    Hey everyone!

Wow, never heard that potassium story before, how depressing. Deprivation diets will do that I guess. It reminded me of people who are very over weight but also nutritionally malnourished in terms of vitamins.

    Anyhoo:
    Water: 2 litres already
Food: 2197 calories and feeling much better for it. Fat 64% carbs 8% protein 25%
    Vitaminsone
Exercise: Done 55 mins biking and some abs. Might do some more biking later.
Scale: Not too tempted today - amazing!

Will be away for the weekend but will update once I'm back.

Hey Baarb! The story wasn't based on the potassium thing at all, so I don't mean tomake it sound like that Sorry if I did.
It was a major court battle, nationally televised, between the parents and husband of the girl that went on for years while she was in a vegetative state, wether or not she had a chance for recovery, and in the end the husband won and had the feeding tube removed and she died 3 days later I think. It was such a sad and horrifying story imagining being that poor girl, and i just remember at the time it was going on, there was an article where it was implied that because of her dieting, she had a severe potassium defficiency that caused her to stroke and become that way. It is completely unkown still if that is what caused it, because she was pretty healthy before it happened. It just stuck with me and now I get paranoid about it
It is so depressing I know, sorry to depress everyone!! SO SORRY!

Anyhoo, Have a great weekend !!!

It is Terry Schiavo that you're talking about. Was is conclusively proven that potassium is what caused her stroke? I didn't think it was and that it was suspected that her husband abused her. I have the book that was written by her family about her life and it is a very tragic story.

          Yes heather it is~ Thanks

And no I don't think they will ever know what caused her condition, I just remember that it was a suspected possibility and made me nervous about skimping on nutients is all.

          • Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

Well everyone to put the potassium question at ease for all of you, why not stop by the vita nutrient forum and get the info you need to suppliment any nutrients you may be missing? Also, you might want to consider moving up the rungs of OWL. I am currently on the starchy veggies rung and have potatoes once a week, and sometimes I will even have yams once a week, so two root veggies a week and I am still losing weight! (or at least I know I am losing inches since I can't step on the stupid scale, who's idea was that anyways? LOL)

Moving up the rungs of OWL is what Dr.A intended for his patients. 20 carbs is not a magic number. He picked that number because he knew it was low enough for mose people to lose weight on. Infact most people unless they are severely metabolic resistant can eat around 45 grams of carbs a day and still lose weight. And if you are a regular exerciser (4-5 days a week for about 45 minutes) you may be able to eat as high as 90-100 grams of net carbs a day and still lose weight although at that point it may be only .5-1 lb per week. But really is that a bad thing unless you have VERY far to go? 1 lb per week means 52 lbs a year. And you are really laying down the foundations of life long eating and exercise habits.

Oh well, just food for thought.

Today has been ok, but I haven't done spectacular, though.

Exercise - check, worked out for 2 hours (weights and cardio)
Vitamins - check, working on evening dose now
Water - may not make my goal tonight. I think I'm a quart low - haha
Food - calories are right where I need them to be, but my fat percentage is only 56. I feel like I've been eating fatty stuff all day though. Even added extra cream to my coffee.

                  • Re: Atkins Attack, May 1st - June 15th.

WTG Kim and Cynthia! i am impresses ladies, and the regular check ins will help keep you on the right track!

I didn't mean to try to shut you up Kim, it is important to ask the questions you are thinking about, because many others are probably thinking it to and are too shy to ask. I do have to say thought that moving on to OWL will also make sure you are eating enough potassium. I have gone up to level 8 starchy veggies rung and it is great. I eat about 35-45 carbs a day and still pee purple! I lose weight at a good pace of about 15 lbs average per month so far, and i eat potatoes and yams, the odd small piece of banana, and I have so many things that would seen so contradictory of Atkins. If people only knew... I even eat apples with SF peanut butter on a very regular basis. MMMMMMMMM! Listen, many people think that adding carbs and calories is a bad thing with atkins, but the fact of the matter is that Dr.A himself said that there is no magic in the number 20 for carb consumption. He picked that number because it would be low enough for most people to enter deep ketosis and lose a lot of weight durring induction that would keep them motivated to continue. The whole point of the carbohydrate ladder is to get people to eat a diet that they can sustain for the REST OF THEIR LIVES! It would be a sad life for me if I could never have apples. Every year my hubby, kids and I go apple picking. We eat an apple while we do this. We find the prettiest apple we can find and sit under the trees and eat. This would kind of bum me out to never do it again. I love apples, so why do with out? Why not make sure that I am balancing my carbs so i can enjoy the apple without any guilt or conflict. I mean come on... it is an apple for crying out loud, am I right?

The only things that could possibly make Atkins a restrictive diet would be that you are restricted from eating refined white flours and sugar, trans fat and hydrogenated fats, white pasta, and processed rice. I would much rater have whole grain breads, wild or brown rice, whole oats, low carb pastas, and muffins or baked goods made from soy flour or ground nuts. These things sound way more delicious to me. Gourmet eating!

Well, Atkins Attack is all about giving yourself a good 6 weeks to get focused on Atkins and all of it's aspects. That means even moving up the rungs of the carbohydrate ladder if you are ready. I did this while I did my march madness personal challenge. I started eating foods on the rungs of OWL while I did that challenge! unbelieveable eh? Eating foods that are higher in carbs and still losing weight?

I have said it before and will say it again... trust the science of Atkins, it works.

                    Happy low carbing everyone!

BTW did everyone follow up on the personal challenge I set for sending encouraging pm's to those in the challenge?

Well, are you still on induction? If you are then try adding about 1 cup of extra veggies a day for the next week and see if you have any cravings resurface. You will know if you are still losing weight by the ketostixs. Pee on em! If they turn any colour at all you know you are burning. I test in the evening before bed a few hours after I have last eaten. This way it goves an accurate reading of my fat burning not the fat I have just eaten.

Then the next week add some seeds and nuts to the menu. Watch for cravings. And allergy symptoms. Then you are at the berries rung baby and you can start having strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, honeydew and canteloupe melons and all of the options open way up at this point! I found that I eat at this rung on most days. I can have all of the other foods, but often am happy with the options I have on this rung.

Try it! I swear you will feel so free with the options! Way cool.

Very cool that all of yah's have been checking in to talk about how you are doing, how the scale torments you and how you are focusing on your foods with attention being paid to your calories and carb intake. Water and suppliments and in general I'd like to know how you feel since starting? Do you find you are more tired, energetic, happy about your body as you build strength, or finding it difficult to get everything in in a day?

Just some wondering on my part!!! Well, got a very full schedule today so I'll check back later. Have a great Saturday everyone!!
