very, very good and when she was bad, was horrid.

I still need to start again with taking the supplements and exercising. I am drinking enough water - 2 liters day 1 and three liters yesterday.

It is hard not to beat myself up, when I'm being so self destructive and giving in to bingeing. I have been reading all your entries, even though I have not written anything in several days. I hope I can continue to report progress - one day at a time.

                    • Hello Marji

Welcome back. I certainly know how you feel. I've been there! I've had a long journey to get were I am today. Along the way, I spent a few years in Overeaters Anonymous and it did me a lot of good. A big part of my problem was emotional eating. OA helped me to deal with that. There are also some good books like When Food is Love. Of course I'm not you so I don't really know what is causing your intense hunger. I can only say that I discovered that I was not starving for food. I just found being hungry for food was easier then dealing with what I was really starving for.

I wish you luck finding and fighting your demon. Have you ever tried free flow writing? Just put the pen on the paper and let it flow. I am usually shocked by what this dredges up.

:hug :hug :hug :hug :hug :hug :hug

                      Keep on fighting girl.

                        • Day 5 and I am hanging in, still with zero carbs and for the past 4 days 3 liters of water. This evening I'll see if I am in ketosis and add 2 cups of leafy greens and olive oil tomorrow if I am. I was on the stationary bike yesterday for 35 minutes and am trying to work up enough energy to repeat the feat today. Reread several chapters in the Atkins "Bible" and praying that I won't sabatoge myself this time around.
Michelle, I have read the book _When Food is Love_ when I first thought that my hunger was emotional. In December 2002 I pilgrimaged to Dr. Atkins in NYC and after lengthy examinations and conversations, he claimed that I was extremely metabolically resistant and that was causing most of my problems. I won't deny that - as you said - dealing with eating problems is easier then dealing with other problems. I do have, among other things that I try to repress and not think about, a botched hip operation that took place in September and a planned revision in March, both of which I have a hard time coming to terms with, but I don't think that is what is making me hungry. I also find I am hungrier *after* I eat. Any of you like that?
And, yes, Michelle, sometimes I do free flow writing and find it useful and enlightening.
                          Marji

                            • I had a good day. It was also sort of weird. I felt thin today. Now don't laugh I know that I weigh 345lbs but today for a little while I just did not feel fat. I felt thin. You know it takes a lot of muscle to carry around 345 lbs every day. Today I was aware of the inner muscular me and it felt good. Soon enough gravity found me again, but for a brief I had a glimps of goal off in the distance.

                              Weird eh!

I know what you mean Michelle about 'fat' and 'thin' days.
Lately I have been feeling thin too though only when fully dressed!

Anyway despite that it looks as if the scales disagree though the tape measure is on my side this week.

                                Here are my Tuesday stats:
Weight : 179 pounds (no change :sadblinky )
                                Bust 44" (down 1/2" :joy )
                                Waist 39.5" (down 1 1/2" :joy :joy )
                                Hips : 46" (no change :sadblinky )

How did everyone else fare this week?
