Yes, you can have wheat bran and it's much easier to find than flax meal. It's called either Wheat Bran or Unprocessed Wheat Bran and it's in the natural foods aisle of my local Kroger. Yes, it is acceptable -- the three fibers you can for constipation problems are psyllium husks, flax seed or meal, and wheat bran. I much much prefer the wheat bran. I add 1 tablespoon to the Mock Danish and it gives it a less-eggy, more grain/bread taste. I use it as breading, mixed with pork rinds, to cut back on that salty-pork taste. And I use it every morning as a hot cereal. Whatever recipe you have for flax, you should be able to substitute some or all of it with wheat bran.
And the even better news? It is FAR lower in calories than flax. Flat has 763 calories per cup, wheat bran has 125. Per tablespoon, each should be counted as 1 carb.
