whereami, so sorry about the pain .. have you tried ice instead of heat? Ice is great for inflammation of all kinds. In fact, using the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, elevation) will cure most everything! Also, contrary to popular belief, stretching is not what its cracked up to be. In fact, never ever stretch cold muscles. If you feel the need to stretch, then stretch lightly after 1/2 mile jog or so .. giving your muscles time to warm up. Personally I never stretch, but that's just me. I see runners stretching before races all the time and think to myself "good luck with *that!"
The best advice is to stop running until the pain is gone. Pain is the only way our bodies have to tell us "hey you, you're overdoing it, so knock it off already!"
