  • Re: Its time to resurrect the COOL RUNNING thread!

I'm determined to be a part of this thread I've just started my own running program, my brother is a runner and a personal trainer (how did I end up with the bad genes???) so he helped me put together a plan to get me running. I never heard of the couch to 5k program before it was posted here, and it's almost identical to what my brother has me doing, He helped me do it before I moved away from home he was training me for a 5k and of course I move away for a few years and I forget what a gym is, lol. Anyway tonight I alternated 5min of walking with 2min of running for about 40 min total. I get to do this until I'm completely comfortable with it then I do 5min and 3min, He said since I was up to 3 miles at a time a few years ago, that my body should get back into it quickly, I hope he's right, cos I gotta tell ya, i was totally outta breath and beat red when i got home tonite. Wish me luck, and thank you all for being such great inspiration!!!

Ok, so here's the thing. After reading all these amazing and inspiring posts about running, I have a question. Keeping in mind, I'm 56, I would like to start running (again). I used to run about 30 miles a week when I was in my 30's. I have used the treadmill to walk/jog in the past but had problems with my knees, so it kinda put me off. A few weeks ago, I started walking 2 hydro pole spaces, then jogging 1 hydro pole space. It felt pretty good too. I found out tho' that I can't take the beastie with me, cause I end up dragging him along, so I think I'll take my Ipod and go by myself, starting today.

Do you folks have any "special" advice for someone my age, about "starting" a running program? I tried downloading the Podcast from Robert Ullrey's site, but can only access week nine. I'm am very aware of my body's "well-being", especially having hurt my knee on the treadmill, so I will be "tuned in" to what's going on. At work, I stand all day, so there won't be any chance of crashing onto the couch after my exercise time.

Send your thoughts and any ideas you might have ok? thanks loads, everyone.

      Suzanne

Whereami - thanks. It is nice to hear that I inspire someone. It looks to me like you run faster and longer than I do so I am trying to tail you here
Katrina Welcome - nice to have another person here. And yes it gets easier. When I started running last year I could not do one minute without being exhausted
Fancy - love your strength guy I am getting close to fifty and if I am not mistaken Betty is already there but looking better than ever. So when it comes to running age is not hindrance. Knees have to be respected though. My advice would be get a pair of running shoes fitted for your feet. This is absolutely a must. And then try to find some paths where you avoid running on concrete. I do a combination of dirt, grass, asphalt and a bit of concrete (side walk) that is unavoidable. Those threadmills are not for me either. I think I overdo it on them and last winter I ended up with a shin splint - so I am sticking to normal running.

Oh and I ran 6 K today. Early, early to beat the heat. It was better.

Oh Liv but you can run 10K I absolutely cant -- at least not yet lol.

          Katrina welcome aboard!!!

All I can say Fancy is take it slow. Im a first time runner eventhough I did play soccer for five years in high school. After that, I never ran again but I knew that I love to run and enjoyed it so much in highschool. I didnt follow any specific program to start running. I first started just walking and then I began trying to run and like others have said I couldnt even run 30 seconds without being out of breath. But that was okay for me and I would stop until I was able to run again. I kept alternating and now I can run for a long while but I still alternate between walking and running. Plus if there was a day that I felt tired and couldnt run I didnt force it. I still go by that. I do as much as I can and thats it. But since i love to run this love helps me keep going and thats why I chose running as my form of exercise to keep me healthy for life.

Am gonna jump on the treadmill now and post my results when I am done.

Thanks for all the support! I am definitely watching my knees liv and whereami, I laughed when you said you were out of breath after 30 secs, I don't think it takes even 30 secs to run between hydro poles and I'm out of breath, lol. But I will keep trying, just like I did years ago I can't believe I used to run 7 miles a day! Oh well, what's that saying - "What goes around, comes around!" And so it will, have a great day everyone!

Thanks liv!!!! I did it again today....it seems like my idea to do shorter runs and one longer run is not working. Ive been trying to exercise every other day cuz everyday is too much I feel and I keep doing around 9 kilos.

So I guess I will keep it that way - every other day 9 kilos and try to increase it slowly to 10 kilos.
