I have 3 chapters left and will try to finish them and my homework tonight. I've been sick for 4 days with a sore throat. I'm feeling a lot better today.

It took me a while to read back through everything I missed. A lot of great things were discussed. Sunny brought up the cream I was going to ask about. I think it had to have been a mistake. I'll be sticking with 2-3 T.

In Pre-Maintenance on page 201,202 and 203 under The Power of Ten, why does he change the order foods should be added?

I'll let you know when I'm done.

very good question, pr. i've asked that myself. i am only guessing here (as i am waiting for a more expert answer) but i think it might have to do with the glycemic index?????
        or it's a typo.

i'll be rereading about this before i start reading part three. rest assured that i'll do what i can to find the answer becaue i want to know too and this is as much a relearning experience for me as it is for you.

I just had a thought... Maybe Sunny could go back through her collection of earlier (pre Atkins Nutritionals) editions and see if the cream, power of 10, and other issues we are wondering about are addressed. My guess is that after Dr. A finished the manuscript, someone came in and added some plugs for the products. And I'm pretty sure he didn't create the recipes himself.

I hate to break it to you, but the good doctor didn't WRITE any of the books--not even the first one back in the late 60's (the 1972 edition is not the first). He had ghostwriters for them all. I read some interviews with the ghostwriters and they used to get into knock-down-drag-out fights over what should go into the books! He was quite a character, but so were the writers.

His wife made up most of the recipes and wrote the cookbooks with the help of the ghostwriters. She took over the supplement and low carb products side of things soon after they married. SHE was the one pushing the low carb junk before that part was sold.

By 2002, Dr. Atkins was no longer in charge of anything--not even the Atkins Center. This is the first time I have ever read all of the 2002 edition. I read parts of it, but I relied on the 1999 edition from the start. I'm not liking what I'm reading much of the time.

For example...Page 123, Rules of Induction #4 ... Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. ... #5. Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable food list. And that means absolutely nothing! (sounds like he really means it to me) Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure (earlier editions said kiss of death) during this phase of Atkins. (The earlier editions added this line after the "kiss of death" statement: Addicts will find this rule builds character in a hurry.)

Alrighty...I believed him! Now go to page 140...almost to the bottom of the page...He's talking about Induction flu--what it feels like: Then, he says, Usually I advise patients who have these problems to slow down the weight loss. They should add another helping of vegetables to their evening meal or one or two ounces of nuts or seeds. Although their bodies would almost certainly (how can you almost certainly??? that's an oxymoron) adjust during the second week, there isn't any good reason for feeling washed out and sickly for even one day. (I beg your pardon??? It has to happen some time!)

He wasn't nearly so kindly in the 1999 edition! Here's what he said then: Usually, I advise patients who have these problems to back off and slow down. I suggest they add a second salad or a helping of vegetables with their evening meal. Although their bodies would almost certainly adjust during the second week, there isn't any good reason for feeling washed out and sickly for five or six days.

I don't think he changed his opinion that much in three years. In 2002, he was no longer in control, so they could add anything they liked. He was just not that nice. He screamed and yelled at his patients (and they still loved him). He would never tell someone to break the rules, time after time. He believed is his "diet" and he knew it worked if you just toughed it out and followed the rules. Especially during Induction. He was hard on himself and the patients that he sincerely cared about.

I'm gonna stop now, I get too upset when I think of how hard Dr. A worked to give good health to so many people and all the people around him were just after the almighty $$buck$$! I sure do wish I'd met the man--he's my hero!

              Sunny!

About the cream--both the 1992 and 1999 edition only limit cream by the carb count. It just says "note carbohydrate content".

Spinach, cabbage, tomatoes and onions have always been on the "other veggie" list. Someone was saying that at one time they were listed with salad veggies. Might not have been on this thread.

i would have to go back into the thread to get exact wording. this is something that was "brought to the table" as something 2big had said somewhere back in the past, that the atkins advantage site has moved some things from the other veggie list to the salad veggie list. some changes were made, as i understand it.

but something we must keep in mind for our own sanity and for the sake of the newbies and others that are reading, we use this certain edition and it really doesn't matter what happens on the atkins advantage site. from what i've seen there lately, i'm glad i'm going by this book and not their updated version.

i remember way back in the day, of seeing dr atkins on programs telling about his "diet" and the hosts were always being negative but he stuck to his guns and never backed down.

i'm going to attempt to clear the water a little bit here. since this question was posed, i've read, i've reread, i searched, i've asked questions.

first, the power of ten is just like the power of 5 in the way that carbs are added. when you reach maintanance and you're running along just fine at 136 or 145 or whatever, your goal and i-feel-good-weight, instead of eating 5 carbs worth of almonds one day, you can have 10 carbs. or you can add some winter squash, or some peas or ________ fill in the blank within the food group you are adding food from. if you're adding food from the nut group one day don't add from the legume group the next. keep it within the group during the week. i hope that makes sense.
basically we're already eating these foods at this point, we're just adding more, so long as we don't start gaining.

now in my rereading x 4 or 5, of pages 201 thru 203, btw, the only place i can see that power of 10 mentioned, i really tried to concentrate to see what it was i was missing. i understand the adding of 10. what i didn't understand was the order in which we added these foods. then it hit me.... the exact quote is this with the bold my emphasis,
The following portions each contain roughly 10 grams of carbohydrates. Food groups are arrange in the GENERAL order in which they should be added.

apparently, adding one group ahead of the other or swapping two around is of no big consequence. that's how i interpret the word "general". the glycemic index, i am sure, probably plays a part in this as it does during owl, but the order is not be an absolute. we were taught with OWL that the foods were indeed added in the order listed because of their effect on our blood sugar. i think the order of OWL is an absolute but not so much when we get to the power of 10.
