The sodium level in most soda is relatively low but it will vary depending on the amount in the local tap water where they were bottled. about 30-40mg according to COKE back in the early 90s.

okay, so technically, going by the book, you really wouldn't have the choice to make because he says "sweetened with splenda", right?

i have to say i am enjoying this read. by doing it along with others, it is making me look even harder at the things i have been prone to just glance over. like the sodas. in my mind and for me, it just wasn't going to happen so i sped on to what was relevant.

if someone is tripleing up on it during the day and during induction, it could make a difference couldn't it? like i said earlier, i have seen menu plans that included at least 3 diet sodas in one day.

I know that soda in any form isn't nutritional in any way, but I admit that I do indulge once in awhile. I don't pig out on it, but sometimes I find that I want it so I'll have one. Maybe once or twice a week. I choose either Diet Rite or Caffeine Free Diet Coke. I do count the sweetener towards my daily allowance. Aspertame doesn't seem to have an effect on my scale but I am still wary of it.

The first time I did Atkins, I ate the bars and they did stall me. I wasn't crazy about the texture of them but I felt that I needed that sweetness once in awhile. Once in awhile turned into 3 times a day and I really screwed myself by eating them. This time I am not even looking at them on the store shelf! Never gain! If God wanted me to eat candy, he'd make it grow on a bush. JMO.

Diet pop is one of the things I'm missing most. I actually crave it. I'm one of those people who tried having all I wanted when I was on Atkins before and wondered why my weight loss was at a standstill. I wasn't going to believe that it was the culprit either, after all it was DIET. I endulged when I was on vacation but now I'm back on the water. But it's sure hard... there aren't even any foods I'm craving, but I feel like an addict about the diet drinks!

                Water for me now.

Just posting to let y'all know I'm keeping up with the reading. I'm enjoying everyone's posts. I've never been crazy about soda of any kind so I don't understand the addiction to it, myself. It doesn't even taste that good. Not like chocolate. lol And it has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. I don't have the book in front of me at work, but I know he says something about "a food that demands to be eaten everyday...." is something that you definitely have to avoid, or it's going to be your downfall.....something like that. Sorry, I don't have the exact quote. However, in my reading I also ran across my favourite quote which I'm now going to try to put in my siggy.

                    Re: Heidi's post

The food choices was one of the reasons why Atkins was very attractive to me. I was a low fat vegetarian and vegan for a number of years. Afterwards I began incorporating lean meats, but still staying low fat. So the veggie part of Atkins didn't bother me at all, because I was already eating those leafy greens and other vegs, with alittle meat on the side. But I did overeat the starchy carbs (potatoes, rice, pasta) because they were low fat.

Atkins allowed me to eat the "forbidden foods" ---cheeses, cream, butter, etc. Sure I didn't have to eat a barn's full of butter or a cellar full of cheese, but I had the ability to choose to eat these foods.

Now, I'm in the stage of the diet where I can eat potatoes and rice, but I don't. I figured out why they are eaten: they help to extend limited amounts of veg and meat, and they are also inexpensive. They typically have less fiber than a serving of a veg. they typically have less vitamins and nutrients than veggies. So nutritionally, they aren't all that.

The 64 oz plus 8 ounce for every 25 pounds overweight thing...... That is based on the fluid requirement formulas doctors use in hospitals. The human body has a certain fluid volume that must be kept at a constant in order to function. There are alot of formulas scientists have used to figure this out. But if you were to plug your weight into those formulas, the number of ounces will be equivalent to the rule of thumb.

It's sort of an overestimate because in hospitals, you typically aren't eating and you typically aren't doing things (like walking or running) to make you lose your body fluid volume. But since ketosis is a diuretic, that slight overestimation of fluid might not be a bad idea.

megs, do you think your feeling about potatoes and rice are common among those on the higher rungs and in maintenance?

i feel the same as you. i can have mashed potatoes now, i can have rice, but i just don't care for them now. i might eat a freach fry when i fix them for jack but there is no appeal there for me any more and i used to love french fries. when my mom asks me if i would like such and such, she will back it up with, oh i figure you can't have that can you. i have to keep to reminding her that it's not that i can't have it, it's i don't really care to eat that now. now if only i could get her to offer me a porterhouse instead of pie, i'd be one happy camper!

i am seeing it this type of thinking throughout the board. people at goal or very near to it, have changed their woe so much and for so long that they don't even give some a second thought.

sit down for this one. soda has slightly more sodium then the local water so 3 sodas sodiumwise would be no worse then 3 glasses of tap water!

All this talk about bars is doing alarming things to my head. I don't want the bars (I never eat them), but I remember the first time around and how quickly one occasional bar added up to several a day - and that's while eating normal meals! - and how I eventually binged on them. Bad memories. Yet there's a part in my brain that wants to go back to that "familiar" thing, though it's been over a year since my last binge. Heck, I actually even liked the bars, the texture and all. So I'm here to tell on myself, because written out, these addictive tendencies lose a lot of their power. Still... I suppose I will always have to be on guard, for the rest of my life.

Oh my word, you too, Megs? Wow, that's three of us right in this thread! It's absolutely beautiful to be able to eat what we eat now. Luxurious, glorious, scrumptious food: these terms could never describe low-fat anything!

Funny, I'm the opposite. I tend to eat the same thing every day, simply because I like it - as in, if it works, why fix it? LOL but I do vary my meals over periods of time. With me being single, it's not like anybody minds the repetitive meals, and it allows me to cook in large quantities and then forget about cooking altogether for the next week or two, just eating off what I made. Right now I'm eating turkey breast I made in the crockpot, it was four lbs. raw, I've been eating it since Friday and I'm not even halfway through.

Soft Drinks: not for me. Part of the whole sweetener deal for me - I stay away from artificial flavors. I used to think diet sodas were useful (at least the flavored waters) because they took the edge off hunger in between meals, since, like Heidi, I also don't snack. But the truth is, water (with a wedge of lime perhaps) does the job just as beautifully.

I haven't got the exact quote on me either, but when I read this it jumped out on me and I couldn't agree more. That's how you can tell something's not right... if it demands to be eaten. It's going back into slavery to food, and just like sugar, I know I can behave like an addict with a lot of things. In fact, right now I've got heavy cream in my fridge and I've been overusing it. Part of my brain wants to finish it off quickly so it's gone and then I don't have to deal with it any more. But "finishing it off" is a binge, way too much. So it'll stay where it is, and I'll learn self-control.

I know you didn't ask me, but it's certainly the truth for me. I'm not at goal yet, but I could incorporate some starches, yet I find it a waste. Doesn't seem worth it.
I want to be thin. I want to be a runner. Why can't I get it into my head that both things require work??

I saw Dr Atkins director of nutrition with him on a talk show way back and she was saying the sample menues were based on 150 pound females needs. Every answer to every specific question, like the amount of protein being eatten was based on 150 pound female. I'd say the 8 eight ounces was based on that too.

With 5,000 miles of extra blood vessels and the extra skin allowing for evaporation somebody 25 pounds over weight will need more fluid then somebody at normal weight.

Oh I'm glad to see others say I can but I don't. I don't cause in chapter on premaintnenance Dr Atkins says if a food was a trouble food for you before like pasta don't go there now. The folk who don't read the whole book miss that and when they get to OWL and a rung of a trouble food as a carboholic look out! Any food I used to consume in bulk like Diet Coke or corn on the cob or real mac and cheese is something I simply don't even get near. Since the Muellars low carb pasta is whole wheat and doesn't tasted exactly like the old pasta does i can limit that if i only cook 2 ounces cause waiting 20 min for more water to boil and then the 8 for the pasta to cook gives me almost 30 min to talk myself out of having a second serving of it just cause I want it!Knoiwing this I bulk cook meats and flax muffins, and veggies sauces and soups, but not anything else.
I know I'd eat the whole recipe if I make one of our low carb desserts so i stick to the single serving cooking stuff. you can't pig out on it if it is still raw unmixed ingredients.

I seriously doubt any one hear started out a big water drinker! I know I was a 24 can aday Diet coke drinker and man was it tough going cold turkey on that addiction. Use decide I'm saving money and having nothing but water from now on. After several days sugar free you will be surprized how water has a sweet taste to it. it has to do with the minerals in it that react with the tastebuds.I was so addicted can to mouth i actually had to buy a 6 pack of water and use it. once I'd drunk it I refilled the cans and kept them 1/2 full in the freeze so i could have a can of cold water whenever. i eventually stopped needing the can and just drank from a glass.

If you drink your soda with a straw drink your water with a straw too.

If you do it for a week you will be surprized how weird your soda tasates. It is like the veggies as your tastebuds resensitize to small amounts of sweetness and you notice the veggies traste better you will see the water tastes better too. I know i had a caffeine free DC in May 2004 as part of my jumping off the wagon pig out ( yep diet coke and high carb foods i know no logic in that one) and it tasted wierd burned my throat and left a funny after taste each swallow. needless to say i had water the rest of my pig out days just cause it tasted to me better.

It comes down to you have decided to change your ways cause you want to be smaller and/or healthier by doing Atkins. just as we can't say i'll do the eating part but not the exercise part we can't say I'll do Atkins but I'm drinking my soda not water cause then you aren't doing Atkins you are doing your own plan like that guy that altered Atkins to create south beach. If you are going to do Atkins do Atkins and in 14 days celebrate your unaddicted life as a healthier smaller begining to do Atkins person.
