    Re: Buddy List August 4-10

    First of all welcome!

11 pounds in 10 days is awesome! While Atkins is wonderful for shedding weight you are not going to be losing weight everyday. The weight loss the second week is hardly ever as great as the first week. Sometimes your body will need to pause for a bit before letting go of more weight. Sometimes when the weight isn't moving the tape measure is so take your measurements. You also did your cardio the other day and if this was the first time since inducting your body could be hanging on to a bit of water to help with the muscle repair.

Be patient Grasshopper. The weight didn't come on overnight and it isn't going to go with out a fight. Stay on plan by the book and the scale and tape measure will move again. You are worth it!

      Re: Buddy List August 4-10

      Welcome Britni!

Okay...read your intro. So kewl that your mom is doing this with you. I have to tell you that here on this board we go by Dr Atkins 2002 edition. By the rules of that book there are a couple of things you are eating that are not acceptable. I need to point that out to you so you know where our advice is coming from.

The tortilla wrap has to go. And the honey ham. You need 2 cups of salad veggies plus one cup other veggie from the acceptable list...everyday. I will find you a good post about the rules..Sherri has one. BRB...was like I wasn't even gone wasn't it...LOL....here it is...thanks Sherri!

      Before you begin:

      1. Read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition.

At the very least, read chapters 10 through 14. These chapters tell you how to do the diet, what to expect, and why the first 14 days are so important.

ADBB uses DANDR 2002 as its reference. Granted there are other publications by Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. but we like to do the diet as it was written by Dr. Robert C. Atkins because in our collective experience Dr. Atkins' diet is more effective than Atkins Nutritionals, Inc's version.

      2. See your physician.
Dr. Atkins recommended this himself. See your physician for a complete physical exam, including blood tests before beginning this or any other diet and exercise program.

Also take the Blood Sugar Symptom Test found in the book.

      3. Make a commitment.
Commit yourself to giving the 14 day Induction a fair shot. If you can't commit yourself to 14 days of following rules and eating the foods listed in the acceptable foods list, this diet might not be for you.

      4. Prepare your kitchen
If it's not on the list, remove it from your home. If you live with people who aren't on a low carb diet, then put your food(s) in areas separate from theirs. Also make sure you have low carb snacks available to you at all times, in case you get hungry.

      5. Recruit your family and friends.
You are about to embark on a completely new lifestyle. Getting the support of your family and friends will help you through this. Be frank with them and tell them your intentions and that this is very important to you. If they have any doubts about this diet, ask them to read the book because knowledge is power.

      6. Keep the Induction Rules and Foods List handy.
Make two copies of these documents: keep one on your refrigerator at home and keep the other one on your person at all times. This will save you a lot of guesswork and worry when eating out or grocery shopping.

The Rules of Induction can be found here:
What are the Rules of Induction?

The Induction Acceptable Foods List can be found here:
What foods can be eaten on Induction?

      7. Read the entire label, including the ingredients.
Some foods have little carbs, but contain things like hydrogenated oils (trans fats) and sugar, which makes them unacceptable for Induction.

      8. Keep a food diary
It is of utmost importance to keep track of your daily carbohydrate intake to make sure you are not exceeding 20 net carbohydrates daily.

Some people keep a notebook journal. Others like to track their progress online.

      Here are some resources:
      An Atkins spreadsheet:
      http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=4570

http://www.fitday.com ---This is a free online service (registration required) that allows you to input your foods, track your exercise, etc.

      Carbohydrate Counters:
http://www.atkins.com ---The Atkins site has a downloadable Carb Counter.
http://www.calorieking.com ---This site has nutritional information for most foods and beverages.
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ ---This is the United States Department of Agriculture Nutrition Database.

      9. Exercise
According to Dr. Atkins "exercise is non-negotiable"! So get moving. Begin according to your level of fitness. Visit the Exercise Forum.

      10. Vitamin Supplements
These are also recommended by Dr. Atkins because many of us have poor nutrition and we need extra nutrients. Visit the Vita-Nutrient Forum.

*11. Weigh AND Measure Yourself on Day 1

Make sure you weigh and measure yourself before you begin this diet. Contrary to what we are lead to believe, the scale isn't the best tool for measuring weight loss (fat loss). It doesn't tell you how much muscle you gained. It doesn't tell you how much water weight you gained or lost. It doesn't tell you that you will fit into that pair of jeans.

      Tips for weighing:
      a. Weigh yourself at the same time of day under the same conditions. You can weigh "more" after a meal or after you drink water or you can weigh "less" after you exercise or have a bowel movement. So pick a time and stick to it. Likewise, clothing can also add on "pounds". So if you choose to weigh yourself wearing clothes, make sure you are wearing the same clothing or nearly the same clothing.

      b. Use the same scale. Scales differ slightly. So the scale in your doctor's office or at the gym might have you weighing more or less than the scale in your bathroom.

      Tips for measuring:
      a. You can measure whatever body areas you want: chest, waist, hips, thighs, upper arm, wrists and ankles. To make the measuring easier, you body landmarks like your belly button or a mole or scar, to guide your tape measure placement. For chest measurement, women can either measure under their armpits and/or under their breasts.

      b. Don't "pull" on the measuring tape because that will give you a false reading (and stretch the tape). The tape should be snug, but not tight.

      c. Don't suck in to make yourself smaller. Again, that will give you a false measurement.

Measuring tapes can be purchased at craft stores (the sewing section) for under $5.00. If you can't find one, you can use a piece of string. Just mark that string with a marker pen to indicate your "start" points". Or if you have an old belt, you can use that too.

Another good "measuring tool" is your clothing. Non-stretchy clothing like a dress shirt, jeans, or dress is the best thing to use. Stretchy fabric (like t-shirts or anything with spandex) will conform to your body as you shrink so you might not see the results. Try on this article of clothing periodically to see how you are losing inches.

Good luck to you on your 14 day Induction journey.

        Re: Buddy List August 4-10

 I'm going to go buy the book. All we've done is research and using a Cookbook with very short details of everything.

Bye-bye tortilla and honey ham!!! Is there anything else on my list that I shouldn't be eating? I guess I'll have to "Restart" tommorow. My mom got information that the tortilla's were okay from her friend who used them on Induction and has lost 15lbs. But I'd rather do it MY way which is STRICT/THE RIGHT WAY. Do you think that I will still be ketosis tommorow even though I had the tortilla's ? I am planning to have a chili for dinner that my mom made with an Induction recipe. (So many awesome recipes to help so it's not eggs, eggs and more eggs! LOL)

I have my measurements, etc. thanks to my Pt. So that's done and over with.

Is everything else I'm eating okay? It's hard for me to figure out cheese conversions.

It's also really frustrating because, although it's cool my mom is doing it with me, my mom really sucks at figuring stuff out. She just assumes anything is okay as long as it's no added sugar and low-carb. I try to tell her ONLY stuff on the list, which would mean NOT the tortilla, but she simply just doesn't "get" it. Maybe showing her this thread and forum will help her recognize it so she does it right with me.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am going to go buy the book tonight after work I think!

          Re: Buddy List August 4-10

Brittni...there are several versions of Atkins out there. The 2002 edition is a later one where he has refined some things and set things out ground rules for us to follow so we can all do this better. That is why the difference between here and what your Mom's friend said. We stay away from the processed low carb food. We call it frakenfood here. LOL! Buy the book...read it with your Mom. Print out the induction rule..post it on the fridge and let her know that is what edition your are following so you can get more support and answers here as well. 2 cups salad veggies...doesn't mean just lettuce and 1 cup from the other list ...everyday. And your water. You will be adding low carb tortillas back and whole grains back in eventually...but not soon. Follow that list for 2 weeks. NO CHEATS! Dedicate yourself to giving that gift of a clean induction...you are worth 2 weeks! Any more questions feel free to ask. I will be on later...DS's turn on the puter. You can do this!

            Re: Buddy List August 4-10

Thank you so much Elsie! You are so sweet.

We are running into town to get the book now. I did have a tortilla wrap sandwich (as in my original post for what I had for lunch yesterday) at my 3 p.m. snack today only because it's all I had packed and I'd rather keep my metabolism going; plus I already ate a tortilla today so tomorrow will have to be a complete fresh start.

As for questions -- what do you mean by "2 cups salad veggies...doesn't mean just lettuce and 1 cup from the other list ...everyday."? That didn't make sense to me. So, have 2 cups of salad (romaine is my pref.) and 1 cup of other veggies? Or more, or less? Really confused on that statement!

Other than that, no major questions thus far. I am just hoping that it works for me. Is it pretty much full-proof going to work if I stick to it?

Oh! I know... Cheese conversations. I'm having roughly 2-3 (70 cal) mozerella string cheese's a day... is that OK? too much, too little?

And I can have as much meat as I desire?

TIA! I'm sorry for so many questions and I know you probably just want to direct me to certain threads but I have read a lot and I'm a kind of girl who needs *people* not just reading to make me certain of an answer.

I really, really want this to work. I would LOVE to lose 15lbs by Sept. 5th. So... much. And NOT water weight, but actual lbs. I'm about size 11/13 right now and I would enjoy VERY much to be a happy, loose size 9.

            Bless you all!!!!

              Re: Buddy List August 4-10

Britini...you could have always just ate the inside of the tortilla ;^).

You have to eat 2 cups of salad veggies...it doesn't say 2 cups salad...so in other words if you look at the list of salad veggies in the book there are lots to choose from besides just lettuce. So you can have any or mixture of any of those on the list. So some romaine with sprouts and mushrooms and cucumber for example...2 cups of that or 1 cup and a cup of mushrooms. Plus you eat 1 cup other veggie from the other veggie list in the book....say 1 cup of broccoli.

Pretty fool proof so long as you do it by the book and don't justify little cheats or changing the rules to fit what you want it to be and stick to the limits set up by Dr A.

You can eat until satisfied...not until you are stuffed. Ideally you eat about 30%protein/5%carbs/65%fat during induction. www.fitday.com is a great site to enter your food in to give you an idea of how you are doing and in helping finding hidden carbs.

Even with the book the stickies are helpful as well so do give them a read as well. I think your weight loss goal is very reasonable. You seem to be very realistic in your goals! Good for you!

Evening all. Hiya Elsie. Hey Vanessa which academy/class you interested in? Got loads of experience(18 years) and as a superior I may be of some help. However if you want to do this solo then by all means. Qwik question though. What took you so long? Couldve easily had 5 to 8 years in the pension already. Hope all is going well with everyone. Things here are splendid. Making our rounds with county fairs( 3 of em) and day trips down the shore,(I love New Jersey, I just hate the taxes, congestion, etc...........) But you gotta love the Jersey shore. Found me some sugar freee ice cream on the boardwalk today, so I had me some. Choc/vanilla twist. Was good but not something I need daily. Mike i'm glad you resisted. All it takes is one and you'll be back up to where you were. Which would be a shame cuz you're doing well. Happy losing. Me shoulders and back of the neck are FRIED. As well as me forehead, me baldhead, me nose....OUCH!! Gonna have fun as me wife spreads on the ole aloe tonight. God Bless,Joe

Very true Elsie, I should have skipped the whole thing though since it was honey ham! I really just felt I needed the energy/fuel. However, it won't happen again and I've set my mom straight LOL.

Also, *shakes tush* we went and picked up the 2002 edition. So tomorrow should be an even better day then the past two.

15 lbs -- in a month, reasonable?! Wow, I thought I was wayyy over doing it! That makes me even more encouraged to do it (induction for the whole month of course)

Tonight for dinner we had Chilli. It was a one Elsie had recommended here. (Stick To Your Ribs Chili) I don't think we were supposed to have it b/c of the tomato sauce now b/c of Elsie's comment of no tomato juice? Can somebody clue me in? Ohhh boy... @_@

I know I need to read the book tonight. I will. It's just frustrating as I had thought all the recipes we collected were induction friendly.

Tomorrow's a new day. and 1 month will FLY by! So I know this will be a "piece of cake" (and mmm, it sure will taste/feel better than!) if I can just get the rules down to a T.
So I won't hesitate no more, no more

                              Hey bill-buddy!

                              P.S.
Um that fitday site says that a single onion (vedalia) is 21g carbs sauted with 3g fiber so that's 19g net carbs? IS THAT RIGHT?

(I know we can have 1 c. of onion - raw before cooked it's on the list so that's why the carb amount seems way off?)
So I won't hesitate no more, no more
                              It cannot wait I'm sure
                              There's no need to complicate
                              Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours
