    Nice job folks!

Oooh...little awards sound so cool! Thanks, Self!!

Not weighing, and I'm waiting till Friday to do my measuring. But I took pics today (even though I said I'd wait until next week), guess this not weighing stuff is really getting to me....I need to "see" the differences. And I guess I can say, I can see a difference.

You are all doing so well! I'm sorry I don't get in here as often as I'd like, but I read when I can and enjoy hearing about everyone's success. I haven't done an official first weigh in for this challenge as I was waiting for my new scale to arrive -- finally, it's here! This Friday is my first official weigh in; I hope to add to your already great numbers!

Congratulations Kiss, Self, Strudel, 10, Julie and Baarb on the pounds and inches lost. I weighed and measured this morning and was up 2 pounds (wedding evilness?) but was down 1 inch on my hips and 1 inch on my bust (from my back I hope!) Anyway.. gotta run...off to buy myself a turtleneck...HEHE!!

OK! I'm back! Week 1 I was a complete loser, or shall I say, gainer! We had friends in town and 1 dessert led to another...one beer led to another, I GAINED 4#!!! If it wasn't for this challenge, I probably would have thrown up my arms and quit. But, I'm back and being good and lost all of that plus another pound! Lots of WATER DRINKING!! So, I am down 1 pound since the start of the challenge! Yipee! Congrats to all who are losing, and those that are sticking in there! Your stories and chatting are all inspirational!

Keria, I'm glad to see you back on the wagon, and congrats on one pound down!

Buffy--I was having problems yesterday, too. Is the site still not working? I had to just write my measurements down a piece of paper. I'm hoping to input them with fittogether is back up and functioning.

Today's discussion comes from DANDR, Chapter 6, page 59:

              Lipolysis vs. Glucosis

Many scientists are of the opinion that you need glucose for fuel. That statement is only partially true. Ketones provide the exception. They are derived from fat when lipolysis is occurring, and are the other source of fuel that energizes our cells and power our brain and other vital organs. Ketones fuel the body in lipolysis just as glucose fuels the body in glucosis--my term for a carbohydrate metabolism. Glucose and ketones are the only two fuels that come from food. (Alcohol is a third fuel.)

I find that people understand the concept better when I tell them, "If you're not in lipolysis, you're in glucosis." The two fuel sources are your body's alternative, completely parallel options for energy metabolism.

This terminology has helped many of my patients convince their doctors or dieticians that Atkins was the right path. If you have a doctor who tells you lipolysis (and ketosis) is bad, counter with this question. "If I'm not in lipolysis then I will be in glucosis, right? So, why it is so bad for an overweight person like me, with hyperinsulinism, to be burning off my own stored fat?"

If you think about it for a moment, you'll understand why such a dual system exists. Before the invention of agriculture, in the first few hundred thousand years of human life, periods of severe food shortage must have been uncomfortably common. Human beings had to be able to burn their own body fat for fuel on those recurrent occasions when the larder was bare. Naturally, our bodies devised a highly efficient system for doing just that.

Have you ever wondered what sustained bears and other hibernating animals during their long winter sleep? It was the utilization of their fat stores. When you dial down the volume of insulin production, as you do in lipolysis, your body is equipped to burn your own body fat in a similar way. It takes place smoothly and is self-sustaining. For you, this is a sort of biologic utopia. The process of losing weight becomes as painless as eating naturally was when you were piling on pounds.
              QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

**For you personally, what is the biggest benefit of being in ketosis/lipolysis?

**How do you feel in glucosis, and how do you feel in ketosis/lipolysis?

**What studies have you heard of that prove hyperinsulinism is damaging to the body?

**For you personally, what is the biggest benefit of being in ketosis/lipolysis?

CONSTANT ENERGY! When I was a carbohydrate fiend, I would have bursts of manic energy, and then I would crash just as hard. I compared myself to a sprinter--I was frighteningly frenetic at the start, but after such a short distance, the race was over and I was done. Now I feel like a marathoner--a constant energy is at my disposal, allowing me to go the distance.

**How do you feel in glucosis, and how do you feel in ketosis/lipolysis?

When I was burning carbs for fuel, I basically felt ill. I would be "high" one minute and crashing the next. I had that mid-afternoon drop and I'd fall asleep in class. I would get mood swings and migraines thanks to blood sugar issues and food sensitivities. I also gained TONS of weight.

When I burn fat for fuel, I have a constant supply of energy, I have endurance, I have no mood swings/irritability/migraines, and best of all, I lose weight!

**What studies have you heard of that prove hyperinsulinism is damaging to the body?

I actually saw a study yesterday that said that hyperinsulinism/high-carb diets can cause blindness.

Energy! need nowhere near as much sleep which makes my weekends sooooo much longer!! supressed appetite too however that gets annoying at times when you really feel like you cant eat!

**How do you feel in glucosis, and how do you feel in ketosis/lipolysis?

When in glucosis i was constantly tired, with depression like symptoms, now i'm just the opposite!

**For you personally, what is the biggest benefit of being in ketosis/lipolysis?

I think for me is the constant reassurance that I'm burning fat. Ketosis is as much a stae of mind as it is a physical aspect of our body source of fuel. I still get a bit tired, but that come from me over working myself, I push myslef so hard but I'm getting better at the balancing act. My goal to be around for my child and to make sure he doesn't fall in to the same deadly way that I faced. I'm the first to stop the vicious cycle of abuse in my family, the first to graduate college and the first not to work in a factory. I guess I'll be the first to stop obesity as well.

**How do you feel in glucosis, and how do you feel in ketosis/lipolysis?
I Always felt tired and unmotivated in Glucosis, it made it easier to lounge and eat junk all day, and man I was good at it too. I'm ketosis I feel it's wasted effort on my bodies behalf if I'm just sitting there, if I excercise I see it as a double whammy

                      Hey, everyone.

I signed up for this challenge and I'm scared to death to post my weight and measurements for all to see. I also am in fear of posting pictures. The problem is that I know that if I do it it will be like facing my fears. Putting it out there so that my mind doesn't take the "secret" and tell me I'm less of a person. I've spent 2 years working on my dialogue and now, I need to just do it. So, I'm in a renewed state of motivation and I'm going to take pictures and put it out there to conquer my fears! More to come.

                      QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

**For you personally, what is the biggest benefit of being in ketosis/lipolysis?
I'm not hungry and the obsession is lifted. The planning of binges is not there and my self esteem is at an all time high.

**How do you feel in glucosis, and how do you feel in ketosis/lipolysis?
I'm just recovering with a bout of being in glucosis and it sucks eggs!!@ I'm a little depressed/down about life. I'm struggling to overcome sugar cravings. I'm looking at the scale and getting frustrated that it is not moving!
Ketosis is heaven and I'm going to write down how I feel in glucosis so that if I'm ever tempted to go back, I won't.

**What studies have you heard of that prove hyperinsulinism is damaging to the body?

No specific studies, but, I would assume that the same affects of diabetes would be pertinent.

buffy, i hear you about your fears...i thought i was going to freak out when i posted my fat pictures...but, i have to share with you that it was a liberating experience for me. this is who i am and what i look like and i am proud of who i am and all the work i've done to get where i am. i want to have a better attitude about my body and posting those pics helped. you are so beautiful and i'm sure your body reflects this beauty! i am so happy we are in this together! we are going to be successful and reach our goals...and all our struggles with sugar are worth it because we are learning who we really are, learning to love our selves, and learning to truly take the best care of our selves that we can...you got this! you can do it!

I agree. I was so terrified of posting body pics for the first time. I was afraid that people would judge me, or think "oh she's still so fat, why does she even bother" and other self-destructive thoughts. But I finally did it, and I was amazed at how much support I received.

I still had that wave of insecurity and sheer terror when I first posted BIKINI pics. I was afraid that people wouldn't believe that I work out religiously. People would stop believing me. People would make fun of me. Well of course, NONE of that happened. Instead, those who saw them had nothing but good things to say, and they were supportive and honest. And best of all, the pictures served as a HUGE motivation. I told them I would post new pics in a month, and darn it when I was at the gym, ready to give up, I'd think of how my tummy looked in that bikini pic and I'd push myself to do ANOTHER mile, or 100 more crunches.

So let your pictures become a starting point, and a source of motivation. We will support you, I promise!!!

buffy, if you want some inspiration, my pics are on page 38 of this thread...

**For you personally, what is the biggest benefit of being in ketosis/lipolysis?

the biggest benefit for me is the freedom from the food cravings and obsessions. i feel i am able to get more accomplished b/c i am not constantly thinking of food. i also have increased energy and am in a better mood.

**How do you feel in glucosis, and how do you feel in ketosis/lipolysis?

being in glucosis makes me feel lethargic, achy, fatigued, and headachy. it makes me feel generally lazy and fat...unhealthy. when i am in glucosis, my body actually feels heavier...and this affects the way i carry my self and how i feel about my self in general.

**What studies have you heard of that prove hyperinsulinism is damaging to the body?

i have not heard of any. i'm sure i could find some though.

                                Second Buffy,

I think images of ourself when we don't like what we see can be hard to share. I'm one of 2 guys or 3 guys that are on this board consistantly (that I know of) and I also was scared of posting those images I thought what will all these ladies think of me. I'm no Brad Pitt and we are so acustom to magazines and Media, telling us that we need to be thin. So before I get on a discussion on that, I just want to share my experience on this board. It's been more then Stellar! Instead of critizism and people laughing I was embraced with so much support and love, as a matter a fact it works as motivation. I owe it to myself and to this board to suceed. If is family of Atkin dieters weren't so amazing I might quit already. So take your time and trust me all will be well.
