Re: Calling all new C25K participants!!!

Something happened to my knee !

Thursday morning I bent down to get something out of the bottom of the fridge and I got this terrible pain on the inside of my right knee. I thought that was all ~ a one-time sharp pain. However, shortly after that I went to get up from a seated position and I got the pain again. At work I also would get it if, out of habit, I pushed myself backwards in my chair (with wheels) using my right foot or tried to get up from my chair with weight on my right leg.

After looking at some anatomy charts of the knee it seems that the pain is in the medial collateral ligament (MCL), but I'm no doctor .

On Thursday I avoided taking the stairs and putting weight on my right leg if it was in a bent position. However, I took a 15-minute walk in the morning and a 30-minute walk at lunch at pretty much my usual pace. I felt a couple twinges of pain during my 30-minute walk. But all in all, my knee didn't seem to be bothered as long as I kept it on a straight plane and wasn't bending it.

Then sometime after my 30-minute walk at lunch my knee seemed to be really tight and sore and I was limping even when I was walking around the office. To relieve some of the tightness I went to do a calf stretch against the wall and again I got a sharp jolt of pain.

When I got home I iced it a few times thoughout the night and when I woke up Friday it seemed better. To test it I did one squat - very slowly and controlled - and there wasn't an ounce of pain. I thought it was better. I had Friday off and was doing chores around the house. Again, my knee started bothering me - especially if I turned on it. By the end of the night the pain was also in the bend of my knee (back of my leg) and I was limping again.

Needless to say I might be out of commission for awhile . So, I'm sidelined. It's a little disappointing, but I know it's only temporary. If it doesn't get better in a week then I'll probably go to the doctor. There are two women that I clog with who are Physical Therapists. I may call one of them this weekend or talk to them at practice on Monday.

Keep up the great work ladies!

oh, no, Kristine!!! I'm glad you're taking care of you. Lucky you to know 2 PT's! Take care!

I didn't get to do my day 3 of week 2 on Friday because I was busy getting the 5 of us ready and out the door to go camping for couple of days. I think that alone was exercise! But I did get it done on Saturday! HA! And somebody probably was thinking I petered out already! lol. We just got home a few hours ago from a lake where there are dirt roads, rolling hills on those dirt roads, and not many folks around...mainly, because you can only get to where we were by 4-wheel drive I missed having my treadmill to watch my times, but my trusty watch helped a great deal. I got in to listening to the music on my MP3 and just going. I have to admit, I was huffing and puffing a lot more on those rolling hills than I would be on my flat treadmill. I we were up around 5,000, so that might have something to do with it.

So, I'll be working on Week 3 starting tomorrow....yikes....I think! I got a lot of walking down this weekend between hiking and fishing...well, they all fished, I hiked around looking for wild flowers

        Rest tonight and laundry tomorrow!

Good luck, Irish, on your first day of training! Glad you're with us!

Clogger, hope you're feeling better! Did you go to the doctor or PT? Sounds really painful!!

Lisa, I know about that last 3 min jog...I thought I would *die*!!! A second week of #3 might be in order. Yikes!

I finally got some *good* new running shoes, but for the life of me, I can't remember the brand name! LOL It starts with an "M" and they are mostly known for their baseball shoes. At least my SIL recognized them. We have a new running shoe store in town and they watched me walk, sized both feet, took a look at my old shoes for wear patterns, and then the shoe fitting. Whew! We were there for a good 45 minutes or so. I have 30 days to test these babies out & if I don't like them, I can bring them back and get something else. So far, so good!

Woohoo..bio's got a new pair of shoes! I'm slightly jealous because you went and got fitted for shoes the right way. Good for you! If you think of the name of the shoes, will you share? I may put those on my birthday list

Re: Calling all new C25K participants!!!

Well I started yesterday! Woo hoo! It really wasn't too bad. I don't know if my speeds are too slow or not but they seemed to work out just right for me. I was sweating quite a bit by the end but I wasn't about to keel-over and die from lack of oxygen. So my days will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday roughly. It may change here and there but as long as I get my three days in is what matters right?

                    C25k Week 1 Day 1:
Brisk 5 minute walk warmup at 2.0 speed
                    Run 90 seconds @ 4.0 speed
                    Walk 60 seconds @ 2.8 speed
20:00 with an additional 3 minutes of cool down.

                    Got about 1.1 miles in.

My treadmill is kinda old and cheap. I don't trust any of the calorie, fat, etc. readings on it so I didn't bother recording any of that. Going to do day 2 on Wednesday!

                      Great job, Irishmom!

I think your speed is great. I was the same with oxygen...just remember to breathe in and out. lol. I'm also doing mine on the same days you are. Maybe spreading out the pain and suffereing, I mean exercise, helps give the muscles time to recover.

Thanks Lisa! I was a little worried that my speed wasn't "good enough" after reading some other participants stats..haha. I guess the best way to gauge the speeds is whether or not I can remain on the treadmill without collapsing, haha

Thanks everyone for your care and concern about my knee.

On Monday I went to Urgent Care and the doctor thought it was my medial meniscus and referred me to Sports Medicine. I have an appt with a doc there tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find out...

Lisa ~ Way to run on your trip! I laughed reading this "are you kidding me???? 3 minutes left....2:30 left...1:30 left...ugh...it's never going to end!!!" - I completely understand! You can do it!

BioGeek ~ Are your shoes Mizuno? Keep up the good work!

Irish ~ Yeah! You did it! Congratulations on starting C25K. Don't worry about speed. From what I've read us beginners should focus on just being able to run for the given time intervals.

I hope to be joining back with you all soon...

Today's jog/run wasn't as bad as it was on Monday....it still had it's moments, but not so bad. I think because I was celebrating on the treadmill this time and I stretched pretty good before I even started. I did have to do a quick walk at the last 3 min jog because I could feel my hamstrings starting to tighten up a bit. That seemed to help and I started back up again with no problems.

Hey Irish! Congrats on getting that first workout in!!! Don't even worry about your speed unless you're going too fast. The idea is to be able to complete the training and then build speed up later.

clogger, that's the name of my shoes! Mizuno!! I looked at the name this morning when I worked out and swore that I would remember...I didn't, but I'm glad you came through! I'm glad you're seeing a specialist tomorrow...hopefully you'll receive good news. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Lisa, sounds like you had a better day 2 of week 3 than I did! That 3 minute jog is a killer! I have Turbo Jam at home...that Charlene is a killer, too! She's pretty dance-y, and with my two left feet, I feel like I'm working EXTRA hard. Beach Body products are great! I think you'll enjoy the new workout.

I prefer the M-W-F training schedule as well. I like giving my body a day off from jogging, but I still workout on other days.

Have any of you thought about signing up for any 5Ks in your area? I'm dreaming of the "Turkey Trot" or whatever they're called that's on the morning of Thanksgiving. That should give me plenty of time to build up my confidence in my jogging while having a good workout prior to the feast.

My main goal at the end of the C25k is to run in a 5k. Not sure when I'll finish the program though, maybe at the end of summer.

I also have Turbo Jam. It's a good workout. I use Turbo Jam as my "rainy day" workout. Also know as the workout I do when I'm on a C25k off day and I can't go outside and walk cause it's raining...haha.

                                C25k Week 1 Day 2:
Brisk 5 minute walk warmup at 2.0 speed

                                Walk 60 seconds @ 2.8 speed
20:00 with an additional 3 minutes of cool down.

The second day was a little harder. My breathing is something I need to work on. I was getting short of breathe right as I was hitting the 30 second mark of my 60 second jog. I think it's cause I kept breathing in deeply not short quick breathes. How do you all breathe?

It was interesting because I did the same exact thing as Monday but for some reason I didn't quite hit 1 mile during my actual workout I hit about .97 miles. I hit the 1 mile mark during my cool down....hmmmm....
