Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~
hey mitzi friend! i have been following but not posting here. i just wanted to send you a hug for your headaches....seems all this is a struggle lately but don't give up. i think a lot of our friends are pedaling hard to keep going right now. what's up with that?
your son is a doll. as a teacher i wish i could give you a magic wand on the schoolwork issue. my daughter is really smart and she does pull mostly A's but let me tell you it is a dance we do to get her there. she is more interested in the phone and her hair! i think a lot of it is the age. i know that we are sitting down before the start of school in two weeks and working out a plan of action with her input. her biggest challenge is time management for chores and homework (she has two chores after school....you'd think we had her chained to the kitchen!) rather than consequences, for her it works best to ALLOW her the social time...in truth, it is really punishment for her when she CAN"T use the phone or go to an activity after school...so it is a win/win. her choices earn her fun. or not. she'll go for the fun any day!
i love the photo of your son....i just hope that you have a GOOD washing machine. you could do a commercial for tide!

Glenn, thank you friend.
Pam, thanks for the encouraging words. He actually let me weigh and measure him Sunday afternoon, and has been making some better choices with his food. From previous history, I know not to relax... he can be extremely moody, and I am barely hanging on myself at times. One day at a time...Originally posted by pamelainaustin View Post
Just take it a little at a time with him.
The good thing in Daniel's favor is that he has that adolescent growth spurt to look forward to and sometimes that can really change things. Is he into any sports or athletic stuff?
I'm lucky in that Daniel is not hung up on video games. He does like TV (history channel and stuff like that) and has a PS2, but I don't think he's played it 3 times this summer. He is fairly sedentary though, because his main interests are dirt bike riding and fishing. Dirt bike riding in the woods is very demanding... you rarely sit on the seat, and are constantly using your core for balance and forearms to hang onto the bike while fighting the elements of the terrain. This is his first love, but it's not practical to do it consistently. The closest places to ride are a 3 hour trip (one way), and it's impossible to do it in the summer (we've been hitting 98 daily, with high humidity). It's stifling to do anything outdoors. His other love is fishing, but that doesn't take very much energy.
I have one of the few husbands in the country that has never cared for sports that involve a ball. While we do follow our beloved LSU Tigers (national champs last year!) during football season, we couldn't tell you who plays in the Super Bowl or the World Series. He's always been interested in motorcycles and cars. Consequently, Daniel has been the same way. His school has really been after him to play football next year (he's going in 7th grade), and he leans toward doing that sometimes... but then he changes his mind. I have mixed feelings about it. Academically, he is smart but is incredibly lazy when it comes to assignments... so much so, that I have to literally shove him into a chair with books and a pen and stay on him until he gets things completed. He refuses to use his assignment pad, so sometimes things don't get done, and I am not aware. He likes going to school because of his friends, but he can't stand the work. So I'm not sure that he could keep his grades up enough to even stay on the team. If he wants to do it, however, we are behind him. He would have to get a physical to be cleared to play, and he doesn't want to go to the doctor because he's gained weight since his last visit.
Ah, it's such a familiar story.

I'll bet you are a great mom but it IS hard to try to control what they eat and drink a lot of the time, especially when some pretty cruddy choices are available in school. Sometimes ya just gotta be tough and don't let him talk you into buying things you know are not good for him. My mom was the master at this--I still had to drink milk with my dinner until I left home for college at 18
and soda was a rare treat. Just take it a little at a time with him.

Mitzi-
Hope you are feeling better soon!
Hey, thanks for the broccoli slaw idea. Up north here we have cole slaw with haddock fish fry. Of course I have been having broiled haddock when I have it. Have been avoiding the typical cole slaw since it shows so many carbs, am I right? Your recipe looks interesting. I eat broccoli all the time. The idea of the inside of an egg roll sounds good too.
Thanks again.
Get well soon.

Good Evening, Everyone
Blah! I'm in a crappy mood. I think I've burned myself out, again. I'm sick of the food I can eat. I felt hungry yesterday and this morning, so tested with a ketone strip and found that I'm not in ketosis anymore. And it just pissed me off... that I could eat so cleanly, and not be in ketosis, and still be hungry.
Then, I discover that TOM is in town again... just 3 weeks after the last visit.
Gosh, this gets old.
I know that my plan was to stick to Rung 1 and add carbs until I reach 120, but I've lost my drive for that... maybe after TOM passes, but I've got a million things going on at home, and I'm just disgusted and worn out right now. Starting on Friday, I'll be working open to close at the boutique everyday through Tuesday... maybe being cooped up and busy in there all day will help me out... Tom should be waning by then.
This crap is hard.

Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~
The whole bag provides 12g net carbs (20g carbs - 8g fiber = 12g net carbs). There are 4 servings in the bag... so 3g net carbs per serving. When I eat it fried, I eat the whole bag and that's my meal. I usually do it for breakfast on the mornings that I make bacon for the family, so I can use some of those drippings. When I eat it like slaw, I get more servings out of it because it's so "big" (you'll see what I mean)... when cooked down, it really reduces in size.Originally posted by odirish View Posthow many carbs is it?

Ok, this looks great. I've never seen it.
I like to take the regular bagged cole slaw and fry it in bacon grease. You're right, it's like the inside of the eggroll.
My husband doesn't like it. I usually do it with fish fried in pork rind breading but he likes the chunkier fried cabbage.
I'll keep my eyes out for this.

Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~
hen you make it like cole slaw, how many carbs is it? I am starting Induction today. I wanted to start yesterday, but we were invited to a Biker's Breakfast. At any given time, there had to be over 200 bikes just while we were there. Last year they served over 1350 people.
That's alot of bikes. A few of us ended up at our house for swimming. It has been in the high 90's for the past 5 or 6 days now. Maybe if I can stick to Atkins, I'll be able to wear a two piece next year.

Broccoli slaw is shredded broccoli stalks, cabbage, and carrots (which I pick out when doing Induction) that you can prepare like traditional cole slaw. It comes packaged, you can mix it with 1/4 cup mayo, 1.25 teaspoons vinegar, and splenda to taste. Excellent slaw! It's very, very crisp. Lately though, I've been tossing it into bacon drippings and cooking it down until it's soft. It reminds me a lot of the inside of an egg roll when prepared like this. And yep, I eat the entire bag when I do it this way. It provides 12g net carbs (20g carbs - 8g fiber = 12g net carbs). When I eat it like regular cole slaw, I usually divide into 2 servings (there are really 4 servings in the bag... I'm just a veggie freak).
Here is a pic of the package: (I've seen a couple of different brands)

Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~
Sunday, July 20th - 7th day of clean eating - Progressing to Rung 1 and 25 net carbs
I am going to go back to using Sundays as my weigh-in day, because that's the way I have done it since I started in February of last year, and I am a creature of habit. I was going to use Mondays, since I started on Monday last week, but I want to go back to my usual routine. So, that makes today weigh-day for the week and I came in at 126. 4 pounds down this week! Better than I had hoped for - thank God!
This week (today), I move to Rung 1 and begin the search for my CCLL (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing). I did this last year, but I just want to verify it again... it is possible for things to change, and since I have managed to eat at around 20 net carbs this week, I might as well formally move up in 5g increments to see how many I can eat and still lose. I averaged a loss of between 1 and 2 pounds a week for my entire journey from re-start to goal last year, and am hoping I can do that this time until I reach 120. I think that I can do it as long as I stay on Rung 1 and don't let my calories get too high... I like to average between 1600 and 1800.
Ok, here's my details for the day... I'm high in calories, but I will make that up in my average for the week. My mom sent home some of the shrimp from last night with me, so I finished that up. All of that shrimp made my protein too high.
And believe me, I think that I've had my fill of shrimp for a while. My meals look huge... I didn't eat any snacks or mini-meals today like I usually do.
Breakfast - 12 boiled shrimp; 3 pieces of bacon; 12 ounce bag of broccoli slaw "fried" in the drippings from the bacon
Lunch - 24 small sauteed shrimp in butter; 1/2 cucumber with 3 tbsp ranch dressing
Dinner - 10 ounce Hamburger patty topped with provolone cheese; mushrooms sauteed in butter; 1/2 avocado
Fitday Totals:
1909 calories
25 net carbs (38g carbs - 13g fiber = 25 net carbs)
61% Fat
5% Carbs
34% Protein
- Just finishing up my 64 ounces of water
- Took Supplements
- No Exercise

I probably need to clarify that the patients I see are all children--I am a pediatric nurse practitioner--and none of them are on a low carb WOE. I **wish** there was solid science/research to support this WOE for kids because I think it would be helpful but currently I encourage physical activity, avoidance of sugar and junk foods, whole grains, healthy fats and lots of veggies. I would love to be part of a comprehensive approach to childhood overweight/obesity--maybe someday...

Pam, thank you SO much for the kind words!Originally posted by pamelainaustin View PostP.S. Do you think your C25K had anything to do with your recent struggles? Several people on here have seemed to develop similar struggles when running regularly
You know, I have considered the fact that I have been running 3 times a weeks now to be one of the factors in my overeating. I know that it's only 3 miles at a time, but for a former couch potato like me, that is quite a workout! And I think it does make me hungrier. So the added hunger, coupled with the trigger foods I'd been getting into (sweeteners, in particular), were a bad combo. It's been easier for me not to overeat today, even though I ran this morning, since I'm eating cleanly.
Hey, something you said about ketones got me to thinking, and I wanted to clarify something. You were saying that when you see patients with positive ketones in the urine it is always when they are sick (usually with vomiting and diarrhea) and not eating so the body is burning their fat for energy, hence the positive ketones. It always goes away when they are back to eating normally. You may already know this, but I just wanted to say that for someone who doesn't normally eat low-carb, I could see how having ketones in the urine could indicate illness. For people who low-carb as a WOE, though, it is perfectly safe to stay in ketosis for extended amounts of time... doesn't indicate illness at all.
Thanks again for your encouraging words!
