Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~

my back to basics is going great. i think the turn around was just committing to it in my journal.
i dropped back from posting to 'downer' threads and posts. i really thought about where i was and where i want to be. putting things in perspective.
BTB part II for me was getting back to eating better portions of things. things are tasting pretty much normal to me now so eating 'right' is much easier. i have lost a couple pounds since i quit radiation and i'm only 1 to 2 pounds from my original goal weight.
i'm not fretting over things, keeping busy with exercise and not overloading with board things. i'm here sometimes to what might appear as 'all day' but there are days when i hardly visit.

I'm going to re-commit...again! I'll be seeing a friend who I haven't seen in 6 yrs in November. It would be great to be at my goal when I see her.

I'm going to start exercising tomorrow AM. I read on another board about committing to something for 30 days...well, I'm starting tomorrow and I'm going to commit to exercising for 30 days. I know I'm only hurting myself when I don't. I need to get that endurance I had back. I'm back in school now and also working part time 2 nights a week, so I need all the energy I can get. Exercising in the AM is a big part of my energy.

Eating is not the problem. I've been on track with that. That's never been my issue...it's always been exercise!

And lately, water has been a problem. I don't have time in my day to take a drink! I'm going to have to just make sure I have my bottles of water in my room and make it a priority to drink.

    Sherri!

I was just thinking about this thread earlier today, and I'm thrilled to see you take advantage of it for the support you need!

Those sweeteners are something else, aren't they? I still can't go without them entirely, but I have certainly cut back. They definitely do have the potential to ignite cravings, that's for sure.

I've already been thinking about Thanksgiving, because that's the next time I will see a lot of my relatives. I made goal 2 weeks before Thanksgiving last year, and there are a couple of uncles of mine who are thinking that I probably won't be able to maintain it for very long. They have no ill intent... it's just they struggle with weight, too, and know how difficult it can be. They are very familiar with Atkins, but think that it's too hard to stick too. I weighed in this morning at my goal weight, so the number on the scale isn't the problem. I do, however, want to tone up! So I'm right there with you, with commiting to exercise.

Thanks again for reviving the thread!

    Back to Basics for me!
For me it will involve participating in The No Way, NO Weigh Challenge! Eliviating the sweetners (No Sweet Challenge). Exercising (Hiking and gazelling) and participating in the September Mileage Challenge, (20 miles).
Will be recording my menu in journal each day along with supplements taken.
Carbs will be at Rung 2.
That's my plan and i'm gonna try like heck to stick with it!
I've gotten real sloppy with my woe ever since I broke my 142 day sweetner fast last 4th of July. I've gained 15 pounds.
Time to take back the control!!!
    All suport accepted!
    Sherri

    Jo,

i'm sure the stress (cortisol) has contributed significantly to your scale weight. Since my eating has been so good since the beginning of the year, it can ONLY be two things:
    1) Stress from:
    a) going back to school for my Masters's
    b) My grandmother's passing
    c) My Mom's diagnosis with breast cancer
    and
    2) Lack of exercise

When i think of how stressful it's been for me, I'm humbled because it's HAD to be nothing compared to what your stress level has been. If you just continue to eat right, it will eventually come back off. And, if it doesn't, then we'll just have to learn how to support you if that time comes.

I think it's great that Jack supports your needing to eat earlier. I can relate to that too, as some nights I don't get home from school until after 10...I certainly don't want to eat that late. Sometimes I can't help it because I'm ravenous.

    Greetings, All

Wow, there's been a lot of activity here in the last few days! Cool.

Jo, don't worry about it if you can't read through the whole thread. I wish I could say that there are some magic pearls of wisdom in here that are guaranteed to turn you around, but there's not. Like Joy, I seem to always have something out of balance in the equation... if I'm eating well, my exercise sucks. When my exercise is good, my eating sucks. It's always something. And I've had to get over the 120 thing, too. I managed to stay there consistently for a couple of months early in the year, but I'm afraid those days are long gone. It takes a great deal of effort just to stay at 125 (that's naked, on my scale, which weighs me 4 pounds less than my doc's scale)

Q, I wish that I could say that my eating is always good. For the longest time, eating was SO easy for me. Really, it was a breeze! I was always satisfied, and never gave food a second thought. Oh, how times have changed. I have still never eaten a single food that is off-plan, but I do have portion control issues at times, and am sick of a lot of the food that I used to love. So I'm thinking a lot more about food lately, and that sucks.

Monie, I think it's great that you are searching out recipes now for the upcoming holidays. Really, they will be here before you know it. Once August ends, it seems like the end of the year comes really quickly. You'll be prepared. Smart!

Heidi, I hope that you get to the point where you can resist DH's junk. Thankfully, I don't really have a problem passing on Barry's stuff. And it's a good thing, because I'd be in trouble otherwise. He doesn't eat very much food at all overall, but he does like something sweet every night. He got on the scale a few minutes ago, and fully clothed with shoes, just after finishing dinner, he only weighs 135. It's so not fair.

    Yep, it's just not fair.

Time to put on my big girl panties, and deal with it.

Jimmie welcome to the BTB thead. It's good to see you over here. I am constantly these days finding myself in the need of focusing on basics. There is a lot of good reading in this thread but take your time, it's not really a catch up kind of thing you just jump in where your at and everyone will support you are you discover where you are in your journey!

I'm not sure whats wrong with me I can keep my exercise right on track but my eating is horrid. I have great days and then awful days and we all know that just doesn't work. Here I find myself once again on a Monday knowing I am rererererestarting my WOE back on track. I don't know what happens to me on the weekends but it is not good. I could blame it on Hubby who wants to eat out constantly and has little regard for my diet ..... he doesn't see how what he eats should have anything to do with what I do. And I guess in all reality it shouldn't ............ BUT when he sits there with my weaknesses and favorites in front of me gobbling them down I just don't have what it takes to resist it. I just had a long talk with him over this weekend and I told him I need him to keep those things away fro while as I get my focus and self control back ..... then he can eat them all he wants out of my sight!!! I could also blame it on work ......... I think everyone who has a loved in in a nursing home thinks the staff needs homebaked goodies brought in regularly ...... we don't!!! The girls I work with are almost all overweight and bring in things to share and have them all set out so they are just reachable ........ I can blame it on everyone but when it all comes down to it it's ME! I need to suck it up gather myself and find that strength I had for so long to carry on despite what otehrs around me are doing ....... I lost that somewhere awhile back and I can't seem to find it .......

So as sick of hearing me say it as you all must be ........... I am here once again rerererererestarting and getting back to basics ......... One day at a time one minute at a time, finding my place in all of this

joy, this has hit harder for me now than ever. had i not lost the weight prior to diagnosis, i would have been in much worse shape. thank goodness i was slimmer while this was going on. but i have this fear of getting fat, gaining all the weight back and it's been dwelling on my mind for weeks now. i gained a few pounds prior to radiation and then a few more during and now it just seems impossible to take it off. i weigh the scale weight against the eat healthy, be healthy side of things all the time.
the later of the two is the most important but the first one, scale weight, has it's claws dug in deep.

one complaint i've had for a couple months now is we are eating so late. jack is working so much, he gets home, we go for a walk and by the time dinner is ready, it's 8pm. i've never done well by eating this late. not only for weight but i don't sleep good, i feel sluggish the next day. so jack bought a microwave yesterday. he's told me to fix dinner early and go ahead and eat, he'll be happy with a nuked dinner. this is probably back to basics, part II for me although i have not completed part I as of yet. that may be a work in progress for awhile.

i have no clue how i'm going to be able to read through this thread. i need the cliff notes.

I'm having a hard time finding my Mojo....

It's like if I do really good eating, then some other part of my life falls apart....if I'm exercising, then the eating falls apart....or I start with some of my cross-addictions (coffee, shopping)

The fall semester starts next week, so the gym will be open early in the AM. I've got some folks at work that i can run with. Of course...I've got to get out of that mind-think too...that I have to have someone ELSE to motivate me instead of finding my OWN motivation. Ugh.

So, where are you wanting to start with your "get back to basics"?

joy, i've thought about this since you asked. almost posted then decided to think a little more.
i really believe the first part of my 'back to basics' is going to have to be an inward search. my illness, the surgery, the radiation afterwards has done things to my body and it's going to take time to get over it. some things will never be the same. i thought my hormones were wacked out before and having surgery sent me jet speeding into menapause. what part of me wasn't there already, suddenly got put there by the surgeons knife.

i have to realize more than ever that i am not the same woman i was at 20 or 30 yr. old. heck, i'm not even the girl i was 4 months ago. from the inside out, i am different.

so the first leg of my back to basics will have to be who i am now and what realistic goal can i set for myself and it must be something attainable and maintainable. a weight of 120 is no longer an option.

second leg of back to basics.... i have no clue.

I'm finding it hard to get back to exercising...the food part is always good with me...sometimes portions are a problem, but eating on plan (low carb) is good. Exercise is still the problem. I had all damned summer to get back into a routine and didn't. I'm hoping that starting work will get me going with exercise again.

I know that I'm bigger than I was. Weight wise, I'm losing, but inches wise I know I've gained since not exercising. I need to get back on that track! My signature is going to be changing from 0 minutes exercised to making my goal for September!

She had some threads a long time ago about low carb versions of holiday foods. Check out the food network's website too. www.foodnetwork.com and search George Stella and Low Carb.

I, personally, found it pretty easy to make a bunch of low(er) carb versions of traditional foods.

Jimmie, I keep coming back to this thread to help keep things basic and on track. I did so well for 6 weeks on the 6WEC #45 but I haven't exercised ONCE for #46. Tsk Tsk! My food is good, though.
being the keeper of the charts i've sorta noticed you weren't there. i'm glad your food is good.

there are so many pages here, it's going to take me a month of just to get through it all.

mitzi, i really need to spend some time reading through this thread. because of recent history, i'm really dealing with some food issues, health issues and weight gain caused by both. i've spent much time, 4 + years tending to others and it's time, at least for the short term, to tend to me.
