Ahhh it all goes back to money. Those crappy processed snacks and junk food make TONS of money. Think of all facets of a single product--advertising, toy tie-ins, profit margins...everybody everywhere (except the factory workers) are making mad loot off crappy, cheap, bad-for-you food. And it's marketed at the most impressionable and easily-influenced demographic: kids.
Has anyone here read Don't Eat This Book by Morgan Spurlock? It talks a lot about the above stuff. Like, for example, agencies like the American Heart Association are easily swayed by all the money they receive from big business.

Wow, I was gone most of yesterday and busy today--It took forever to get caught up! There's plenty of motivation and excitement here, can't wait to see how we all do. Hope we all make our goals by Labor Day.

Ooh, Ann, I haven't read that one! But I love Morgan Spurlock. (Super Size Me was disgusting, and I haven't eaten McD's since.) I have read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser though, and that was frightening and fascinating, not only for the info about the meat packing plants, but how SYNTHETIC the fast food is! Even natural flavors aren't natural!

          Now there's a big surprise - NOT!

I have a book here by AHA for a "heart-healthy" diet: MAJOR carb load!

And you can forget reading Prevention...Dr. Ornish is one of the contributors. So it's ALWAYS bashing Atkins. Ugh, I dread reading that at the gym, but one can only read the same SHAPE magazine so many times...

I read Fast Food Nation, too. It's enough to turn your stomach! I actually have a client who worked for IBP for 40 years, including on the kill floor. I was just finishing FFN when I admitted him. It was really interesting to talk to him.

Just a warning, Morgan Spurlock is not a big fan of Atkins either, but there is a lot of interesting information in the book. I haven't had McDonald's (or any fast food) since I started back on Atkins, but my boyfriend hasn't eaten any fast food since Supersize Me. I think that came out in 2004, so three years...

OH! Ornish!! I have a link to a PBS airing about the different diets. There's a bit with Atkins and Ornish going at each other! The guy is a jerk!

I wouldn't assume he'd be a fan of Atkins--his girlfriend is a vegan chef, right? But still worth a read, I'm sure!

I met SweetCher and ValidRouge in my first challenge and it was just what I needed. I know that I need it again. There's no way I can keep up with this thread but I will check in daily a few times. I pledge 5 pounds (don't ask). Now I have to click 'post reply', it's been like 3 minutes since I typed this. Okay, I'm in.
