Re: 2009 Read The Book Challenge

Alright here are some of my comments and questions since I started reading last night. I will be finished by tonight as I am stuck in a hospital all day sitting with my uncle.

    TIPS:
    • When grocery shopping, stick to the aisles on the perimeters of the store. The center aisles are where the junk food and processed food lurk.
This tip was on Page 27 of the PDF file. But seeing how he puts it like that - it is correct. The junk food and processed foods are sooooo in the center aisles of the store!!

I have also learned from Chapter four that I have a food obession. That is why I eat the things in the past I have ate to get me to the weight I am today. In chapter four he gives three groups - and asked that you pick which group you are. I am in group C where I always say I cant leave without this food. Well I have proved SINCE I started on 8/15/2009 that I CAN live without it and I am making the changes!!

I'm done with Part One. Excellent re-read and reminder that despite all the propaganda out there, this WOE is healthy.

Also, if someone could tell me where to get the PDF version of the book, I'd appreciate it. There's times I'd like to read parts of the book and don't have the book handy. Thanks!

Re: 2009 Read The Book Challenge

Chapter 7, Is There a Metabolic Advantage? You Be the Judge, pp. 72-73
        • Only by doing Atkins can you lose weight eating the same number of calories on which you used to gain weight.
        • Burning body fat has a metabolic advantage over so-called “balanced” or “low-fat” diets.
        • Count carbs, not calories.
        • Spread your carbohydrate intake throughout the day to avoid blood-sugar spikes.
This chapter went into more depth about the metabolic advantage introduced in Chapter 2 with details on scientific studies. What I found important is that I need to worry less about counting calories and keep concentrating on my carb intake. Coming from South Beach Diet (which is lower carb than traditional diets), I was used to keeping my calories in the 1100-1300ish range. Now I find my diet seems to average around 1500 cal/day (sometimes higher; sometimes lower). I think I still watch my calories as I find it hard to believe that I still lose weight with my calories running higher than I have been used to for so many years.

The final point about spreading carbs throughout the day is an important one I think. I make sure I have some with every meal. I see a lot of newbies that have protein/fat during the day and then pile on all their veggies at dinner. I think their weight loss could be better and hunger/crappy feeling problems would be addressed if they followed this simple tip.

gotta love the book flash! did anybody ask how much weight you have lost?

This is a great explanation and one I will try to remember when confronted by naysayers who tell me ketosis is bad.

was able to get a lot of reading in yesterday - up to page 87! I was definitely in Group A, and my husband was in Group B [big time] - I used to get angry about how much he snacked, it was constant - he couldn't walk thru the kitchen without grabbing a handful of something. He also used to eat late at night, sometimes after sleeping for a while - I was pretty disgusted with his habits...but now, those habits are gone - it's wonderful!

Chapter 8, The Complexities of Carbohydrates

This chapter went over the different types of carbohydrates (digestible and non-digestible [fiber]) and the importance of eating fiber rich foods. Of interest to me was Dr. Atkins’ recommendation of using glycemic index numbers as well as carb counts in food selection. I haven’t been paying too much attention to glycemic load at this stage in my Atkins journey but see it as very important when I get into the higher rungs and into Maintenance.

When in those upper rungs, a quick re-visit to these pages will remind me why some common foods should really be avoided:

                          pp.80-81 Glycemic Index
                          Corn Flakes – 84
                          Instant rice – 91
                          Watermelon – 72
                          Vanilla wafer – 77
Look at how high these numbers are...yikes!!! When you consider the carb counts AND the glycemic index of some foods it is easy to see why they need to be avoided.

Another interesting piece was antioxidants and the Atkins Ratio. I didn’t realize garlic was so very high in antioxidants. I question leaf lettuce being #2 in antioxidants…I would rank that much lower and thought blueberries would be in the top rankings. Anyways, I think the main point here is why it is important to have a wide variety of veggies and other foods such as berries so you get the benefits of all the different nutrients.

                          Chapter 9, Facts and Fallacies

This chapter should be in a PDF file so it can be printed and handed out when people barrage you with these various fallacies. Somehow I don’t think it would do much good as the anti-Atkins people seem to be zealots in defense of low-fat, calorie-counting diets. And I think they get angry when you poke holes in their flawed logic. Too bad…I am going to continue to educate myself and poke away!

I've only been to this doctor 4 times, so they don'y know me yet. But I was grinning when the asst. weighed me. She started with my weight from a week into Atkins. She kept looking my chart and adjusting it DOWN 20 pounds. At the end of my visit, the doc said he was pleased to see my BP down with the new meds. I then told him I was on Atkins. He said, "Be careful, that can be very dangerous." Thinking about this ''Read the Book Challenge'' I rattled off information I have been reading to him and how I was in with a strict online study group, how I am strict and am studying the book, etc. With that, he then said with a smile, "Well then maybe by the next visit you will have another 15, 17 pounds 18, 20 pounds or more off." I took that as approval of doing Atkins as long as it's done correctly.
