OK, that's all I can write right now as my dinner is ready. Be back to post more...

i always took it to mean net carbs even though it does not say 'net'. net carbs is what we counted because as dr. atkins said, they are the carbs that count. i never thought to change midstream meaning why would we count net carbs while doing induction and then switch to another way of counting? i don't think we do or should.

my best shot for your question:
for me, the purpose of listing the items with the measurements of 1/2 cup, cup, ounces, etc. was to give us the visual of what can be added, in a general order of when the food should be added.

Sloppy editing, imo. I don't know how DANDR was written, but I know how my professors write their books. They are the ones writing the important stuff (e.g., how to derive the equation for <insert nerdy term>)... but if a list is needed... or if a table needs to be put together... or anything else "work intensive" that someone can do without a lot of brain power... that is normally done by students or similar slaves.

Putting together a list of foods with 5 g of carbohydrate doesn't require a lot of brain power. I'm sure Dr. Atkins had better things to do than to look up how many raspberries make 5 g, for example. That person who made the list probably forgot that net carbs are the "carbs that count" in the 2002 plan... and instead used total carbs. I'm sure someone checked what is written in the manuscript before the book was send to the publisher... but I don't think that person (or persons) also checked if 1/4 cup of raspberries is indeed 5 net carbs... or only 5 total carbs. I know my professors wouldn't!

For me, measuring 1/4 cup is a bit difficult, so I am using a kitchen scale instead. (I can't find measuring cups in Germany, so to measure a cup I use a 250 mL drinking glass... and I also have one of those jugs that measures up to 1 L... but it's impossible to measure 1/4 cup in it.) For raspberries for example, 100 g have about 5 net carbs. But 100 g of rasberries is a lot, imo, so I never ate 5 net carbs of them... but more like 2-3 net carbs. To "fill in" the difference, I just added some veggie carbs.

I agree with Jo about this one. You can see in the book that weight measurements are rarely used (except nuts, I believe, but those are counted in pieces too). It is cups of vegetables, cups of berries, tablespoons of cream, 8 fl. oz glasses of water and so on. I will not write the details here (those interested can PM me), but I have been told by people who worked with Dr. Atkins that cups were used because it was believed it will make things easier for Atkineers. If someone prefers to weigh stuff... that's fine... as long as one eats not more than 20 net carbs on Induction, adds not more than 5 net carbs per week on OWL, etc., etc., etc.

          Good for you, Jo!

i have 1/2 loaf left of my bread but it made it's way to the freezer this morning.
I won't give names here, but an Atkineer was saying a few weeks ago that she stills has LC bread she ordered online in 2004 (or something like that) in her freezer. I doubt she plans to eat it though... lol.

The 2nd part is done for me. I actually read Ch. 21 (The Psychology of Weight Loss) last night. It's one of my favorite chapters in DANDR.

Speaking of weight versus measure and being a former WW attendee, I prefer to weigh most foods. I put the weights in on Fitday and it tells me what my carbs, etc. are. I've figured out how much a cup of the different greens weigh, making it so much easier to figure out how much I'm eating. But, I pretty sure I've been eating 20 grms of carbs, not 20 net grams So I need to rectify that. I'm pretty well back to normal Induction foods now, so that's good.

Finished part two, found it a bit hard, had to do several chapters tonight to reach target. Found a term I keep repeating now from chapter 15. Carb Creep, decided I am a guilty of being a carb creeper!

i have finished chapter 18 and 19 and thus completes part 2.
as i read about the ways to be prepared, i was thinking about the I Am Worth It Challenges that i have been in and led. at least one of the challenges addressed the issues of being prepared and also eating in the real world. i'm not sure which of the challenges addressed those two things ... i may look through them to know more exact or you can, if you are interested.

i've put many, many custom foods into my fitday and sometimes i find that either i should have put a weight in or i should have put an actual measurement. i use fitday as a tool though, so i don't get real upset if the numbers are off.

i think i addressed this a couple pages ago but i'll make sure....

this was a long part to get done in a week, meaning we were shooting to have it read and finished today, saturday. however, people work, travel, have families to take care of and i knew it was going to be rather hard for some. it was hard for me and i felt like i was reading all week!

but, here is the good news. part 3 is much shorter so just keep reading your part 2 and go right into part 3. we are shooting to have part 3 done next saturday.

What an appropriate ending for Part 2~~Eating In The Real World. Very helpful & informative chapter~thank you Dr. Atkins. One sentence in particular really stood out for me & is now on sticky notes in several places throughout my house.

"I believe the best way to overcome temptation is not with willpower, which is often in short supply, but with our brain power, a potentially unlimited resource."~~ Dr. Atkins

Looking forward to Part 3 as Chapter 21 is my absolute favorite.

glenda likes chapter 21 ... i'm partial to 22. and how about that! we'll be reading about exercise just in time for the november challenge sign up threads! anybody think that was planned?????

Just finished Part II - whew - good thing it is a gloomy day here!

I really enjoyed this part, how he talks about getting over cheats, binges, etc...just keep going. Also the 'wrong way to do atkins'; and how to deal with 'naysayers'

I felt excited to be reading about Maintenance; the thought of actually getting there.

One line that I liked, while he was describing a woman who got to maintenance because of her 'intense motivation', he says "You need to have within yourself that same strength of conviction".

                                good morning, challengers!

for the record, i don't kick anyone to the curb. a gentle nudge but no kicking!

yesterday while biking, i finished chapter 20 and then read 21 before bed.

i'm a bit more metabolically challenge than i was in 1975. who would have thunk it????? i kid... yes more challenged but it's no secret that as we age, things can tend to slow down some.
                                i'm older
i'm fully, undeniably, no questions asked in menopause. what part of me wasn't there in april 2008 got pulled in with my surgery.
so there is no question about the fact that my metabolism ain't what it used to be.
however, dr a assures me that this is not a doomsday diagnosis... i can still lose those pesky pounds.

one thing that struck while reading chapter 21, that i never paid attention to much because it didn't apply to me, was the role of the thyroid. i am waiting for a dr. appointment and the results of my most recent blood work but i'm going to ask the dr about my thyroid. now, it's not that my weight loss has come to a scretching halt or anything like that but it is the symptoms that dr. a wrote:
In fact, sensitivity to cold is one of the first signs that you may have a sluggish thyroid.

which include the aforementioned sensitivity to cold, as well as weight gain or inability to lose weight, hair loss, fatigue and lethargy, depression, dry skin, chronic constipation, poor nails, poor memory and elevated cholesterol levels.

                                sensitivy to cold... check
                                hair loss... check
                                fatigue.... check
                                dry skin... check
                                poor memory.... check

some of the others are questionable:
poor nails... fingers okay, toes not so much
elevated cholesterol levels... remains to be seen, will find out thursday. my total cholesterol was above 200 at last check but my HDL was really good so i wasn't too worried
depression.... yeah, cause i'm cold, have poor memory, dry skiin, hair loss yadda yadda.

anyway, i read this part with more interest this time around and i'm sure i'll be asking my dr. about things when i see him.

in chapter 21, i have marks on every page! some are scribbles but i managed to make them out.
on page 277, under the heading of Emotional Eating [page 276], i have a note stating "i don't like he listed this first" and this is in reference to the very first thing he states as a "practical response":

Treat yourself to an acceptable food. This isn't the best answer because it reinforces the idea that eating is a way to remedy emotional pain. But at least it won't leave you with the guilt of a bad binge to deal with on top of everything else.

i just don't think it great to list that as the first practical thing to do. he even states it isn't the best answer so why put it first? at least it said "acceptable food"
