  • Re: 2007 Read The Book Challenge

Dragging in to say I FINALLY got done reading and the homework. I'm gonna have to run away from home (from the phone, really) to ever get to read in peace. People KNOW I hate to talk on the phone, and they used to respect that, but not now. I am the youngest of 10 living kids, but I am the head of the family, nonetheless. Now, since my brother's brain surgery, my sister's brain tumor and this week she's in the hospital with her heart, and another brother having I-don't-know-what-kind of health 'situation,' I am fielding calls day and night. They can't make a move without running it past me to see if I think the doc knows what he/she/they are doing. Sheesh! At least they remember I am just recovering from my own surgery.

    Okay--through whining!

    Sunny!

Just finished homework part 3. I really enjoyed reading this section b/c every now and then, I need a reminder that, yes, I AM an emotional eater and I'm not lazy just because I'm overweight. I have to make better choices and eat when I'm hungry, not because I just feel like I should eat.

i've got you x'ed in bio! i'll update the chart in the morning

did i ever tell y'all about this little (not so much) boy that i knew? lol that's pretty vague, isn't it?
anyway, i was teaching a sunday school class, the kids were 1st grade, i think. i was teaching them and we were talking about the garden of eden and what adam and eve had to eat, how they tended the garden and so on. this little boy, right out of the blue, threw his arms wide open and in a very loud voice said "FOOD IS MY LIFE!". i didn't know if i should laugh or what. this little boy was already obese. i've seen him as an older teen and things are no better. it still appears that food is his life.
how sad is that? i knew both his parents. mom was obese and her family line shows this trend. his dad was of normal, proper, healthy weight and was a runner. very odd couple. they no longer are married and i often wonder if the weight played a part in the split.

That's interesting, Jimmie. Makes me wonder as well. It wouldn't surprise me if weight was an underlying cause of other issues (whether they realized it or not) that may have played a part in the split.

Here's what I got out of it:
                      1. All overweight people are not simply lazy slobs
                      2. I am an emotional eater who needs to put that foremost in my mind when I choose
to eat. I'm going to ask myself "Am I hungry, or do I just want it".
                      3. Page 278 - Teach yourself, lecture yourself and habituate yourself - great words to
live by on a daily basis. Positive affirmations and understanding.
                      4. Page 281 - in reference to a goal weight and not being a perfect "10" he says:
"But you can make it the best body possible if you don't fall into the trap of
demanding a perfect figure and weight loss schedule that exists only in your head"

By re-reading this chapter it's clear I'm an atkineer for life. Yes I slip on occasion, yes my weight fluctuates, yes I have fat days, yes I am human. By following the Atkins program I know I'm eating healthily and exercising a few times a week as well. These are new habits that have helped me keep my weight off.

                      All done with homework too!
Wah, I'm not on the Part III homework done list!

Ditto! I did exactly that. I'm not sure I got past the first page, though. I woke up with the book on my chest at almost midnight--AGAIN! I couldn't tell you right now what the first chapter is even about, so I know I'll be reading it again!

I am a member of a large church, with about 200 kids in attendance at any given time. I attend the early service, then go to Sunday School, and then at the 11 o'clock service, I sing in the choir. Being in the choir loft gives me a really good view of the 525-seat sanctuary. The kids get up a lot and leave to go to the bathroom or whatever fidgety kids do. Every week, I see several obese, but beautiful children, that I just want to try to do something for while they are still young. One girl in particular does not have family members that are even overweight, but at about age 8, you can tell her clothes come from the adult racks. She must weigh 150 pounds and is short. She has such a beautiful face and is a sweet little girl. But, what can you do??? I don't know her parents well at all--just to speak to.

I keep thinking there must be something I can do for the children while they are still young, but don't know what, just yet. I don't have any experience with childhood obesity. I was a skinny kid in a large family of skinny people. My own children were always underweight and my son continues to be. (my daughter passed away three years ago). What to do?? what to do??

                            Sunny!

I just finished reading Chapter 24 on diabetes. It seems obvious to me that the reason Dr. A stresses exercise and veggies so much in the 2002 book is his interest in diabetes prevention. He even said he planned to write a book about it. I'm curious as to why he was so interested in diabetes. After all, he was a cardio-vascular specialist. Sunny, are there any clues in his autobiography?

I don't remember. Diabetes does not run in my family and I have never had any symptoms, though for 10 years, I have had blood work every 90 days, so I have never had any reason to be much interested in that part of his books or this WOE/WOL. Possibly because diabetes has so much to do with heart health??? I'm pretty sure he did write a book about diabetes, though.

I read that book from the library, and I'm kicking myself because I just placed a BIG book and DVD order with amazon.com and didn't order that book (biography) while I was getting free shipping!
