  • Re: Looking for C25K buddy?

I have had heavy periods too all through this pre menopausal stage of my life. I have been trying to live with them but they do feel draining at time. My doctor did mention scraping at one time but I am trying to ride it out. So far so good. I eat plenty of iron though, every day.

And then there are likely a lot of hormonal things going on with our bodies that are far less visible that are causing changes probably related to how our bodies react to food. I keep telling myself to not be so hard on me - if the weight thing does not quite follow plan. I am making running and the other exercises that I have started to do more of the focus. Because I can control how many minutes I run - I cannot always control the fact that my body is going to go into a stall (or worse) for no good reason . I am getting more fit. But I walked up seven flights of stairs today and I was pretty much out of breath - so I have more to do.

I am glad to hear you are eating more maintenance food Mitzi because I can really do a good hurl with my under arm here. And I have some really solid flax muffins available for ammunition

Speaking of running - I did my first of week seven today. Not very fast but quite enjoyable. The sun was just coming up and it was great outside - only paper delivers out and about. I have started to have worries about winter and how much harder it is going to be to get running done.

      Hi, Liv and Quo

Just got back from the doc - well, it's not fibroids. My uterus is enlarged because of endometriosis (sp?) of the uterine walls. Not really a big deal, he said... that can wait until I'm either sick of dealing with the pain (it's not too bad right now), or if the periods are too heavy.

What he is concerned with is a big cyst on one of my ovaries. I actually have one on each of my ovaries, but one of them is small enough that he's not concerned. The other one, however, is fairly big. So today he ordered some blood work (CLA - screens for cancer, but is not totally accurate) and I go back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound to see if the size has changed any. If it starts to get smaller, we'll just play the watching game. If it's bigger and the CLA comes out with a high positive, we'll most likely yank my plumbing. So, I'm in limbo for 2 more weeks.

      Isn't getting older grand?

Oh dear more questions than answers there. I hope things work out with the cyst.
Yup getting older has its own charms. Now they say we are supposed to have accumulated some wisdom to be able to deal with it. I am not even sure about that most of the time.

Oh Mitzie! I'm so sorry. I had a breast cancer scare a few years ago and remember what that was like. I hope everything comes out squeaky clean.

Well that was a slow one. Just one of those days. I did not try to push myself. But it went fine. Next one is longer.
How many minutes are you running per week now Quo?

              Hi, Liv and Quo

              Thanks for being here, friends.

Today I drove to the track, and it was the first time that I have run since Friday of last week. I was really, really slow but cut myself some slack as it had been so long, and I am still dealing with TOM. But since TOM had slowed a bit, and I start working long shifts tomorrow, I really needed to get a run in. I am so glad that I went, because it felt great to be able to pull it off (even though it was slow!)... I do love how I feel after a run. And today's was a long one - 40 minutes.

Liv, you mentioned stairs the other day. I took my son to the local Bass Pro Sporting Store, and it is multileveled with stairs. There weren't even that many of them, yet my heart rate got right up there by the time I reached the top.

I do know that I am more fit now, though - yay! Last year during both my annual gyn check up and my annual physical with my GP, my blood pressure was high at 140's over 90's. This time, it was 100/54... doc was amazed and praised me repeatedly for the weight loss and improvement in blood pressure. Felt good.

I ran, ran, ran, ran. I love the fact that my endurance is better. One of the running books I read earlier said that it is best to focus on your strength whatever that my be. Mine is definitely distance. Speed - not so much.
I was tired when it ended and when I walked the last part it was strange. It was like I my thighs were vibrating. I cannot explain it.

I had enough energy to go swimming after. Running seems to give more than it takes. I am not a good swimmer. I have a froggy stroke that my daughter thinks is just barely one grade better than dog paddling. I love it though. It is a hot day here so it was nice to cool down in the pool.

                On to week eight.

I only ran 4 days this week but OMG!!! Tonight was my long run and the guy I'm seeing called me and I was running and talking and all of a sudden I thought I got disconnected. So I pulled out my cell to check and... I went over. My 45 minute run was just seconds shy of 51 minutes!

BTW: talk about increased endurance. Asthmatic me talking on the phone for 30 minutes of a 50 minute run. You two have helped me change my life in ways I can't even express.

I seem to feel stronger after the long run. It was the same today. Just flew through it. (Well you know - as much "flewing" as get from a middle age, slightly over weight lady who just started to run (or exercise period) some months ago)

Started C25K today... no idea what the acronyms you guys use mean, but it was a good first day I found the podcasts that are out there and used my iPhone to tell me exactly when to speed up and slow down.

                        Hi, Liv and Quo

                        and Paul

You 2 are doing so well - yay! I'm very proud and inspired by the both of you. Thanks

Well, today was the last day of my open till close shifts at the boutique! Woot!! I have a day off tomorrow, and I can't wait to get to the track to run. It's been FOREVER (since last Thursday!) since I've run, and that always makes me nervous as to whether I will be able to get the whole 3 miles done. So far, so good... hopefully it will go well. In fact, I know it will - I'm wayyyyy too hard-headed to give in before the 3 miles are up, no matter how tough it is.

Paul, I'm guessing that the acronyms you speak of are Liv and Quo's reference to OHR. OHR stands for One Hour Runner, and the D stands for Day and W stands for week. After completing the C25K program, they are both now doing the One Hour Runner program. I have completed C25K as well, but am not formally following the OHR program. I'm just running.

I hope that you find that you love running as much as we do. It's something I never thought that I would do in a million years, and if fact, my husband and mother still kinda roll their eyes at the fact that I run... like I have no business doing it, and am just asking for an injury. To that, I say .

Ahh, gotcha. Thanks. I used to run a LOT (4-5 miles a day, minimum) but got really severe stress fractures and gave it up (and conversely started the road to where I am now). I'm going to actually stick to the C25k program so we'll see if I get there by the end! I do worry that given my size, the pounding is going to be too much. We'll see.

Hi Paul! I totally understand about worrying about the pounding. I walked for awhile before even starting the C25K because I was worried about weak ankles and it gave them time to toughen up a bit. Don't hesitate to repeat weeks if you need to and definitely get your shoes assessed if you haven't. There were some wonderful shoes for heavier runners when I was looking for mine. Most had way too much cushioning for me but I was amazed at just how many good shoes there are out there for the not supper skinny race ready crowd.

Hi Paul. So what made you come back to running?

The great thing about C25K is that it makes you build up slowly to help you avoid stress. And you take many days off to heal and recuperate - by running 3 times a week. I really agree with Quot's advice - shoes are everything. Make sure you have some that will give you the kind of cushioning you need. And if possible find good surfaces to run on. I try to get most of my run in on dirt surface which has a lot of give. Good luck to you.

I actually do treadmill running, it's just too hot for me outside right now I like the alternating days, it gives me a chance to strength train. My core body strength sucks, as does my flexibility. Day 1 wasn't too bad for me, so I'm hopeful I can keep it up.
