Well, we don't have much sun in Bremen. We're at a latitude of about 53 degrees. But even when I was in Romania, my parents never had anything against me going out whenever I wanted for as long as I wanted (well, almost ). I mean, I was riding the bike for hours... and the only warning they ever gave me was to watch out for cars.

Do you know Bucky Covington's song, A Different World?

I've also taken note of Dr. Atkins' nutritional info. We don't take multivitamins in our house but individual vitamins according to Dr. Oz's recommendations, and I also take Udo's Choice oil, probiotic capsules and digestive enzymes.

I've also noted what people put in their grocery baskets! I love to compare with the foods I get, mine are so healthy!! I love it! ...continuing with part 4....

Dr. Oz?? For recommendations on supplements to the Atkins diet??? I love Dr. Oz's TV show and have enjoyed his books but keep in mind that his eating recommendations are low fat and very high carb with lots of whole grains and legumes/beans.

The nutritional supplement needs for people following a low-carb WOE are different which is why the supplement info in Chapter 23 is different from what Dr. Oz recommends for the typical USDA high-carb, low-fat diet.

In addition to such things as citrus bioflavonoids (we don't have much citrus until the later rungs), L-carnitine is involved in fat transport which works in collaboration with chromium and CoQ10 to mobilize fat (among other things). Along with basic nutrient supplementation, Dr. Atkins' focus is on recommending nutritional supplements that play a role in regulating blood sugar and insulin as well as burning fat (p. 303). Dr. Oz's focus is on a different audience (not low-carb folks).

at the sake of making a slight hijack.....

i do know his song and relate to it very well.
we have a few stores that are closed on sunday, most which are christian based/owned stores, like Hobby Lobby. growing up, nothing was open except maybe a gas station or two . [tying this in with the topic at hand......] this means we just use to get out and do more as kids. we didn't have video games or computers and the only time we were inside was when it was raining .... and maybe not even then as we played in the rain if there wasn't any lightening.

i love the comparison of the shopping carts too. i feel so much healthier just standing in line!

sorry to say, i do not know about dr. oz. i must live in a cave. is he on tv in the afternoons or morning? i just don't watch much besides the news channels during that time.
by "individual vitamins" do you mean that what you supplement with is different say from kids, spouse, others in the householf? for example, you would take a formula for being female while a spouse would take something designed for a male?

i did finish chapter 24 and started chapter 25 last night before actually turning out the light.
yeast.... something i noted in my back at one point is that i needed to "check for this". i'm still thinking it might be something i need to physically check into it. sounds like a big maybe in there. lol

i was a bit , i don't know the word.... feeling fat i guess, as he mentioned his patient who was 5' tall and weighed 134 pounds. this patient set her goal at 118. why did i feel fat? because i am exactly as that patient, 5' tall and yesterday was 134. i consider goal for me to be 130. i've been, at my lowest, 120, and i know for a fact that i would not be able to maintain 118. i couldn't maintain 120 very well.

oh well.......... i'm still happy in my skin.

Jimmie, Dr. Oz was a very popular guest for years on the Oprah show. He as written several books, the most famous being YOU: On A Diet and is behind the Realage.com website. He now has his own show (started about a month ago) that airs on the Fox television stations (morning and afternoon here).

He has lots of useful real life health info and advice, is very entertaining and loves to cover embarrassing topics that people are afraid to ask about. He is not a good source of advice and info for low carbers though. (IMNSHO ) HTH

i also have no doubt that some people might have thought she was anorexic. at 120, i had people telling me that i needed to stop losing, i didn't look well.

i have finished part 4. rereading those final pages made me think way back to when i first became a member here. i remember that i was looking for people who were doing atkins, i was looking for cyber companionship for the journey i was on. i came here and never left. adbb has certainly grown since then and has become a part of the 'spreading the word' the dr. atkins spoke about.

i liked reading about the heart healthy way of living too. we really are doing good things for our bodies and while we're doing it... we're losing weight!

I agree Jo -- I wish I would have known about Atkins before my husband had his heart problems....it would have saved us the emergency triple bypass, stents and ICD he now has. After having him in a coma for 5 days I never want to go through anything like that again.....maybe that's another reason I want to succeed on this - my dad's side have heart problems and my mom's side has cancer issues. I've dealt with cancer already and I certainly don't want to deal with heart issues.

I'm thankful for you and the other mods who came and never left - you've certainly made my journey easier - when you know you can get the correct information when you ask a question of one of you it is comforting. And when you have cyber friends who are living the Atkins way and dealing with weight problems on a daily basis it is very helpful.

Speaking of Dr. Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen,
He is not a good source of advice and info for low carbers though.
I'm in a little bit of disagreement. Dr. Atkins plan is based on how humans used to eat when there was no processed food. We were hunters and gatherers, eating mostly plant material, meat/fish when it could be caught, fruit and nuts when they were available. In order to eat, we had to move, humans had no choice. Now we go to the store, buy what we want, sit down, eat what we want, sit some more..at work or play...well, you get the picture I'm sure. Dr. Oz does discuss low carb plans on his website but leans more towards vegetable proteins over meat. Personally I like my meat way too much to give it up! But, I find over the years I've kind of lost my taste for beef (except ground beef) and tend to go with chicken and fish. Sometimes if we eat out, I'll ask for a steak, but quite often am disappointed in the cooking/tenderness. So chicken it is!

by "individual vitamins" do you mean that what you supplement with is different say from kids, spouse, others in the householf? for example, you would take a formula for being female while a spouse would take something designed for a male?
No, we take individual doses of specific vitamins, ie, 1000mg of D3, 800mg of Vitamin E, Co-enzyme Q10, etc., etc. What we take seems to have worked for us for the last 10 years or so, expensive mind you, but we're worth it. We also use a 3,6,9 essential oil, an adult blend probiotic and digestive enzymes. If I feel a cold coming on, I immediately double up my probiotics and enzymes, and that knocks the oncoming virus right out of me. We're also very aware of "overdosing" on vitamins, why waste your money, right?

yeast - my DH was actually treated for a yeast overgrowth before he was diagnosed with Intermittent Cerebellar Ataxia. This was about 7 years ago. We changed our diet back then, cutting out sugar and white flour products, and he was also taking something from the Homeopath that was supposed to help, can't remember what it was. I'm not sure it helped him tho'. Interesting reading

Well, that's me for tonight, gotta get to bed!
