  • Re: ADBB Vitamin Club Conversation Thread

Bio--thanks for your input! I will increase the flax to 2x daily. As far as calcium, I'm taking no extra supplements for it. I get 25% of my daily amout from my multivitamin, and I eat a lot of cheese (fresh and aged) and heavy cream quite often, and so I should be getting some from the dairy products.

This probably sounds silly, but another reason I haven't taken calcium is because of my mother's migraines...I used to get migraines quite regularly (they run in the family, and I don't know the exact cause of them) but I haven't had them since I started Atkins. My mother's migraines are caused by too much calcium. I checked out what foods have lots of calcium and those are ones I ate regularly, pre-Atkins, while I was getting migraines (yogurt, cheeses, fortified cereal, soy milk, spinach, oatmeal)...but I'm no doctor, and I'm probably just being silly. I am 25 and have never had a broken bone in my life...should I start taking calcium?

Sorry this is a long post, but I have another question/comment. Both today and yesterday, about 30 minutes after I took my vitamins, I got extremely nauseous for about 5-10 minutes, and then it passed. Yesterday I took my vitamins with breakfast, and today I took them on an empty stomach. Is there a certain one I'm taking that is known to cause an upset stomach?

By the way, I found this page that lists food sources of common vitamins...pretty cool:

Julie, I did not know your history of suffering from migraines. Sorry to hear of it! As such, you're right to be leary of calcium, that is, too much calcium.

The problem with too much calcium in your body is that the excess will get excreted out along with magnesium. It's the outgo of magnesium that is said to trigger migraines. I will try not to get too technical here, but too little magnesium leads to too much seratonin which leads too constricted blood vessels and over production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a type of chemical molecule that causes PAIN. You certainly don't want that!

Ideally, you want around 400 mg of magnesium a day. Some companies even have supplements with the right combo of magnesium and calcium in one. There are many journal articles on migraines, and some suggests taking 1000mg, 3x/day to help combat a current attack. You'll know you've had enough magnesium in your body when your stools become soft, not diarrhea though!

As for your other question, many vitamins can cause nausea in some folks. Come culprits are A, D, C, iron, and zinc. For me, zinc is the only one that upsets my stomach, but for my DH, it's iron, C, and zinc.

You can space your vitamins apart to see which supplement is the one. If it's the multivitamin, we're just gonna have to guess which ingredient it is.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but I just get excited chatting about health issues.

      Hope something helped.

Bio, thanks! I will look into magnesium/calcium supplements. And I will also do some experimenting with the supplements. You're a super-duper Hostess!

Thanks Julie! Hope you find something that works for you and doesn't cause you increased migraines! And if you can find the culprit vitamin causing you stomach upsets, we can try to find something else that might work better for you.

Well I took my vitamins today, and I staggered them. I took one (or 2 "safe" ones) about every 30 minutes to find the culprit. I had no nausea whatsoever! So I'm thinking it must be a certain combination of vitamins that's causing the stomach upsets. I guess I'll have to try different combinations...unless I want to be taking vitamins for 3 hours everyday.

There's no harm in taking vitamins throughout the day. Take a certain one at each meal or some other combination. I'm glad you didn't experience the nausea today...that would get old having that feeling everyday!

Oh yeah, I've taken my supplements today...what about the rest of you gals?

Julie, I also had the nausea problem, so i started staggering mine throught the day and the problem stopped. I think it was a certain combo that caused it. I know stagger them with meals (taking them with a meal reminds me to take them). So i take my mulit and a C in the a.m. My B-complex and calicium with lunch, and my omega 3-6-9 and another C and calcium in teh evening.

for anyone taking calcium, it's always best to spread them over the day, your body apparently can't abosorb more than 500 mgs at one time..my multi has 500 so i don't take my additional calcium with it.

The new vitamin thread will be posted sometime after lunch. I tried posting it this morning, but all the formating that I did on MS Word does not copy & paste at all onto the boards. It just looks like straight text.

Since my boss is out again this week, I need to lead the meetings so I'll do some formatting during lunch. It should be worth the wait.

I took my morning supplements...what about you?

Finished my vitamins, and I had some nausea today from the zinc. I know that zinc is good for the immune system. Is there something else that's good for the immune system that's not zinc (i.e. that wouldn't make me nauseous?)

Julie, there's lots of immune-boosting & infection-fighting supplements out there. Whether it'll upset your stomach is another issue. So, on the list for you to check out are the following: Vitamin C, vitamin A, as well as beta-carotene, B complex, galric, oil of oregano, echinacea, goldenseal, pantethine, olive leaf extract, vitamin E, flaxseed oil, glycerol monolaurate....some others that I don't recall at this moment.

So, I'm having issues with my memory stick! I can't access anything from it at the moment although I was able to use it this morning. My original Vitamin B write-up is at my home computer, so it is NOT lost! But unfortunately, I can't post it until I get home. Grrrr! I've put in a call to the building's computer geek to see if he can fix what's wrong with my memory stick. Sorry for the delay! I think next week, I'm going to use 2 memory sticks for backup or just use the home computer to post my weekly articles. Technology is great when it works...sucks when it doesn't!

Vitamin nauseau is the worst! I take a multi, magnesium, chromium, a B complex and biotin. The other morning I actually took them all in one swallow and ended up throwing up! =/ Spacing them anywhere from 10-15 minutes and with huge huge gulps of water really works for me.
