Tonight I made a stir fry with asparagus, red peppers and chicken. I stir fried it it a little olive oil, ginger and red hot pepper flakes.

I'll have roasted chicken legs with lemon and thyme, and for veggies there'll be asparagus with butter.

The recipe I've used asked for soy sauce, but instead I used beef broth with a little red wine vinegar, sesame oil and whatever spices I found in the house (after some google-ing, they ended up being garlic, black pepper and ginger ). It didn't taste like the real thing, but it wasn't bad either.

I picked up a stir fry spice mix last night, i think the only thing wrong with it is the sugar, but surely there isnt much in it if i only use 1 tbsp? was this ok?

              Ingredient -
Sugar, Salt, Dried Onion, Star Anise (10%), Dried Garlic (8%), Black Pepper, Fennel, Ginger, Cassia, Cloves, Anti-Caking Agent (Silicon Dioxide), Vegetable Oil.

If sugar is listed first, it means there is more sugar in the food than any other ingredient. If anise is listed the 4th and it represents 10%, then over 10% of the spice mix is sugar. Over 10% may mean 15% or 50%. If you used a tablespoon of this (about 6 grams), 10% would mean 0.6 grams of pure sugar, while 50% would mean 3 grams of sugar.

This spice mix is not allowed. But since you now know the ingredients in it, you can use the ground spices listed (salt, dried onion, anise, garlic, etc.) to make your own. If you want to add some sweetness to it, you can use Splenda or another "legal" sweetener.

Anyway, how did the recipe turn out?

                  I'm having something new.

I saw an episode of "Lidia's Italy" in which she cooked a frico (like this one here Frico with Onion Recipe - Frico con le Cipolle - Frico with Onion Recipe) but she also threw in potatoes and an egg. It turned out like a big cheese pancake with potatoes, onion and egg inside and she served it with some fried bacon and a crispy green salad.

I have some turnips in the frig, so I'll use that instead of the potatoes.

Will do. I love that show. I get so many ideas from her---even the pasta dishes because they're basically sauteed veggies and/or meat with pasta added. I've eliminated the pastas and doubled the meat and/or veggies for some really tasty skillet dinners. I made grandma's chicken and potatoes (without the potatoes) and it was delicious.

the frico turned out well. Though, I flipped it over too early and the center kinda fell apart. Oh well, it didn't affect the flavor. My tip is to cook it at medium-low temp to prevent burning. Otherwise, I'll try it with other veggies.
