Baarb, the 'power of 5' list is not a list of all the foods allowed on that particular rung, but just some suggestions of how much of some foods to add.
So Brazil nuts are allowed!! Dr Atkins suggested adding one ounce of nuts which would mean about 6-7 Brazil nuts. For me that would mean a 'slow snack' as I can never crack those hard shells easily!!

I had never heard of macademia nuts pre-Atkins, but see that Lidl sell packs of them (they are quite tasty too!!).

          Thanks Elizellen!

I'm glad I'm not the only one un-enlightened about macademias. Yay about brazils! But yes, I'll need to get down the gym in order to be able to crack them by the time I'm on nut rung

A question about yoghurt. I read a couple of recipes on the OWL forum about yoghurt, which I'd like to try now I'm on dairy.

Are there any yoghurts available in the UK that are ok?
And/or if anyone has made yoghurt, what king of milk did you use? US milk classifications are a little confusing.
And, any other UK dairy suggestions gratefully recieved

            Thanks,

            Baarb

Generally the higher the fat content the lower the sugar content.

I am not a cheese eater, but do take lots of yoghurt - it keeps the fat content of my diet up.

I like Total Greek Yoghurt - 10% fat - but there are other "Strained yoghurts" about. I flavour it with vanilla extract, add a little Splenda and eat the creamy mix with a few berries - fresh or frozen. I love it.

This is not for the early stages of Atkins - and the little fruit yoghurt pots on sale by the thousand are a complete no-no at any Atkins stage - they a full of sugar.

Labarum beat me to it, Baarb, Greek Yogurt is the best!!
I just add a little granulated splenda if I want it sweet, but often have it plain with a curry dish too!
I buy it from Somerfields and 100 grams is just about 5 carbs-worth.

Sometimes I put it in the fridge in a strainer bag (like the ones used to make jellies from cooked fruit) and it turns into 'yo-cheese'. I pour the liquid that drains out of it away but I suppose you could use that in cooking if you wanted too.

Here in Germany, Eli, I can but 1Kg (35oz) tubs of Turkish Yoghurt - 10% fat and 4% carb - indistinguishable from Greek Yoghurt and very cheap.

We have a large Turkish population here and I buy from the local Turk down the road. If you have such an ethnic shop near you (unlikely) try it out.

I can also get 500g jars of vanilla flavoured yogurt - about 3.5% fat and 15% carb - I mix 2Kg of Turkish with 500g Vanilla in a food mixer - it makes a nice mix that needs no sweetening and the carbs average out quite nicely low.

                    Thanks Labarum and Elizellen,

Just to double check that it is ok on the diary rung to eat yoghurt? Something you said, Labarum, made me think perhaps it's too soon?

I'll avoid those little pots with sugar, but plain greek or turkish yoghurt is ok?

It would seem so. Read this FAQ

And as I said the higher the fat, the lower the carb - but of course high fat means relatively high calories, and although we do not count calories on Atkins, they do count.

So, like cheese, yogurt in modest amounts.

                            Hi Ginette,

Your menu looks pretty good to me. Make sure you are measuring veg, carbs and cheese throughly - I'm not sure I did this rigorously enough whilst in induction, but it is important.

I am not 100% sure about labels, so hopefully someone else will be able to say more accurately, but I thought it was the case that you just can follow the carbs on the label. Is that right, anyone?
