who was it that asked about using a step for this? sal, i think it was you and somebody else.

i wanted to know if you guys were using a step. have you done that yet? i have a step stool that i bought a long time ago for our grandaughter to use and lo and behold it is just the height of a stair step. i have used it for some flights in the past couple of days. my experience so far is that i can last longer but i don't feel i am geting as much of a work out. my mind tells me this is because of gravity. as i climb up the stairs, i naturally have gravity pulling me but not so much by using the stool. i wondered if you had the same experience.

Jimmie, I've used the step at home. It's one of those Rebock steps that you can add height to as needed. I found that it is easier compared to real stairs, so I just make mine really tall (3 blocks high) and I try to step up as fast as I can to simulate running upstairs. I get pretty sweaty!! Otherwise, it's not much fun for me and not too hard of a workout.

I finally finished Petronas Towers and I'm moving on to Canada! O Canada!! I hope to be done with CN tower by Friday.

CONGRATULATIONS BIO!!! i love seeing you guys finish a climb!

that was my experience. it wasn't as hard. i may opt to do some of the flights that way but i'll interlace them with the regurlar stair climbing. it would be great for someone just starting out, though, that maybe couldn't climb the stairs so good.

Interesting you should ask that Jimmie... I was about to ask everyone "how" they climbed their stairs... with exercise apparatus, a plain step or just regular flights?

It was me to ask originally... and I thought about buying a step. I'd have to order it from the internet so it'd take a little time to arrive. Actually, I put the acquisition off though, because of my knee. Happily that is alot better now and the CAT scan seemed to be fine (gotta take it back to docs for his final ok though). Anyway... I'm beginning to think of getting a step again.

For now I just do the regular flights as they crop up in my life, never taking lifts (elevators) though. I have recently done a few extra too to try and speed up Mont Blanc, but it gets boring running up and down the stairs (not to mention hoping the neighbours don't think I'm crazy when I go up and down the garden steps!!)

Is it irritating when using a step that you have to step down again, after just one step up?

sal, i got my step stool at walmart. it's a sturdy little plastic stool and cost me probably lsee than $4.00. now i know you probably don't have a walmart right round the corner but i wanted you to know that mine was a simple thing. it is the heigth of a step and has a black rubber piece on top so you don't slip.

i climb my flights by segmensts. i will do 10 or 12 and then rest for a couple minutes or do crunches or something, then do 10 more and keep repeating this process till i've climbed all i want to do that day. if i only have 30 or so (like the last buildings i just finished) i do them all at once. ie: i did the 21 flights for the milennium dome in one set.
the day i did the 220 was 10 then rest 2 minutes, 10 then rest and so on till i had all 220 done.

when i did use the step stool the other day, i stepped up with one foot then the other and then back down, a 1 up 2 up 3 down 4 down count. every 15th step up was 1 flight done. i had my trusty pennies in hand so it was easy to count and keep track.

            • Re: PLEDGING FLIGHTS *** A Stair Climb Challenge

I've found that the more continuous stairs climbed without turning around and going back down, the harder my heart will be pumping at the turning point.

Generally, I just count going up stairs either at home (2-story plus basement) or at work (flights run from sublevel C to roof above 4th floor), and never individual steps encountered here and there. That would be too much tracking work!

Anywho, today I decided to see if I can get in 50 instead of the typical 20 or so, or maybe more, by going up until winded and then on the way down, getting a leg & heart rest while adding a new exercise. There's continuous handrails on both sides of the office building staircase, except for one side on the landings. I can partially lift my weight with my arms and lightly go down the flight repositioning the hands every 3 steps. So I get in some upper torso work that is badly needed.

              Anyone else ever do this?

BTW, I've got 45 in today already, so I'm going for more. Maybe I can reach my summit fast like Jimmie48!

susan, i am so proud of you for increasing your flights! so proud!!!!

i only have one hand rail and it's not really attached to wall in a way to hold much. you're so creative to use the downward motion as an exercise.

did i say i was proud of you? I AM!!!

Awwwww, shux.... You're making me blush. It is kind of like doing parallel bars on a decline. The only thing I have to worry about, as these are very strong rails, is other people on the staircase. I did some more with my last bathroom & water run, and decided to go up the other side of the building because it's less traveled. I don't want to be seen exercising on the stairs, much less monkeying along the rails on my way down!! LOL

Edited to note I got 70f in at work today!
